ISO 27001 certification in Austria at a glance
NISG 2026 duties on risk-management measures and proof of their effectiveness is the instrument itself: it applies to the organisations within its scope, and buyers and partners in Austria ask for evidence that you meet it.
The Austrian cybersecurity statute stops short of naming a standard, which is exactly why an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate matters to many organisations. The Netz- und Informationssystemsicherheitsgesetz 2026, in force since 1 October 2026, asks essential and important entities to apply risk-management measures that take account of recognised standards and later to evidence implementation to the Bundesamt für Cybersicherheit, with valid certificates able to support part of the proof. Suppliers to those entities, and ICT providers to banks and insurers under DORA, meet the same questions in due diligence. The certificate itself comes from a body accredited by Akkreditierung Austria or an equivalent accreditation body, after a stage 1 and stage 2 audit. Sterling's Frankfurt office scopes the system, runs the risk assessment, writes controls and rehearses the internal audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.
Who needs ISO 27001 in Austria, and what happens without it
In Austria the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Essential and important entities under the NISG 2026The Act requires entities to apply risk-management measures that take account of recognised standards and later to evidence implementation, so an ISO/IEC 27001 system gives a ready structure.
- Suppliers and managed-service providers to those entitiesThe supply-chain security duty in the Act pushes security due diligence down to providers, even though the Act does not name ISO/IEC 27001.
- ICT providers to banks, insurers and investment firmsDORA makes the financial entity answerable for ICT third-party risk, and the FMA is the competent authority.
- Critical entities and their service partnersThe Minister of the Interior designates critical entities that analyse risk and take resilience measures, which in practice involves their ICT providers.
- SaaS and digital-service firms in AustriaCustomers in regulated sectors ask for independently certified information security management before contracting.
Not sure which of these applies to you?Answer a short set of questions and your readiness report arrives by e-mail.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27001 requires a company to prove six things about how it protects the information it holds.
In Austria these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27001 explained →

How long does ISO 27001 certification take in Austria?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Austria these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Whether the organisation is an essential or important entity under the NISG 2026
- Maturity of existing controls, internal audit and management review
- Number of sites, cloud tenants and suppliers in scope
- Certification body scheduling around Austrian holiday periods
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 27001 certification cost in Austria?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Austria these factors move both.
- Size of the scope and number of sites
- Depth of control remediation needed
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
- Effort to align the system with NISG 2026 measure and evidence duties
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 27001 consultants and certification bodies in Austria
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Austria are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27001 in Austria (4)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| NISG 2026 duties on risk-management measures and proof of their effectiveness | The instrument itself Entities apply technical, operational and organisational measures that take account of relevant national, European and international standards; the list covers incident handling, business continuity and crisis management, supply-chain security, vulnerability handling, cryptography, access control and multi-factor authentication, and entities later evidence implementation to the authority, with relevant valid certificates able to support the operational and organisational part. |
| Netz- und Informationssystemsicherheits-Verordnung (NISV 2026), BGBl. II Nr. 290/2026 | The ordinance itself Issued by the cybersecurity authority on 1 October 2026, it applies the technical and methodological requirements of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2690 to entity types that regulation does not cover, sets four risk categories (technological, human, ICT supply chain and site-related) and adds criteria for significant incidents; it does not name ISO/IEC 27001. |
| Regulation (EU) 2022/2554 (DORA), supervised in Austria by the FMA | Regulator page The FMA names itself the competent authority for DORA in Austria, working closely with the Oesterreichische Nationalbank, and says the regulation applies from 17 January 2025 to financial entities. |
| Akkreditierung Austria as the Austrian national accreditation body | Regulator page The Federal Minister for Economy set up Akkreditierung Austria as a department of the ministry; it accredits conformity assessment bodies established in Austria. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Austria
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by Akkreditierung Austria, Austria's national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Check that the body's accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27001 hub →
Audit language
German is the official language of Austria and English is common in international groups and technology firms. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.
Remote and on-site
Stage 1 and stage 2 audits are normally on-site; remote elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules.
ISO 27001 in Austria: questions clients ask
Does the Austrian NIS2 law name ISO/IEC 27001?
No. The NISG 2026 asks for risk-management measures that take account of relevant national, European and international standards, and the NISV 2026 ordinance applies the requirements of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2690; neither names ISO/IEC 27001. A certified system can still support the evidence the authority asks for. Check scope and expectations with the Bundesamt für Cybersicherheit or your counsel.
Can an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate serve as proof under the NISG 2026?
It can support the proof but does not replace it. After the authority asks, an entity has its measures verified by an independent body on the authority's terms, and the Act says relevant valid certificates can evidence the operational and organisational implementation. The technical part still needs verification. Treat scope and format as questions for the authority.
Who issues an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate in Austria?
Never Sterling: an accredited certification body issues it. Pick a body whose accreditation, from Akkreditierung Austria or an equivalent body, names ISO/IEC 27001 and covers your sector. Sterling's part is the information security management system, risk assessment, statement of applicability and internal audit before the two certification audits.
Does DORA change how a supplier to Austrian banks approaches ISO/IEC 27001?
It raises the stakes for due diligence. The FMA says it is the competent authority for DORA in Austria, working with the Oesterreichische Nationalbank, and the regulation covers ICT third-party risk, so banks and insurers examine their providers. The FMA page does not name ISO/IEC 27001, so the certificate is evidence, not a legal requirement.
