Healthcare providers · ISO and GRC consulting

ISO certification for healthcare providers built around the way care is actually delivered.

Hospitals, clinics, laboratories and telehealth services are asked to prove quality of care, protect patient information and keep staff safe. Sterling's expert and experienced consultants build one practical management system with your clinical, operational and IT teams, prepare the evidence and stay with you through the audit and after it. We ensure successful certification for our clients.

  • One all-inclusive proposal for a defined scope: consulting, Effivity software, Sterling Academy access and internal auditor training, as applicable to your standard, in one proposal
  • Quality, laboratory, patient information and staff safety requirements combined in one system, so wards and departments are not audited on four separate sets of paperwork
  • The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements. Sterling does not certify; an accredited body audits and decides
  • Care you can evidenceAdmission, treatment, discharge and referral run to agreed processes, with records a surveyor can follow.
  • Patient data protectedClinical systems, telehealth platforms and suppliers covered by assessed risks and working controls.
  • Results clinicians trustLaboratory examinations and point-of-care testing brought to the standard your accreditation body assesses.
  • Safer wards for staffHazards from sharps to patient handling identified, controlled and reviewed with the people who face them.

What healthcare providers are asked for

The standards hospitals, clinics and telehealth services are asked for, and what each one proves.

Most providers start with ISO 9001 or ISO 7101 for the quality of care and ISO/IEC 27001 for patient information, then add the laboratory, safety and environmental standards their scope needs. Where a law or health authority sets the rules, as HIPAA does for US patient data and ADHICS does in Abu Dhabi, we build that programme into the same system.

Why now

Why healthcare providers are being asked for evidence now.

The questions arrive from different directions: a health authority, a payer, a hospital group, a partner laboratory or a patient who has read about a data breach. Each one wants proof, not a policy on a shelf.

  • Health authorities set the rulesIn Abu Dhabi, the Department of Health establishes and enforces ADHICS for every healthcare entity it regulates. In the United States, the HHS Office for Civil Rights enforces HIPAA through complaints, compliance reviews and settlements.
  • Cyber incidents reach the wardRecent HIPAA resolution agreements cite ransomware, phishing, missing risk analysis, unencrypted devices and gaps in business associate agreements. A tested security system shortens the downtime when an attack lands.
  • Payers and corporate clients askInsurers, employers contracting health services and partner facilities increasingly ask for documented quality and data protection before they refer patients or sign a contract.
  • Group and network standardsHospital groups and clinic networks want every site to work the same way, report the same indicators and pass the same audit, which one certified system makes possible.
  • Accreditation ambitionsProviders aiming for Joint Commission International accreditation or ISO 15189 for their laboratory need governance, records and internal audit already working before the surveyors arrive.
  • Telehealth and new servicesRemote consultations, patient apps and outsourced reporting move patient information outside the hospital walls, so scope, suppliers and access controls have to be defined again.

Scope and evidence

What auditors look for in a hospital, clinic or telehealth service.

Six areas carry most of the audit time in healthcare. The evidence is usually already being produced on the wards and in the laboratory; the work is making it consistent, complete and easy to retrieve.

Requirement areaWhat it looks like in a hospital or clinicEvidence auditors ask for
Care processes and patient experienceAdmission, assessment, treatment, discharge and referral pathways; complaints and patient feedback handled and acted onProcess maps, clinical pathways in use, complaint log with responses, patient feedback analysis and actions
Laboratory examinationsSample collection from the wards, method verification, quality control, reporting and point-of-care testing managed by the laboratoryScope of examinations, verification records, internal quality control and external quality assessment results, competence records
Patient information securityElectronic health records, imaging, telehealth platforms and medical devices holding patient data; access by clinicians and support staffRisk assessment, Statement of Applicability or security risk analysis, access reviews, backup and restore tests, incident records
Suppliers and outsourced servicesReference laboratories, IT and cloud providers, billing, cleaning, catering and biomedical engineering contractorsApproved supplier list, contracts and business associate agreements where HIPAA applies, supplier evaluations and monitoring
Staff health and safetySharps, patient handling, exposure to infection and hazardous substances, violence and aggression, shift workHazard register, incident and near-miss investigations, worker consultation records, training and emergency drills
Environment and clinical wasteSegregation and disposal of clinical and hazardous waste, energy and water use, chemicals and permitsAspects register, compliance obligations and their evaluation, waste transfer records, monitoring data

ISO 15189 is assessed by an accreditation body, not certified; HIPAA has no certification at all and is demonstrated to the regulator and your partners. We tell you at the start which route applies to each part of your scope.

FAQs

Questions healthcare providers ask before they engage us.

The specific answers for your organisation come from the discovery call. These are the general ones.

Which ISO certification should a hospital or clinic start with?

Most providers start with ISO 9001 or ISO 7101 for the quality of care, and ISO/IEC 27001 if patient information is the pressing risk. ISO 9001 is recognised in every sector; ISO 7101, published in 2023, is the first management system standard written for quality in healthcare organisations. The discovery call looks at who is asking for evidence and why, then recommends the order.

What is the difference between ISO 9001 and ISO 7101 for healthcare?

ISO 9001 is the general quality management standard used across all sectors, so partners and tenders recognise it widely. ISO 7101 applies the same management system structure to healthcare specifically, with emphasis on people-centred care, patient and workforce safety and a culture of quality led from the top. Both use the same ISO management system clause structure, so one system can meet both if your scope needs it.

Does our hospital laboratory need ISO 15189 or ISO 9001?

A medical laboratory that wants its results formally recognised needs ISO 15189 accreditation, granted by an accreditation body for a defined scope of examinations. ISO 9001 certifies the management system but says nothing about technical competence. The current edition, ISO 15189:2022, also covers point-of-care testing in its Annex A, so ward-based testing the laboratory is responsible for comes into scope.

Is there a HIPAA certification for healthcare providers?

No. HHS does not recognise private HIPAA certifications, and compliance is shown to the Office for Civil Rights and to your partners through a documented programme: a security risk analysis, safeguards, policies, training, business associate agreements and breach procedures. ISO/IEC 27001 can evidence much of the security side, and we build both in one system for providers serving US patients.

We operate a hospital in Abu Dhabi. How does ADHICS relate to ISO/IEC 27001?

ADHICS is the healthcare information and cyber security standard the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi applies to the entities it regulates, and certification bodies accredited by EIAC can audit against it. ISO/IEC 27001 supports it but does not replace it. We build the ADHICS governance and controls for your category and, where useful, the ISO/IEC 27001 system alongside, sharing one risk assessment.

Can Sterling help us prepare for JCI accreditation?

Joint Commission International runs its own hospital accreditation, against its hospital standards now in their eighth edition, and JCI alone decides. We do not replace JCI's own guidance. What we build, a working quality system with document control, incident handling, internal audit, indicators and management review, gives your teams the governance and records any accreditation survey expects to find in daily use.

Will certification work disrupt patient care?

It should not. Sessions are planned around ward rounds, clinics and shift patterns, and your consultant works with department heads in short, scheduled blocks. Most of the evidence already exists in clinical and administrative records; Effivity, included with the engagement at no additional cost, collects it as people work, so staff are not pulled away from patients to fill in binders.
