ISO standards comparison: which standard, framework or report fits your need
Side-by-side guides for the choices clients raise most often: ISO/IEC 27001 or SOC 2, ISO 9001 or a sector standard, a framework or a certificate. Each guide compares scope, who assesses, what you receive at the end and how two systems can run together.
How to use these guides
Start from the question your customer or regulator is asking
Most comparison questions come from outside the organisation: a customer's security questionnaire, a tender requirement, a regulator's expectation or a buyer's supplier approval. Each guide sets the two or more options side by side on what they cover, who carries out the assessment, whether the outcome is a certificate, an accreditation or a report, and what drives the effort.
Many organisations end up needing more than one. Where standards share a structure, the guides show how to run them as one integrated management system with shared policies, risk assessment, internal audit and management review, so the second standard adds less work than the first. Sterling does not certify; an accredited body audits and decides.

FAQs
Questions about choosing between standards
Short answers; each guide goes into the detail for its own comparison.
Can one management system cover two or more ISO standards?
Yes. Standards built on the common ISO management system structure share clauses such as context, leadership, planning, internal audit and management review. An integrated system keeps one set of these and adds the requirements specific to each standard, and certification audits can often be combined.
What is the difference between a certificate and a report such as SOC 2?
An ISO certificate is issued by an accredited certification body after it audits your management system against the standard. A SOC 2 report is an attestation issued by a licensed CPA firm describing your controls and, for Type 2, how they operated over a period. Customers read them differently, and the guides explain when each is expected.
How do I decide which standard to start with?
Start with what your customers, regulators or tenders ask for now, then the standard that gives the widest base for the next one. A free discovery call with a Sterling consultant can map your requirements to a sequence and a realistic timeline.
