ISO 22301 certification in Austria at a glance
NISG 2026 duties on risk-management measures and proof of their effectiveness is the instrument itself: it applies to the organisations within its scope, and buyers and partners in Austria ask for evidence that you meet it.
Continuity has moved from good practice to a named duty for many Austrian organisations. The Netz- und Informationssystemsicherheitsgesetz 2026 lists keeping operations running, backup management, recovery after an emergency and crisis management among its risk-management measures, the Resilienz kritischer Einrichtungen-Gesetz asks designated critical entities to analyse risk and take resilience measures, and DORA covers ICT risk and incident handling for financial entities under the Finanzmarktaufsicht. None names ISO 22301, but a certified continuity system gives each regime recorded evidence of impact analysis, recovery strategies and exercises. Certification comes from a body accredited by Akkreditierung Austria or an equivalent accreditation body, never from Sterling. Sterling's Frankfurt office builds the analysis, plans and exercises with your team, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 22301 in Austria, and what happens without it
In Austria the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Essential and important entities under the NISG 2026The required measures include keeping operations running, backup management, disaster recovery and crisis management.
- Designated critical entitiesThe RKEG has the Minister of the Interior designate critical entities that carry out risk analysis and resilience measures.
- Banks, insurers and payment firmsDORA covers ICT risk management and incident handling, and the FMA is the competent authority.
- Suppliers to those organisationsCustomers examine providers' continuity arrangements as part of supply-chain due diligence.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22301 requires a company to prove six things about how it keeps operating when something goes wrong.
In Austria these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22301 explained →

How long does ISO 22301 certification take in Austria?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Austria these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Scope of services and sites in the continuity system
- Completeness of business impact analysis and recovery strategies
- Exercise and testing history
- Certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 22301 certification cost in Austria?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Austria these factors move both.
- Number of critical services and sites
- Recovery capability investment, which is separate from certification
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately
- Integration with ISO/IEC 27001
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 22301 consultants and certification bodies in Austria
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22301 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Austria are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 22301 in Austria (4)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| NISG 2026 duties on risk-management measures and proof of their effectiveness | The instrument itself Entities apply technical, operational and organisational measures that take account of relevant national, European and international standards; the list covers incident handling, business continuity and crisis management, supply-chain security, vulnerability handling, cryptography, access control and multi-factor authentication, and entities later evidence implementation to the authority, with relevant valid certificates able to support the operational and organisational part. |
| Resilienz kritischer Einrichtungen-Gesetz (RKEG), BGBl. I Nr. 60/2025 | The instrument itself The Federal Minister of the Interior designates critical entities, which carry out a risk analysis and take resilience measures, and the Minister supervises them and informs the NIS authorities. |
| Regulation (EU) 2022/2554 (DORA), supervised in Austria by the FMA | Regulator page The FMA names itself the competent authority for DORA in Austria, working closely with the Oesterreichische Nationalbank, and says the regulation applies from 17 January 2025 to financial entities. |
| Akkreditierung Austria as the Austrian national accreditation body | Regulator page The Federal Minister for Economy set up Akkreditierung Austria as a department of the ministry; it accredits conformity assessment bodies established in Austria. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Austria
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by Akkreditierung Austria, Austria's national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Check that the body's accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here. Edition and transition details: ISO 22301 hub →
Audit language
German is the official language of Austria and English is common in international groups and technology firms. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.
Remote and on-site
Audits are mostly on-site; exercises and recovery tests may be witnessed or sampled remotely at the certification body's discretion.
ISO 22301 in Austria: questions clients ask
Does the Austrian NIS2 law require business continuity?
Yes, as one of the risk-management measures. The NISG 2026 list includes keeping operations running, such as backup management and recovery after an emergency, and crisis management. The Act does not name ISO 22301 and asks for measures that take account of relevant standards, so a certified continuity system can support the evidence. Confirm applicability with the authority or counsel.
How does the RKEG relate to ISO 22301?
The Resilienz kritischer Einrichtungen-Gesetz has the Minister of the Interior designate critical entities, which then carry out a risk analysis and take resilience measures, under supervision. It does not name ISO 22301, but a continuity management system is a recognised way to organise part of that work. Check with the Ministry whether you are designated.
Does DORA make ISO 22301 relevant for Austrian financial entities?
It makes continuity capability a regulatory topic. The FMA says it is the competent authority for DORA, which applies from 17 January 2025 and covers ICT risk management, incident handling, resilience testing and third-party risk. The FMA page does not name ISO 22301, so the certificate is evidence rather than a requirement.
Who certifies ISO 22301 and how does Sterling help?
An accredited certification body certifies; Sterling does not. Choose one accredited for ISO 22301 by Akkreditierung Austria or an equivalent body. Sterling prepares the system from the Frankfurt office: business impact analysis, recovery strategies, plans, exercises and internal audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.
