In short

FSSC 22000 certification in Indonesia at a glance

In Indonesia, FSSC 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Foundation FSSC licenses the certification bodies that may issue FSSC 22000 certificates, and that scheme ownership is why many brand owners and retailers name it in supplier requirements rather than ISO 22000 alone. The scheme combines ISO 22000 with sector prerequisite programmes and its own additional requirements on topics such as food defence, food fraud and allergen management. For Indonesian food, beverage, ingredient and packaging producers, the scheme sits beside a separate legal duty: products traded in Indonesia must carry halal certification issued by BPJPH under Undang-Undang Nomor 33 Tahun 2014, and the two are prepared most efficiently as one documented system with shared traceability and supplier control. Certification comes only from a licensed body accredited for the scheme; Sterling does not certify. The Jakarta office supports producers through gap assessment, prerequisite programme upgrades, hazard analysis and internal audit, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included in the engagement. The local route and questions follow.

The need

Who needs FSSC 22000 in Indonesia, and what happens without it

In Indonesia the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Food manufacturers supplying global brand owners and retailersCustomers specify FSSC 22000 in supplier requirements.
  • Producers who also need halal certificationScheme and halal requirements share traceability and supplier control.

Requirements

FSSC 22000 requirements in Indonesia

Strip away the vocabulary and FSSC 22000 asks a company to prove six things about food safety to the level global buyers expect.

The ISO 22000 system is completeHazard analysis, operational controls, verification and management review meet ISO 22000 in full.
Your sector's prerequisites are metThe prerequisite programmes the scheme sets for your type of operation are implemented and maintained.
Deliberate contamination is guarded againstA food defence threat assessment identifies how product could be tampered with, and proportionate controls are in place.
Food fraud is anticipatedVulnerability to fraud such as substitution, dilution or mislabelling is assessed, and mitigation is built into purchasing and checks.
Scheme requirements are appliedAdditional requirements such as allergen management, environmental monitoring and labelling are applied where relevant.
Culture backs the systemLeadership sets food safety culture objectives, communicates them and checks that behaviour on the floor matches the policy.

In Indonesia these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: FSSC 22000 explained →

Time

How long does FSSC 22000 certification take in Indonesia?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Indonesia these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Prerequisite programme maturity for the food chain category
  • Existing ISO 22000 or HACCP system
  • Food defence, food fraud and allergen controls in place

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does FSSC 22000 certification cost in Indonesia?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Indonesia these factors move both.

  • Number of sites and food chain categories
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Infrastructure upgrades for prerequisite programmes

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

FSSC 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Indonesia

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers FSSC 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Indonesia are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

FSSC 22000 in Indonesia: questions clients ask

What is the difference between ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000?

FSSC 22000 is a certification scheme built on ISO 22000. It adds sector prerequisite programmes and additional scheme requirements, which ISO 22000 on its own does not prescribe. Buyers who ask for FSSC 22000 want that extra layer, so check which one your customer names before choosing.

Does FSSC 22000 replace halal certification?

No. Halal certification is a separate legal obligation under Law 33 of 2014, and it is issued by BPJPH. FSSC 22000 does not stand in for it, so a food business selling in Indonesia may need both, each with its own application and assessment.

Who can issue an FSSC 22000 certificate?

Only a certification body licensed by Foundation FSSC and accredited for the scheme can issue an FSSC 22000 certificate. A general ISO 22000 body without that licence cannot. Ask any body you shortlist to show both the licence and the accreditation before you apply.
