ISO 27701 certification in Maldives at a glance
Two Maldivian instruments bear on ISO/IEC 27701. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Maldives keep asking for the certificate?
Guests' passports, card details and dietary needs pass through every Maldivian resort, and banks and IT providers hold comparable records for their own customers. Article 24 of the Constitution protects private and family life and private communications, and many guests and overseas clients bring their own countries' privacy laws with them. ISO/IEC 27701 extends an ISO/IEC 27001 information security management system with privacy controls for controllers and processors: mapping personal data, defining lawful purposes, handling individual requests, managing processors and transfers, and responding to incidents. Certification comes from an accredited body, usually together with ISO/IEC 27001. Sterling's Mumbai office maps your data flows, builds the privacy controls into your existing security system and trains your team through Sterling Academy, keeping records of processing and evidence in Effivity. Take your counsel's view on legal duties specific to your operations.
Who needs ISO 27701 in Maldives, and what happens without it
In Maldives the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Resort and hotel groups processing guest dataArticle 24 of the Constitution protects private life and communications, and guests expect careful handling of their data.
- Banks and payment providersCustomer data sits inside systems overseen by the MMA under banking and payment laws.
- IT and cloud providers processing data for clients abroadOverseas clients ask processors to evidence privacy controls under their own laws.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27701 requires a company to prove six things about how it handles personal data.
In Maldives these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27701 explained →

How long does ISO 27701 certification take in Maldives?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Maldives these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Existing ISO/IEC 27001 certification or readiness
- Mapping of personal data flows across systems and processors
- Obligations under clients' and guests' home-country laws
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 27701 certification cost in Maldives?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Maldives these factors move both.
- Number of processing activities and systems
- Processor and transfer arrangements
- Privacy notices and rights handling
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 27701 consultants and certification bodies in Maldives
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27701 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Maldives are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27701 in Maldives (2)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Constitution of the Republic of Maldives (2008), Article 24 | Does not name the standard Article 24 protects private and family life, home and private communications. |
| Maldives Banking Act (Law No. 24/2010) | Does not name the standard The MMA weighs risk management procedures when licensing banks; customer data protection is part of that risk. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Maldives
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), and check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector; the buyer or regulator decides which accreditation it accepts. ISO/IEC 27701 is certified together with, or as an extension of, ISO/IEC 27001, so check the body's accreditation covers both. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27701 hub →
Audit language
Dhivehi is the national language and Acts are published in it, while regulator websites and many Gazette bid notices are in English; audits commonly run in English with interviews in Dhivehi where staff prefer it. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Document review and many interviews can be remote; offices and data processing sites in scope may be visited on-site.
ISO 27701 in Maldives: questions clients ask
Is there a privacy right in Maldivian law?
It does, at the level of the Constitution. Article 24 protects each person's private and family life, home and private communications, and asks everyone to respect those rights in others. That is a constitutional guarantee rather than a detailed data code, and ISO/IEC 27701 offers a voluntary way to organise personal data handling around it. Your counsel can advise on duties that apply to your processing.
Do I need ISO/IEC 27001 before ISO/IEC 27701?
In practice yes. ISO/IEC 27701 extends an information security management system with privacy controls, and certification bodies audit it together with or after ISO/IEC 27001. Check the body's accreditation covers both, and plan the privacy scope so it matches the security scope already certified.
Why would a Maldivian resort pursue ISO/IEC 27701?
Resorts collect passports, payment details, health and dietary information and preferences from guests of many nationalities, whose home-country laws may follow the data. Mapping these flows from booking to departure and controlling them in one privacy system lowers risk and answers the questions tour operators and partners ask.
What drives the effort of an ISO/IEC 27701 project?
The number of processing activities and systems, how data moves to processors and other countries, and how notices and individual requests are handled. A clear data map early in the project keeps the remaining work focused and shows where processor contracts need attention.
