Security and ESG questionnaires · answers, evidence and fewer questionnaires next time

Security questionnaire help and ESG responses built on evidence your customer can check.

A customer has sent a security questionnaire, a vendor risk review, an EcoVadis invitation or a CDP request, and the deadline is fixed. Sterling's expert and experienced consultants find the evidence behind every answer, close the gaps that can accurately be closed in time, support the submission and show you when a certificate or report would answer most of the next one.

  • Security questionnaires, vendor risk reviews, due diligence packs, EcoVadis and CDP responses, in whatever format your customer sends
  • Every answer traced to a policy, record or report, and kept in Effivity as an answer library for the next request
  • The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements. Sterling does not certify; an accredited body audits and decides
  • Answers that survive follow-upEach answer states what you actually do, points to the proof and holds when the customer's reviewer asks to see it.
  • The deadline met, without overstatementA response submitted on time, with any gap disclosed alongside a remediation date rather than hidden behind a yes.
  • One library for every questionnaireApproved answers and evidence kept in Effivity, so the next request starts from checked work, not a blank spreadsheet.
  • A route to fewer questionnairesA clear view of whether ISO/IEC 27001, a SOC 2 report or an EcoVadis rating would answer most of what customers keep asking.

Which certificate or report answers the questions?

Most questionnaires circle a handful of frameworks. Know which ones you can point to.

Security questionnaires usually ask early on whether you hold ISO/IEC 27001 or a SOC 2 report, and a current certificate or report with the right scope often answers whole sections at once. ESG questionnaires lean on environmental, health and safety and anti-bribery systems, and on an EcoVadis rating or a CDP response that can be shared with more than one customer. These are the frameworks the questions come back to most.

Who does what

Choose how much of the work Sterling carries.

Two delivery models, one method. Design™ gives your team the structure, templates and coaching to prepare the response itself. Drive™ has Sterling consultants draft the response and assemble the evidence with your owners, under your approval. In both, your organisation reviews, signs and submits.

What the answers are worth is decided by your customer, or by EcoVadis or CDP where they score the response. Most organisations with a security, compliance or sustainability lead choose Design™; those facing a short deadline, or a long questionnaire with nobody free to run it, choose Drive™. The discovery call settles it.

Effivity · included with the engagement

Your system runs in software from the first workshop.

Effivity is the ISO and GRC automation platform built by the Sterling group and used in 50+ countries. Your consultant configures it within the agreed scope, so evidence accumulates as people do their work and the certification auditor reviews a live system rather than a binder. Sterling consulting clients get their subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost.

ISO & GRC software

Sterling Academy · included with the engagement

Your people learn the standard, not just the forms.

How we price

One all-inclusive proposal. Every component visible. No surprises, ever.

Total investment for questionnaire support depends on the number and length of the questionnaires, the frameworks they ask about, the current maturity of your controls and how much evidence already exists, which is why a Sterling proposal is built around your request. Where the work continues to a certificate, a report or a rating, the fees of the certification body, CPA firm or rating platform stay on their own line. What is fixed is how the proposal works.

  • One all-inclusive proposal for Sterling's work, software and learning. Consulting, Effivity and Sterling Academy access in one figure; the fee does not move when the work takes longer than we planned.
  • Certification-body fees identified separately. The body's audit days, travel and surveillance arrangements are shown as their own line, so the full programme cost is comparable across proposals.
  • Payment milestones tied to deliverables, not to the calendar: the gap analysis report, the documented system, the internal audit, the certificate.
  • Deliverables, responsibilities, assumptions and exclusions in writing, and nothing to sign to receive the proposal.

To prepare your proposal we need

  • The questionnaire, or its sections and format
  • Your customer's deadline
  • The certificates, reports or ratings you hold today
  • The services, sites and teams the questions cover
  • Whether more questionnaires are expected this year

That is enough for a scoped, all-inclusive proposal from a Sterling consultant in your region. There is no need to prepare a manual first.

Sterling OS™: how every engagement runs

Don’t be fooled by certification scams

Sterling against the alternatives.

The market offers four ways to a certificate. Three of them leave you with a system that does not run, a certificate that fails a customer's check, or both. This is what each route actually gives you.

FAQs

Questions clients ask before they engage us.

The specific answers for your questionnaire come from the discovery call. These are the general ones.

Will you fill in the questionnaire for us?

Under Drive™, yes: Sterling drafts every answer from your evidence and assembles the documents, and your owners review and approve before your organisation submits. Under Design™ your team drafts and we review. In neither model do we write an answer your evidence does not support, because the customer's reviewer can ask to see it, and an answer that fails that test costs more than an accurate partial one.

What if the accurate answer is no?

Say so, with what you do instead and when the gap will close. A disclosed gap with a compensating control and a dated plan is a normal answer; an unsupported yes that fails a follow-up question or a supplier audit undermines trust in the whole response. Where a gap can be closed properly before the deadline, we close it first and answer yes with the evidence.

Does ISO/IEC 27001 or a SOC 2 report answer a security questionnaire?

Often a large part of it. Many questionnaires ask early on whether you hold one, and a current certificate with the right scope, or a SOC 2 report covering the right services and period, can answer whole sections. Customers still ask about points outside the certificate's scope or the report's criteria, so the rest is answered from your own evidence. We map both, question by question.

How is an EcoVadis questionnaire different from a customer's security questionnaire?

EcoVadis scores the response. The platform tailors its questionnaire to your size, industry and countries of operation, asks you to upload documents that support your answers, and its analysts rate your management system from 0 to 100 across environment, labour and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement. The scorecard can then be shared with customers, so the evidence work matters as much as the wording.

A customer has asked us to respond through CDP. Where do we start?

With the request itself and the data you already hold. CDP runs an annual disclosure cycle and scores responses on climate change, forests and water security from D- to A, and a response submitted after the scoring deadline is received but not scored. Emissions questions need a greenhouse gas inventory; where you do not have one yet, we build it before drafting the response.

How long does it take?

As long as your customer's deadline allows, and we plan backwards from it. A questionnaire answered mostly from existing certificates and records moves quickly; one that exposes missing policies takes longer, because those documents have to be written, approved and put into use before they count. A first EcoVadis rating or CDP response usually runs over several months. Share the deadline on the discovery call and we will tell you what is achievable.

Can the answers be reused for the next questionnaire?

Yes, and that is where most of the saving lies. Approved answers and the evidence behind them are kept in Effivity with an owner and a review date, so the next questionnaire starts from answers already checked. Evidence is refreshed before it goes out of date, and new questions are added to the library as customers ask them.

Does Sterling sign or certify our response?

No. Your organisation signs and submits its own response and remains accountable for it. Sterling provides consulting, evidence preparation, software and training. Where a certificate, a SOC 2 report or a rating follows, an independent, accredited certification body, a licensed CPA firm or the rating platform assesses and decides, never Sterling.

When is it worth getting certified instead of answering questionnaires one by one?

When the same questions keep arriving from different customers. A certificate or report answers many of them at once and gives the reviewer something independent to rely on. After each response we compare what customers keep asking with what you can point to, and tell you whether ISO/IEC 27001, SOC 2, an EcoVadis rating or nothing at all is the right next step, and why.
