In short

ISO 27001 certification in Poland at a glance

Rozporządzenie w sprawie Krajowych Ram Interoperacyjności (Dz. U. 2024 poz. 773), section 19 refers to ISO/IEC 27001, yet none of the Polish instruments checked makes it compulsory. Buyers in Poland ask for it anyway.

Polish public bodies have an information security obligation written into a Council of Ministers regulation. Section 19 of the Krajowe Ramy Interoperacyjności regulation requires an information security management system and treats the requirement as met where it is developed on the basis of PN-ISO/IEC 27001, with PN-ISO/IEC 27002 for controls and PN-ISO/IEC 27005 for risk. Private-sector pressure comes from the amended National Cybersecurity System Act, whose Art. 8 requires key and important entities to run an information security management system, from the Komisja Nadzoru Finansowego in banking, and from clients of IT, cloud and shared-service providers who ask for a certificate in due diligence. The certificate is issued by a certification body, ideally accredited by the Polish Centre for Accreditation (PCA). Sterling's Frankfurt office builds the system from risk assessment to internal audit, serving Polish clients on-site where needed, and includes Effivity and Sterling Academy. The need

Who needs ISO 27001 in Poland, and what happens without it

In Poland the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Public bodies and entities performing public tasksThe interoperability regulation requires an information security management system, deemed met when built on PN-ISO/IEC 27001.
  • Key and important entities under the national cybersecurity systemThe Act requires an information security management system with risk assessment and listed measures.
  • Banks, insurers and other financial entitiesThe KNF is the cybersecurity competent authority for banking and financial market infrastructure, alongside DORA duties.
  • IT, cloud, BPO and shared-service providersOverseas and domestic clients ask for an independently certified information security management system in due diligence.

ISO 27001 requirements in Poland

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27001 requires a company to prove six things about how it protects the information it holds.

You know what you are protectingThe scope is defined: the information, systems, locations and people that matter, and who inside and outside relies on them.
Management owns itTop management sets the information security policy and objectives, assigns roles and gives the effort the resources it needs.
You decided what could go wrong, and what to do about itSecurity risks are assessed against agreed criteria, and each is treated with a recorded choice of safeguards and the reasons for it.
The safeguards work every dayAccess, suppliers, devices, backups, incidents and staff awareness are managed as routine operations, not one-off projects.
You can show itPolicies, risk decisions and records are kept, so an auditor sees the system working in practice rather than on paper.
You check yourselvesSecurity performance is measured, internal audits and management reviews take place, and what they find is put right.

In Poland these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27001 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 27001 certification take in Poland?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Poland these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Scope: sites, systems, cloud and outsourced services
  • Maturity of risk assessment and the Statement of Applicability
  • Evidence of internal audit and management review
  • Supplier and processor control arrangements

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 27001 certification cost in Poland?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Poland these factors move both.

  • Number of sites, systems and staff in scope
  • Control remediation, including technical testing
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Integration with ISO/IEC 27701, 22301 or other systems

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 27001 consultants and certification bodies in Poland

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Poland are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27001 in Poland (3)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Rozporządzenie w sprawie Krajowych Ram Interoperacyjności (Dz. U. 2024 poz. 773), section 19Refers to / expects
Requires an information security management system and deems the requirement met where the system is developed on the basis of Polish Standard PN-ISO/IEC 27001, with PN-ISO/IEC 27002 and PN-ISO/IEC 27005 for controls and risk; certification is not itself required.
National Cybersecurity System Act as amended (Dz. U. 2026 poz. 252), Art. 8Expected in practice
Key and important entities must implement an information security management system; the Act does not name ISO/IEC 27001.
Polskie Centrum Akredytacji (PCA) — national accreditation bodyMarket driver
Accredited ISO/IEC 27001 certification is available through the national accreditation body; no mandate.

"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 27001 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 27001 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Poland

Use a certification body accredited for ISO/IEC 27001 by the Polish Centre for Accreditation (PCA) or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27001 hub →

Audit language

Audits are held in Polish or English; agree the audit language and the language of the Statement of Applicability and policies with the certification body at application. Public-sector clients may require Polish documents.

Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; data centres and operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 27001 in Poland: questions clients ask

Is ISO 27001 required for Polish public bodies?

Public bodies must operate an information security management system under section 19 of the Krajowe Ramy Interoperacyjności regulation. The requirement is deemed met where the system is built on the basis of Polish Standard PN-ISO/IEC 27001. The regulation speaks of building on the standard rather than holding a certificate, so confirm what your supervising entity expects with counsel.

Does ISO 27001 satisfy the information security duty for key and important entities?

It supports it but is not named as proof. Art. 8 of the amended National Cybersecurity System Act requires an information security management system with risk assessment and listed technical and organisational measures, and it does not mention ISO/IEC 27001. Your competent authority decides what is sufficient, so map the certificate to the Act's list and take advice.

Which Polish Standards sit alongside PN-ISO/IEC 27001 in public-sector rules?

PN-ISO/IEC 27002 for establishing controls and PN-ISO/IEC 27005 for risk management. Paragraph 3 of section 19 of the interoperability regulation names them as the standards on which controls, risk management and auditing are based when the management system is developed on PN-ISO/IEC 27001. Align your risk method and control set with both.

Who accredits ISO 27001 certification bodies in Poland?

The Polskie Centrum Akredytacji (PCA), Poland's national accreditation body, which states that it is a full signatory to the EA and Global ACI arrangements covering management-system certification. Accreditation is scoped, so ask the certification body for evidence that ISO/IEC 27001 and your sector fall inside its PCA scope before you appoint it.
