The engagement, step by step
How training runs, from the needs analysis to the audit evidence.
Training in a Sterling engagement runs on Sterling OS™ alongside the implementation, planned by your consultant and delivered through Sterling Academy. Where training is added to a system that already runs, the same steps apply on a shorter calendar.
- 01
Training needs by role
At the scope and gap analysisWhat happens
We look at the roles in scope and at what the standard requires each of them to know or do. Everyone needs awareness; the people who own processes need to understand the requirements they run; the audit team needs to audit. Existing training records are reviewed, so nobody repeats what they have already covered.
You receive
- Training needs by role, for the standard and scope agreed
- Review of existing training records against those needs
- Training plan with target dates tied to the audit window
Your side
Your organisation chart, the names of your process owners and proposed internal auditors, and any training records you hold.
- 02
Learner access and roll-out
Before the build beginsWhat happens
Learner lists are agreed by department and Sterling Academy access is opened for each person. Managers are briefed on what their people will learn and how progress is tracked, so completion is managed like any other part of the plan.
You receive
- Sterling Academy access for each learner on the agreed lists
- Progress by department, visible to your project owner
- A briefing for managers on what each course expects of their people
Your side
Learner lists by department, and managers who give their people the time to complete the courses.
- 03
Awareness and practitioner learning
During the buildWhat happens
Awareness e-learning runs while the system is being built, so people meet the policy and processes as they are introduced. Process owners go further into the requirements of the processes they run, and your consultant links what they learn to the procedures being written with them.
You receive
- Awareness e-learning with practice checkpoints and a final exam
- Practitioner learning for the people who run the system
- A numbered Certificate of Completion for each learner, verifiable online
Your side
Learners completing their courses on the dates in the plan, and managers following up where progress stalls.
- 04
Internal auditor training
Before the internal auditWhat happens
The people who will audit your system are trained to plan an audit against the standard, collect evidence and report findings that lead to corrective action. They then take part in the internal audit of your own system, conducted or facilitated with your consultant, so the training is put to work straight away on the processes they know.
You receive
- Internal auditor training for your audit team
- A Certificate of Completion for each auditor, verifiable online
- Your trained auditors on the internal audit, conducted or facilitated as agreed
Your side
Internal auditors chosen so that nobody audits their own work, released for the training and for the audit.
- 05
Training evidence for the audit
Before Stage 1What happens
Certification auditors ask who has been trained, in what, and how the organisation knows the training worked. Your consultant checks completion against the training plan, closes any gaps and prepares the people most likely to be interviewed, so the answers come from the people and the records agree with them.
You receive
- Completion checked against the training plan, by department
- Certificates and training records ready for the auditor
- Interview preparation for process owners and managers
Your side
Anyone still outstanding completing their courses, and your people answering the auditor about their own work.
Who does what
Choose how much of the work Sterling carries.
Two delivery models, one method. Under Design™ your team implements with Sterling's structure, templates and coaching; under Drive™ Sterling consultants carry the work with your process owners. Sterling Academy training is part of both, and the one all-inclusive proposal covers it either way.

Effivity · included with the engagement
Your system runs in software from the first workshop.
Effivity is the ISO and GRC automation platform built by the Sterling group and used in 50+ countries. Your consultant configures it within the agreed scope, so evidence accumulates as people do their work and the certification auditor reviews a live system rather than a binder. Sterling consulting clients get their subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost.
ISO & GRC softwareSterling Academy · included with the engagement
Your people learn the standard, not just the forms.
E-learning with practice checkpoints, a final exam and a numbered Certificate of Completion for each learner, verifiable online, with progress by department for the certification audit. Sterling consulting clients get preferential course access and special pricing, including complimentary awareness training for their people as part of the engagement.
Contact us about Academy accessHow we price
One all-inclusive proposal. Every component visible. No surprises, ever.
What training costs depends on the standard, how many people need each level of learning and whether it sits inside a consulting engagement, which is why there is no useful universal price. Sterling consulting clients get preferential Sterling Academy course access and special pricing, including complimentary awareness training for their people as part of the engagement. What is fixed is how the proposal works.
- One all-inclusive proposal for Sterling's work, software and learning. Consulting, Effivity and Sterling Academy access in one figure; the fee does not move when the work takes longer than we planned.
- Certification-body fees identified separately. The body's audit days, travel and surveillance arrangements are shown as their own line, so the full programme cost is comparable across proposals.
- Payment milestones tied to deliverables, not to the calendar: the gap analysis report, the documented system, the internal audit, the certificate.
- Deliverables, responsibilities, assumptions and exclusions in writing, and nothing to sign to receive the proposal.
To prepare your proposal we need
- The standard, or standards, your system is built on
- The departments and sites in scope
- Approximate numbers for awareness, practitioner and internal auditor training
- Whether a consulting engagement is planned or already running
- Your audit date or deadline, if there is one
That is enough for a scoped, all-inclusive proposal from a Sterling consultant in your region. There is no need to prepare a manual first.

Don’t be fooled by certification scams
Sterling against the alternatives.
There are four common ways to train people for a management system. Three of them leave you with certificates and no competence, competence nobody can prove, or neither. This is what each route actually gives you.

FAQs
Questions clients ask before they engage us.
Answers for your own people and standard come from the discovery call; these cover what most organisations ask first.
Is a Sterling Academy certificate the same as ISO certification?
No. A Sterling Academy certificate is a training certificate: it records that one person completed a course and passed its final exam, and it can be verified online. ISO certification belongs to an organisation and is issued by an independent, accredited certification body after it audits the management system. Sterling does not certify; training prepares your people to run the system that the certification body audits.
Who in our organisation needs ISO training?
Everyone within the scope of the management system needs awareness training, and some roles need more. The people who own and run processes need to understand the requirements behind them, and the people who will carry out internal audits need internal auditor training. Your consultant sets this out role by role at the start, so nobody sits through courses that do not apply.
Why train everyone, and not just the quality team?
Because certification auditors talk to people across the organisation, not only to the system owner. They ask what the policy means for someone's job, how their work contributes and what happens when a procedure is not followed. Awareness e-learning gives every person the same grounding, and progress by department shows the auditor that it happened.
Is awareness training enough for our process owners?
Usually not. Awareness explains what the system is and why it matters; process owners also need to understand the requirements that apply to the processes they run and the records that prove them. Practitioner learning covers that, and your consultant connects it to the procedures being written with the same people, so what they learn and what they operate are the same thing.
How do we show the certification auditor that our people are trained?
With records that match the training plan. Each learner has a numbered Certificate of Completion, verifiable online, and Sterling Academy shows progress by department, so you can show who has completed which training against what the plan required. Before Stage 1 your consultant checks completion against the plan and closes the gaps, and the people most likely to be interviewed are prepared to explain their part.
Why do we need internal auditors of our own?
Because the ISO management system standards require the organisation to audit its own system at planned intervals, with auditors who are objective about what they audit. A trained internal audit team finds weaknesses before the certification body does and keeps testing the system between surveillance audits. Internal auditor training prepares them, and they then audit your own system with your consultant, conducted or facilitated as agreed.
What happens when new people join or the standard is revised?
Both are planned for, not left to chance. Under Sustain™ refresher and new-hire training is scheduled into the year alongside the internal audits and the management review. Under Revise™, when you transition to a revised edition, add a standard or extend the scope, your people are trained on what has changed before the certification body audits it.
Does a Sterling Academy certificate make someone a certified auditor?
No. It shows that the person completed the course and passed its final exam, and it can be verified online. Together with their experience, it supports your organisation's own judgement that the person is competent to audit your system as an internal auditor. It is not a certification-body auditor qualification, and Sterling does not present it as one.
How do we get Sterling Academy access?
Through your Sterling consultant. Sterling consulting clients get preferential course access and special pricing, including complimentary awareness training for their people as part of the engagement. Whether you are considering an engagement or already have one, contact us about Academy access and a Sterling consultant will set out the training that fits your standard and your people.
