In short

ISO 22301 certification in Maldives at a glance

Two Maldivian instruments bear on ISO 22301. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Maldives keep asking for the certificate?

Monsoon storms, a grounded supply vessel or a failed undersea cable can halt a Maldivian business faster than in most places, because so much depends on transport, power and connectivity reaching each island. ISO 22301 helps organisations decide in advance which activities matter most, how long they can stop and how they will recover. Banks and payment providers have a regulatory reason too: the Maldives Monetary Authority weighs risk management procedures when licensing banks and oversees payment systems, although neither law names the standard. Resort operators and suppliers to state companies use certification from an accredited body to show partners that continuity has been planned and exercised. Sterling's Mumbai office runs the business impact analysis with your team, writes plans people can follow and designs exercises scaled to the risks, with Effivity tracking actions and results.

The need

Who needs ISO 22301 in Maldives, and what happens without it

In Maldives the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Banks and payment providersThe MMA weighs risk management procedures when licensing banks and oversees payment systems.
  • Resort operators dependent on boats, seaplanes and supply chainsIsland operations depend on transport and supplies that weather or outages can interrupt.
  • Suppliers to public bodies and state companiesGazette tender documents set their own criteria and may ask for continuity arrangements.

ISO 22301 requirements in Maldives

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22301 requires a company to prove six things about how it keeps operating when something goes wrong.

You know what must keep runningA business impact analysis identifies your priority activities and how quickly each one must be resumed after disruption.
Leadership owns continuityTop management sets continuity policy and objectives, assigns roles and backs the programme with people and budget.
You assessed what could disrupt youRisks of disruption to priority activities, and to the resources they depend on, are assessed and treated.
Plans are written and readyResponse and recovery plans, and a defined incident response structure, exist for the scenarios that matter most to you.
You have tested themPlans are exercised, and lessons from exercises and real incidents are fed back into them.
You keep the programme currentContinuity performance is evaluated, internal audits and management reviews take place, and the programme improves over time.

In Maldives these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22301 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 22301 certification take in Maldives?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Maldives these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Business impact analysis across sites and islands
  • Dependencies on transport, power, connectivity and suppliers
  • Exercise programme and its results

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 22301 certification cost in Maldives?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Maldives these factors move both.

  • Number of sites and critical activities
  • Recovery arrangements such as alternate sites or suppliers
  • Exercise planning and evaluation

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 22301 consultants and certification bodies in Maldives

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22301 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Maldives are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 22301 in Maldives (2)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Maldives Banking Act (Law No. 24/2010)Does not name the standard
The MMA weighs risk management procedures when licensing banks; continuity planning is part of managing operational risk.
National Payment System Act (Law No. 8/2021)Does not name the standard
The MMA oversees payment systems; participants plan for continuity of payment services.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Maldives

Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), and check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector; the buyer or regulator decides which accreditation it accepts. Audit language

Dhivehi is the national language and Acts are published in it, while regulator websites and many Gazette bid notices are in English; audits commonly run in English with interviews in Dhivehi where staff prefer it. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

    Remote and on-site

Document review and many interviews can be remote; recovery sites and exercises may be observed on-site at the certification body's discretion.

ISO 22301 in Maldives: questions clients ask

Does the MMA require ISO 22301?

Neither the Banking Act nor the National Payment System Act names ISO 22301. The MMA weighs risk management procedures when licensing banks and oversees payment systems, so continuity planning is part of meeting its expectations. Ask the MMA directly about its requirements for your institution.

Why would a resort pursue ISO 22301?

Because an island resort depends on boats, seaplanes, fuel, desalination and connectivity that can all be interrupted. A business impact analysis identifies which services matter most and how long they can stop, and the plan sets recovery steps. Certification shows guests, owners and partners that this has been tested.

What is a business impact analysis?

It is the step that ranks activities by the harm their interruption would cause over time and sets recovery priorities and resources. For island operations it must cover transport, power, water, connectivity and key suppliers, which is why it often takes the most effort in the project.

How are continuity plans tested before certification?

Through an exercise programme, from tabletop walk-throughs to live recovery tests, with results reviewed and actions tracked. The certification body looks at exercise records and may observe recovery sites. Planning and evaluating exercises is a real cost driver, so scale them to the risks.
