ISO/IEC 27001 guide

ISO/IEC 27001 timeline: how long certification really takes, stage by stage

Clause by clause: ISO/IEC 27001:2022 requirements: every clause explained →

For a single-site organisation, four to eight months is realistic for a first ISO/IEC 27001 certificate. Here is each stage, what stretches or shortens it, what can overlap, when to book the certification body, and a week-by-week calendar for a 120-person SaaS company.

Key points

  • A first ISO/IEC 27001 certificate takes four to eight months from kick-off to the certification decision for a single-site organisation with capable IT staff; how many technical controls already work decides where you land.
  • The limit is operating evidence, not documents: access reviews, log reviews, incident records, an internal audit and a management review all need calendar time before Stage 2.
  • Centralised logging, single sign-on with prompt leaver removal, restore-tested backups and supplier reviews usually stretch the plan, and so does an unsettled scope.
  • Reserve certification-body dates during the build: Stage 1 needs several weeks' notice, and the decision comes only after Stage 2 findings are answered.

The short answer, and why it is months rather than weeks

Plan on four to eight months. Programmes finish near four when policies and security tooling mostly exist and leadership settles scope and risk criteria in the first fortnight; they run towards eight when access management, logging, backup or supplier assurance must be designed and adopted first. Several sites, or a programme timed to a SOC 2 examination, take longer again.

Drafting speed hardly matters, because an accredited certification body tests operation: risk assessments carried out, access reviewed, incidents or exercises handled, an internal audit and management review already held. None of that can be produced in advance, so a certificate offered within days is not accredited certification; How to verify an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate, and spot a fake one explains the checks.

ISO/IEC 27001 timeline by stage

The stages follow the four phases on our main ISO/IEC 27001 page, with the certification body's part split into three waits. They overlap, which is how seven stages fit into four to eight months.

StageTypical durationWhat lengthens or shortens it
Scope and gap analysis2 to 4 weeksHow fast leadership fixes the boundary; access to system owners, policies and consoles
Risk assessment and treatment decisions3 to 6 weeksAn existing risk method and criteria, or none; assets and systems in scope; risk owners' time
Control build and remediation4 to 14 weeks, overlapping the risk workControls to build rather than write up; tooling procurement; IT capacity beside production work
Operation, internal audit and management review8 to 12 weeks of records before Stage 2When the last significant control goes live; how often periodic controls run; how fast audit findings close
Application to Stage 14 to 8 weeks' noticeThe certification body's auditor calendar, the competence and language your scope needs, the season
Stage 1 to Stage 22 to 6 weeksThe concerns Stage 1 raises and how fast you close them
Stage 2 to certification decision2 to 6 weeks with minor findingsYour responses to nonconformities; a major one must be verified closed first

What moves each stage

  • Scope, systems and sites. Every product, cloud account, environment and team inside the boundary adds assets to assess and evidence to collect, and each extra location adds internal audit and certification-body audit time. An unsettled scope costs most: while leadership debates whether client-dedicated environments or an offshore support team are in, the risk assessment waits. See ISO/IEC 27001 scope: boundaries, interfaces and the mistakes that cost you.
  • Risk assessment maturity. With a working method, agreed criteria and appointed owners, the assessment takes a few weeks. From a standing start, agreeing the criteria with leadership is the slow step; ISO/IEC 27001 risk assessment and treatment, step by step sets out the method.
  • Control implementation. A policy can be approved in days; a control takes weeks to operate, built by people who also keep production running. The long items are usually centralised logging with alerts someone reviews, single sign-on with same-day leaver removal, restore-tested backups, vulnerability scanning with fix deadlines and supplier reviews.
  • Evidence accumulation. A control switched on last week has no history to sample. Periodic controls need one completed cycle on record before Stage 2; frequent ones such as log reviews, leaver processing and change approvals need several weeks of entries.

What runs in parallel, and what has to wait

Good programmes save time through overlap, not haste. Alongside the build you can write policies as their controls are configured, train everyone in scope once those policies are approved, prepare your internal auditors, collect quotations and reserve audit dates, and run the vulnerability assessment early enough for remediation and a retest to be on record before Stage 2.

The Statement of Applicability records treatment decisions, so it follows them; the internal audit needs weeks of operation to sample; and the management review takes audit results among its inputs, so it follows the audit.

ISO/IEC 27001 sets no minimum operating period. ISO/IEC 17021-1 frames readiness as evidence: at Stage 1 the certification body evaluates your preparedness for Stage 2 and whether internal audits and management reviews are being planned and performed. Some bodies state their own expectation, so ask when you apply. Our working rule is eight to twelve weeks of records between the last significant control going live and Stage 2, with the internal audit and management review finished before Stage 1.

The certification body's lead times

Allow a week or two for comparable quotations. Stage 1 is typically scheduled four to eight weeks after the application is accepted, later before year-end or when your scope needs particular technical or language competence. Stage 2 takes a few working days, sized by the audit time the body calculates under ISO/IEC 27006-1, explained in ISO/IEC 27001 certification cost: what moves the price.

ISO/IEC 17021-1 fixes no gap between the stages; the body must allow time for you to resolve the concerns Stage 1 raises. After Stage 2 you answer any nonconformities, and people outside the audit team decide. A major nonconformity needs its correction and corrective action verified first; if that cannot happen within six months of the last day of Stage 2, Stage 2 is conducted again. See ISO/IEC 27001 nonconformities: major, minor and how to close them and, for selection, Choosing an ISO/IEC 27001 certification body: accreditation, scope and quotes.

A worked calendar: 120-person SaaS company on public cloud

The company has one office and runs its platform on one public cloud provider. Consoles use multi-factor authentication and most tools single sign-on, but logs are not centralised or reviewed, access has never been reviewed, backups have never been test-restored, suppliers are unassessed and there is no risk register.

WeeksWhat happensWhat is on record afterwards
1 to 3Scope agreed; gap analysis against clauses 4 to 10 and the 93 Annex A controls; Effivity set upScope statement, gap report, owned action plan
3 to 8Asset inventory; risk criteria approved in week 4; risk assessment; treatment decisionsRisk register, Statement of Applicability, approved treatment plan
4 to 16Authentication gaps closed first, then single sign-on with a leaver workflow, centralised logging with alerts, a restore test, supplier reviews starting with the cloud providerControls in operation, approved policies
12 to 14Quotations compared; application accepted in week 14Stage 1 reserved for week 22, Stage 2 for week 26
12 to 18Vulnerability assessment and retest; awareness training for all 120 people; first quarterly access review; incident-response exerciseRemediation, training, access-review and exercise records
19 to 21Internal audit across the scope, then management reviewAudit report, corrective actions, minutes with decisions
22 to 25Stage 1 readiness review; its concerns closedStage 1 report, evidence of closure
26 to 30Stage 2; minor nonconformities answered; independent decisionCertification decision around week 30

Thirty weeks is roughly seven months, with Stage 2 ten weeks after the last significant control went live. With logging and single sign-on already complete, the audit dates could move several weeks earlier; a second product on separate infrastructure, a support centre abroad or a SOC 2 Type 2 period to align would push the plan to eight months or beyond. ISO/IEC 27001 implementation plan: phases, owners and deliverables turns such a calendar into a project plan.

How Sterling plans the calendar

A dated plan from the gap analysis, with audit dates reserved early.

Sterling's expert and experienced consultants turn the gap analysis into a week-by-week plan with owners, start the long technical items first and help you reserve certification-body dates during the build. Effivity, included with the engagement at no additional cost, holds the records from the first workshop, and the internal audit and management review are completed with you before Stage 1. We ensure successful certification for our clients. Sterling does not certify: the accredited certification body you choose audits and decides.

ISO/IEC 27001 timeline: questions buyers ask

Can ISO/IEC 27001 certification be done in under three months?

Not credibly for a first certificate. Even where controls already operate, the risk assessment, internal audit, management review and both audit stages each take time, and the certification body's calendar adds weeks. Offers measured in days usually mean an unaccredited certificate or a cut-short audit.

We already hold a SOC 2 report. How much sooner can we be certified?

Operating controls and existing evidence shorten the build and operation stages, which can bring you towards the shorter end of the range. The management system itself still has to be built: scope, a risk assessment against your own criteria, the Statement of Applicability, internal audit and management review. See ISO/IEC 27001 vs SOC 2: which one, or both?

Can Stage 1 be booked before the internal audit is finished?

Yes: Stage 1 checks that internal audits and management reviews are being planned and performed. We still finish both first, so corrective actions have weeks to produce proof before Stage 2.

Does a second office or a mostly remote workforce change the timeline?

A second office adds evidence, internal audit time and certification-body audit time. A remote workforce shifts effort to endpoint, remote-working and awareness controls; how much is audited remotely is the certification body's decision under its accreditation rules.

When is the next audit after certification?

The first surveillance audit falls no more than twelve months after the certification decision, then yearly until recertification in the third year; ISO/IEC 27001 surveillance and recertification: the three-year cycle explains each visit.
