ISO 27001 certification in Maldives at a glance
Three Maldivian instruments bear on ISO/IEC 27001. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Maldives keep asking for the certificate?
Bank licensing by the Maldives Monetary Authority weighs an applicant's risk management procedures, and the MMA also oversees payment systems under the National Payment System Act. Neither law names ISO/IEC 27001, yet banks, payment providers and the IT, telecom and cloud firms that serve them use the standard to show that information security risk is managed with discipline. Resort groups holding guest records and card data have the same need, and Article 24 of the Constitution protects private communications. The certification route is consistent: define the scope, assess risk, select controls in a Statement of Applicability, operate them, then pass an audit by an accredited certification body. ISO/IEC 27001:2022 is the current edition. Sterling's Mumbai office runs the risk assessment and control design with your team, prepares internal auditors through Sterling Academy and keeps evidence ready in Effivity, so the audit tests a system that already works.
Who needs ISO 27001 in Maldives, and what happens without it
In Maldives the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Banks licensed by the Maldives Monetary AuthorityThe MMA weighs risk management procedures when it licenses banks, and information security is part of that picture.
- Payment service providers and system operatorsThe MMA oversees payment systems under the National Payment System Act.
- IT, telecom and cloud providers serving banks and governmentTheir customers ask for certified security controls in contracts and tenders.
- Resorts and hotel groups holding guest and card dataGuest privacy is protected by the Constitution, and security controls protect the systems that hold guest data.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27001 requires a company to prove six things about how it protects the information it holds.
In Maldives these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27001 explained →

How long does ISO 27001 certification take in Maldives?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Maldives these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Scope of systems, sites and outsourced services
- Maturity of risk assessment and the Statement of Applicability
- Evidence that controls have operated for a period before the audit
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 27001 certification cost in Maldives?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Maldives these factors move both.
- Number of locations, systems and staff in scope
- Security tooling and remediation found in the gap assessment
- Third-party and cloud supplier reviews
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 27001 consultants and certification bodies in Maldives
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Maldives are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Maldives
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), and check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector; the buyer or regulator decides which accreditation it accepts. ISO/IEC 27001:2022 is the current edition. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27001 hub →
Audit language
Dhivehi is the national language and Acts are published in it, while regulator websites and many Gazette bid notices are in English; audits commonly run in English with interviews in Dhivehi where staff prefer it. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Document review and many interviews can be remote; data centres, server rooms and offices in scope are visited on-site at the certification body's discretion.
ISO 27001 in Maldives: questions clients ask
Does the Maldives Monetary Authority require ISO 27001?
Neither the Banking Act nor the National Payment System Act names ISO/IEC 27001. The MMA licenses banks, weighing risk management procedures among other factors, and oversees payment systems. Certification is a voluntary way to evidence security risk management; ask the MMA what it expects of your institution.
Why do IT providers in the Maldives seek ISO 27001?
Because banks, government bodies and large resort groups ask suppliers to prove their security controls. Gazette tender documents set their own qualification criteria, and contracts with regulated customers often include security clauses. A certificate from an accredited body answers many of those questions at once.
What does an ISO 27001 project involve for a Maldivian bank?
Defining the scope, running a risk assessment, choosing controls in a Statement of Applicability and operating them long enough to produce evidence. Outsourced services and cloud suppliers need review, and remediation found in the gap assessment drives cost. Internal audit and management review close the cycle before the certification audit.
Is there a privacy law that ISO 27001 supports?
The Constitution protects privacy: Article 24 says private and family life, home and private communications are to be respected. ISO/IEC 27001 protects the systems that hold personal data, and ISO/IEC 27701 adds privacy management on top. Ask your counsel which privacy obligations apply to your processing.
