In short

ISO 22000 certification in Sweden at a glance

In Sweden, ISO 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

A kitchen, a dairy or a distribution centre in Sweden has to prove more than good intentions, and the proof starts with the system Livsmedelsverket describes: procedures, own checks and follow-up, built on prerequisite programmes, HACCP-based procedures and traceability. ISO 22000 does not replace that duty, and the agency does not name it, but it gives the system a certifiable management framework that customers, tenders and export buyers recognise. ISO 22000 is a listed Swedac sub-area for food safety certification, and the certificate is issued by a certification body accredited by Swedac or by another body within the international recognition arrangements. Sterling's Enschede office prepares the hazard analysis, prerequisite programmes, traceability tests, internal audits and management review, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included in the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 22000 in Sweden, and what happens without it

In Sweden the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Food manufacturers and processorsA certified food safety management system strengthens the own-check system the law requires.
  • Food service, catering and distribution businessesCustomers and tenders ask for independent proof that hazards are controlled across handling steps.
  • Exporters and importers moving food through GothenburgForeign and domestic buyers screen suppliers for recognised food safety certification.
  • Producers of food and drinking water under the cyber lawLivsmedelsverket supervises their cyber duties too, so one management system can carry both.

Requirements

ISO 22000 requirements in Sweden

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22000 requires a company to prove six things about keeping food safe from supplier to customer.

The basics of hygiene are in placePrerequisite programmes cover premises, cleaning, pest control, personal hygiene, water, maintenance and supplier approval.
You analysed the hazardsBiological, chemical and physical hazards are identified for each product and process step, and the controls needed are decided.
Critical controls are monitoredControl measures are validated, monitored and acted on when limits are breached, following HACCP principles.
Unsafe product does not leaveTraceability, handling of potentially unsafe product, withdrawal and recall are planned and tested.
Food safety information flows along the chainInformation is exchanged with suppliers, customers, authorities and your own staff so hazards are not missed.
Leadership reviews and improvesManagement sets food safety policy and objectives, the system is verified and audited, and it is updated as risks change.

In Sweden these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22000 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 22000 certification take in Sweden?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Sweden these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of sites, products and process flows
  • State of prerequisite programmes and the hazard analysis
  • Traceability and recall readiness
  • Internal audit and management review evidence

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 22000 certification cost in Sweden?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Sweden these factors move both.

  • Number of sites and product lines in scope
  • Process complexity and allergen controls
  • Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Facility and monitoring equipment remediation

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Sweden

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Sweden are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Certification by a certification body accredited by Swedac or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). ISO 22000 is one of the sub-areas Swedac lists for management-system certification. Edition and transition details: ISO 22000 hub →

ISO 22000 in Sweden: questions clients ask

Does ISO 22000 replace the own-check system Swedish law requires?

No. Livsmedelsverket describes the legal requirement as a food safety system of procedures, own checks and follow-up, including prerequisite programmes and HACCP-based procedures, and it does not name ISO 22000. Certification can structure and prove that work for customers, but the duty to the control authority stays with you. Ask the authority how it views your system.

Which body accredits ISO 22000 certification in Sweden?

In Sweden that is Swedac. Its published sub-areas for food safety management system certification include ISO 22000, and it is a signatory to the related multilateral arrangements. Bodies accredited by other members of the arrangements are recognised too, so check that the accreditation scope on the certificate matches your kind of food business.

Is ISO 22000 the same as FSSC 22000?

They are related but not identical. FSSC describes FSSC 22000 as an ISO-aligned management system certification scheme that it owns, and Swedac lists ISO 22000 and the FSSC 22000 scheme part 2 as separate sub-areas. Customers sometimes name one specifically, so check the wording of the requirement before choosing.

Can a tender ask for ISO 22000?

It can, tender by tender. Swedac explains that a procuring authority can require that a supplier, product or process be certified according to a standard, and that this then becomes a qualification requirement to be met at bid submission. Read the notice for the exact standard and for whether equivalent evidence is accepted.
