ISO 27001 certification in Brazil at a glance
One Brazilian instrument bears on ISO/IEC 27001. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Brazil keep asking for the certificate?
Resolução CMN nº 4.893 and Resolução BCB nº 85 shape how Brazilian financial institutions think about information security: a written cybersecurity policy, incident records, continuity scenarios and due diligence on cloud and processing providers. Neither text names ISO/IEC 27001, which is why the certificate works as evidence rather than as a rule. The LGPD adds a second driver for any organisation holding personal data of people in Brazil, requiring security measures and notice of relevant incidents. Cgcre, Inmetro's accreditation coordination, is a Global ACI Full Member whose recognised scopes include ISO/IEC 27001. Sterling's New York office supports scoping, risk assessment, control design and internal audits for Brazilian banks, payment firms and software suppliers, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.
Who needs ISO 27001 in Brazil, and what happens without it
In Brazil the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Banks, fintechs and payment institutionsTheir regulators require a cybersecurity policy, incident handling and due diligence on providers, which an information security management system structures.
- SaaS, cloud and managed service providers selling to financial institutionsInstitutions must assess the providers of processing, storage and cloud services they contract, and a certificate shortens that review.
- BPO and contact-centre firms handling overseas clients' dataClient security schedules usually ask for ISO/IEC 27001 plus evidence of controls over personal data.
- Companies that process personal data of people in BrazilThe LGPD requires technical and administrative security measures, and a certified system is a structured way to show them.
- Health, insurance and education technology providersSensitive data and automated profiling raise the cost of an incident under the LGPD.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27001 requires a company to prove six things about how it protects the information it holds.
In Brazil these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27001 explained →

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.
How long does ISO 27001 certification take in Brazil?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Brazil these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Scope of systems, locations and outsourced services
- Maturity of asset, access, change and supplier controls
- Time to run a risk assessment and internal audit cycle
- Certification body availability
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 27001 certification cost in Brazil?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Brazil these factors move both.
- Number of sites, users and cloud environments in scope
- Technical controls to add, such as logging or encryption
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
- Penetration testing and internal audit support
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 27001 consultants and certification bodies in Brazil
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Brazil are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27001 in Brazil (3)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Resolução CMN nº 4.893 of 26 February 2021 and Resolução BCB nº 85 of 8 April 2021 | Expected in practice The texts require a cybersecurity policy, incident handling, continuity-test scenarios and due diligence on data processing and cloud providers, and they do not name ISO/IEC 27001; an institution may use the standard to organise those controls. |
| Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados Pessoais (Law No. 13,709 of 14 August 2018) | Related The Law requires security measures against unauthorised access and accidental or unlawful loss, and notification of relevant incidents to the ANPD and data subjects; it does not name ISO/IEC 27001. |
| Cgcre (Inmetro) and its Global ACI recognition | Market driver Global ACI lists ISO/IEC 27001 (ISMS) among the management systems scopes recognised for Cgcre, and the same listing shows ISO/IEC 27006-1 as the supporting criteria. |
"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 27001 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 27001 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Brazil
Use a certification body accredited for ISO/IEC 27001 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Brazil's national accreditation body is the Coordenação-Geral de Acreditação (Cgcre) of Inmetro, which Global ACI lists as a Full Member and MRA signatory. Global ACI's entry for Cgcre lists ISO/IEC 27001 among its recognised scopes. Ask each body for its accreditation certificate and check that the scope covers the standard and your sector. The accredited certification body decides, not Sterling. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27001 hub →
Audit language
Portuguese is the usual language of regulators, contracts and audit records, while English is common inside multinationals; agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Information security audits mix document and control testing, which is often remote, with visits to offices, operations floors and data centres in scope.
ISO 27001 in Brazil: questions clients ask
Does the Banco Central require ISO 27001 from Brazilian banks?
Neither Resolução CMN nº 4.893 nor Resolução BCB nº 85 names the standard. They require a cybersecurity policy, incident records, continuity-test scenarios and checks on providers of cloud and processing services. Banks therefore choose how to evidence those controls, and many use ISO/IEC 27001. Ask your supervisor or your banking customer which evidence it accepts.
Can an ISO 27001 certificate help with the LGPD?
It helps with the security side only. The LGPD wants measures protecting personal data against unauthorised access and accidental loss, and an information security management system documents them. The Law also covers purposes, legal bases, rights and an encarregado, none of which a security certificate delivers. Treat the certificate as supporting evidence and take advice on the rest.
Which Brazilian body accredits ISO 27001 certification bodies?
Cgcre, the accreditation coordination of Inmetro. Global ACI's page for Cgcre lists ISO/IEC 27001 and the ISO/IEC 27006-1 criteria among its recognised scopes. A certification body accredited elsewhere may also serve you. Compare accreditation certificates and ask each body to show that its scope lists information security management systems.
Can one certificate cover a Brazilian office and cloud-hosted services?
Yes, if the scope statement names both and the controls reach the cloud environment. The certification body audits the organisation's controls, not the provider's, so you must show supplier due diligence, access control and logging for the hosted systems. Agree the scope wording, locations and exclusions with the body before the first audit.
