Education · ISO and GRC consulting
ISO certification for education that learners, parents and sponsors can rely on.
Schools, universities, training providers and corporate academies are asked to prove what they promise: programmes that deliver their stated outcomes, competent educators, safe campuses and protected learner data. Sterling's expert and experienced consultants build the management system behind that proof with your leadership and educators, in step with your academic calendar. We ensure successful certification for our clients.

What Education is asked for
The standards schools, universities and training providers are asked for.
Most education clients start with ISO 21001, the management system standard written for organisations that use a curriculum to develop competence, whatever their size or method of delivery. The others follow the questions your learners, sponsors, partners and regulators ask: how learner data is protected, how campuses are kept safe, how the environment is managed and, for examination and certification bodies, why a certificate of competence can be trusted. The ISO standards share one structure, so they run as one system rather than several.
Why now
Why education providers are asked for evidence now.
The pressure rarely comes from one direction. These are the six places it typically comes from, and what each one wants to see.
- Learners, parents and sponsorsFamilies, employers and sponsors paying for education want evidence that programmes deliver what the prospectus says. A certified system answers with records of design, assessment and feedback rather than assurances.
- Tenders and training contractsPublic and corporate buyers of education and training services may ask about quality and information security arrangements in their questionnaires. A certificate from an accredited body gives a direct answer.
- Education and data protection regulatorsEducation authorities review quality in their own way, and ISO 21001 does not replace that review. Data protection law is direct: under the GDPR a notifiable breach reaches the supervisory authority within 72 hours where feasible, and access requests are answered within one month.
- Insurers, landlords and partnersWhen insurers, landlords or partner institutions ask how laboratory, workshop, campus and cyber risks are controlled, ISO 45001 and ISO/IEC 27001 give documented, independently audited answers.
- Groups, partnerships and franchisesSchool groups, university partnerships and franchised training centres need every site to deliver the same standard. One management system, with internal audits across sites, shows where they do and where they do not.
- Incidents, complaints and appealsA data breach, a safety incident on campus or a run of assessment appeals tests the institution's response. A working system has the investigation, the corrective action and the evidence of the fix ready.
Scope and evidence
What auditors look for in a school, university or training provider.
The requirement areas come from ISO 21001 and the related standards named. The middle column is what each looks like in an education setting; the right-hand column is the evidence an auditor asks to see.
| Requirement area | What it looks like in Education | Evidence auditors ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Programme design and learning outcomes (ISO 21001) | Programme specifications with defined learning outcomes and assessment methods, reviewed and validated before a course runs, and controlled when the curriculum or calendar changes | Programme specifications, design review and validation records, approval minutes, change records |
| Admission, delivery and assessment (ISO 21001) | Admission requirements communicated before enrolment, teaching delivered as planned, consistent assessment, and action when a course or assessment does not run as designed | Published admission criteria, timetables, attendance and assessment records, moderation records, records of nonconforming outputs |
| Educator competence and learning environment (ISO 21001) | Educators qualified and competent for what they teach, the additional competence for special needs education where it applies, and facilities fit for learning | Qualification and competence records, training plans, facility and learning-environment checks |
| Feedback, complaints and appeals (ISO 21001) | Surveys of learners, parents, sponsors and staff read and acted on; complaints and appeals investigated to root cause | Survey results with the actions taken, a complaints and appeals log, corrective actions closed with evidence, management review decisions |
| Learner data (ISO 21001, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 27701, GDPR) | Admissions, grades and learner support records spread across the student system, the learning platform, spreadsheets and paper, with access limited and rights requests answered on time | Record of processing, access rules, information security risk assessment and Statement of Applicability, rights-request log with response dates, breach register |
| Campus safety and examinations (ISO 45001, ISO/IEC 17024) | Hazards in laboratories, workshops and sports facilities identified and controlled; for bodies that certify persons, fair examinations and a written boundary between training and examining | Hazard and risk register, incident investigations, emergency drill records; scheme documents, examination records, impartiality records |
Annex A of ISO 21001 adds normative requirements only where you provide early childhood education. An ISO 21001 certificate is not an accreditation of your degrees, diplomas or programmes; their recognition stays with the authorities and bodies responsible for it.
The engagement
What happens between the first call and the certificate.
For most education clients the primary standard is ISO 21001:2025, with other standards added to the same system. The six steps do not change; the evidence has to come from a real intake or term, so we plan them around your academic calendar.
- 01Define what the certificate needs to cover.Confirm activities, sites, headcount, customer expectations and the intended certification scope.
- 02Gap analysis: review the current system against the requirements. The gap analysis identifies what is missing, preserves effective practice and agrees actions, owners, dates and resources.
- 03Implement and collect meaningful evidence.Put controls into use, train the relevant people and keep the records that show how the system operates.
- 04Audit, review and address the findings.Internal audit and management review evaluate implementation; findings are raised by us first and closed with evidence.
- 05Complete the independent assessment. The certification body's Stage 1 readiness review, then the Stage 2 audit; respond to any findings and await its decision.
- 06Maintain the system after certification.Monitoring, internal audits, reviews and improvement continue, alongside the body's surveillance audits and three-yearly recertification.

FAQs
Questions Education clients ask before they engage us.
The specific answers for your organisation come from the discovery call. These are the general ones.
Which ISO standard should a school or university start with?
Most start with ISO 21001, because it is written for organisations that use a curriculum to develop competence and covers programme design, teaching, assessment, learner support and learner data. Institutions already certified to ISO 9001, or delivering services beyond education, may keep ISO 9001 alongside it. Information security, privacy, safety and environmental standards are added when learners, sponsors or partners ask for them, in the same management system.
Can one management system cover ISO 21001, ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO 45001 together?
Yes. The ISO management system standards share the harmonised structure, so context, leadership, planning, support, internal audit, management review and improvement are built once and the standard-specific controls sit on top. A certification body can audit them together or separately. Standards can be added in stages rather than all at once, and the integrated system spares educators a second set of documents to maintain.
Does ISO 21001 replace inspection or review by an education authority?
No. An education authority's review, or the recognition of a qualification, follows its own rules, and an ISO 21001 certificate does not stand in for it. What a certified system does give you is organised, current evidence of how programmes are designed, delivered and assessed, and of how learner feedback leads to change, which you can draw on when preparing for any external review.
How does the academic calendar affect the timeline?
It shapes it. ISO 21001 typically takes four to eight months, because the system has to run through a real admission, delivery and assessment cycle, or a substantial part of one, before the certification body's Stage 2 audit. We schedule the gap analysis, training and internal audit around term dates, and time Stage 2 when teaching, assessment and learner support can be observed. Academic approval cycles for programme changes also set the pace.
We hold learner data in several systems. Where does the GDPR fit?
The GDPR applies if you are established in the EU or EEA, or if you offer goods or services, courses included, to people in the EU or monitor their behaviour; in the United Kingdom the UK GDPR applies alongside the Data Protection Act 2018. There is no GDPR certificate as such. We build a record of processing across your student system, learning platform and spreadsheets, then the notices and the rights-request and breach procedures, with ISO/IEC 27701 where you want a certifiable privacy system.
We run professional examinations and issue certificates. Is ISO/IEC 17024 relevant?
It is, if you certify persons against a defined scheme rather than only confirming course completion. ISO/IEC 17024:2026 covers schemes, valid and fair examinations, impartial decisions and recertification. Accreditation is granted by an accreditation body after it assesses your system and witnesses an examination. Where you also train candidates, the standard expects a clear boundary between training and examining. Sterling guides the system into place with you; the accreditation body assesses and decides.
How much of our educators' time will implementation take?
It depends on how much of the system can be built from the records teaching already produces, which is where we start. Programme heads and a small internal team carry most of the work in weekly sessions with your consultant; educators take awareness training and join the parts that touch their teaching and assessment. Under Design™ your team drafts on our templates between sessions; under Drive™ Sterling carries that work. The gap analysis sets the actual effort.
