Implementation walkthrough
How to implement ISO/IEC 27001: video walkthrough
A walkthrough of an ISO/IEC 27001 implementation, from the scope a client's questionnaire calls for to the risk assessment, the Statement of Applicability and the two-stage certification audit.
Key takeaways
- Match the scope to the client questionnaire or tender that started the project.
- The risk assessment drives control selection; Annex A is the reference list you compare against.
- The Statement of Applicability records which controls apply and why.
- Controls must operate and produce records before the certification body's Stage 1 and Stage 2.
- A certificate is only as strong as the risk assessment behind it.
What makes an ISO/IEC 27001 implementation different
ISO/IEC 27001 is the international standard for an information security management system, or ISMS: a governed, risk-based way of protecting the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the information an organisation holds and the systems that process it. Security questionnaires, tenders and procurement teams name it when they want to know whether a supplier's security is managed rather than improvised.
Its mechanism shapes the whole implementation. The standard does not hand you one fixed list of safeguards. You assess your information security risks against criteria you define, decide how each will be treated, select the controls you need, check the selection against Annex A and record the outcome in a Statement of Applicability. This short film walks through that route; the stages below follow the ISO/IEC 27001 hub.
From scope to certificate, stage by stage
Define the scope the certificate must cover: services, sites, systems, cloud platforms, headcount and the interfaces with clients and suppliers, matched to the questionnaire or tender behind the project. A gap analysis then compares existing policies, controls and records with clauses 4 to 10 and the Annex A controls of the 2022 edition, keeps what works and sets an action plan with owners and dates.
The core of the build is the asset inventory, the risk assessment against agreed criteria, the treatment decisions, the Statement of Applicability and a treatment plan the risk owners approve. Controls are put into operation, people are trained and a vulnerability assessment is carried out, with records accumulating as work is done. Internal audit across clauses and controls and a management review come next, and findings are closed with evidence before an independent certification body, accredited for ISMS certification, carries out its two-stage assessment and decides.
Sterling's expert and experienced consultants carry this with your IT and business teams under Sterling OS™: Design™ for guided implementation with ISMS templates and risk workshops, or Drive™ when Sterling consultants take on the agreed work through to audit preparation. Assets, risks, the Statement of Applicability, controls, incidents and audits are held together in Effivity.

ISO/IEC 27001: questions people ask
Is ISO/IEC 27001 only for IT companies?
No. It applies to any organisation that holds information worth protecting, which is every organisation with clients, employees or a bank account. IT firms, BPOs and financial services feel the demand first because their clients ask; law firms, healthcare providers and public bodies certify for the same reasons.
What is the difference between ISO/IEC 27001 and SOC 2?
ISO/IEC 27001 is an international management system standard; an accredited certification body audits it and issues a certificate with a defined scope. SOC 2 is an attestation report on a service organisation's controls against the AICPA Trust Services Criteria, issued by a CPA firm and expected mainly by US clients. They overlap heavily in the controls examined, so one evidence base can serve both, but neither replaces the other; ask your clients which they accept.
How many controls does ISO/IEC 27001 have, and do we need all of them?
Annex A of the 2022 edition lists 93 reference controls in four themes: 37 organisational, 8 people, 14 physical and 34 technological. You are not required to implement every one. You must select controls from your risk treatment, compare the selection with Annex A so nothing necessary is missed, and record in the Statement of Applicability which controls apply, why, and whether they are implemented, with a justification for any you exclude.
Do we need a penetration test to get certified?
The standard requires you to manage technical vulnerabilities and assess risks; it does not prescribe a particular test. A vulnerability assessment is included in a Sterling ISMS engagement, and its findings feed the treatment plan. Whether a deeper penetration test is warranted depends on your risks, your clients' contracts and your regulator.
Does Sterling issue the ISO/IEC 27001 certificate?
No. Sterling consults, trains and prepares. An independent certification body accredited to ISO/IEC 17021-1 and ISO/IEC 27006-1 audits the ISMS in two stages and decides. A provider offering consulting and the certificate on one invoice is selling paper.
