ISO 22000 certification in Indonesia at a glance
In Indonesia, ISO 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Food manufacturers in Indonesia work under two layers of assurance that buyers ask about. The first is legal: Undang-Undang Nomor 33 Tahun 2014 requires products that enter, circulate and are traded in Indonesia to be halal-certified, with halal and non-halal processes kept apart. The second is commercial: retailers, exporters and brand owners want evidence that hazards are identified and controlled from raw material to dispatch, and ISO 22000 is the international standard that provides it. The two fit together well, because both depend on supplier approval, traceability, controlled changes and trained people on the line. ISO 22000 certification is granted by a certification body, ideally one accredited by Komite Akreditasi Nasional (KAN) or another body within the international recognition arrangements, after it audits the prerequisite programmes, hazard analysis and control measures in operation. Sterling's Jakarta office implements the system with producers and ingredient suppliers and aligns it with halal preparation. Questions specific to Indonesia are answered below.
Who needs ISO 22000 in Indonesia, and what happens without it
In Indonesia the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Food and beverage manufacturers supplying retailers and exportersBuyers ask for a certified food safety management system.
- Producers preparing for halal certificationHalal and food safety systems share traceability, supplier control and process separation.
- Ingredient and packaging suppliersFood manufacturers extend food safety requirements to their suppliers.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22000 requires a company to prove six things about keeping food safe from supplier to customer.
In Indonesia these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22000 explained →

How long does ISO 22000 certification take in Indonesia?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Indonesia these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of product lines and sites
- Prerequisite programme maturity (hygiene, pest control, maintenance)
- Hazard analysis and validation records available
- Certification body scheduling around Ramadan, Idul Fitri and cuti bersama
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 22000 certification cost in Indonesia?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Indonesia these factors move both.
- Number of sites and production lines
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Infrastructure upgrades identified in the gap assessment
- Combining halal, HACCP and ISO 22000 documentation
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Indonesia
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Indonesia are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 22000 in Indonesia (1)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Undang-undang (UU) Nomor 33 Tahun 2014 tentang Jaminan Produk Halal (as amended) | Related Products entering, circulating and traded in Indonesia must be halal-certified, with halal and non-halal processes kept separate; this standard is not cited. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Indonesia
Use a certification body accredited for this standard by Komite Akreditasi Nasional (KAN) or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation for Indonesia has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 22000 hub →
Audit language
Audits are conducted in Bahasa Indonesia or English; agree the audit and document language with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.
ISO 22000 in Indonesia: questions clients ask
Is ISO 22000 mandatory for Indonesian food companies?
No legal mandate was verified. Demand is buyer-driven, while halal certification is a separate legal obligation for products sold in Indonesia. Ask your customers whether they require ISO 22000, and treat halal as a distinct task with its own regulator.
Can ISO 22000 and halal requirements share one system?
Yes, they can share much of one system. Halal rules call for process separation and reporting of composition changes, and ISO 22000 already needs traceability and supplier control. Build those common controls once, then add the halal-specific requirements on top.
Should we choose ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000?
FSSC 22000 adds scheme requirements on top of ISO 22000, so it asks more of you. The customer's requirement should decide. If your buyers accept ISO 22000, there is no need to take on the extra scheme rules unprompted. Compare the two against your buyers' purchasing terms, since the customer's wording settles the question.
