SOC 2 attestation in Austria at a glance

NISG 2026 duties on risk-management measures and proof of their effectiveness is the instrument itself: it applies to the organisations within its scope, and buyers and partners in Austria ask for evidence that you meet it.

SOC 2 reaches Austrian companies through customers, not regulators. Enterprise buyers, including those serving banks under DORA or entities covered by the NISG 2026, collect independent evidence about providers, and a SOC 2 report from a licensed CPA firm is the document US-style procurement expects. It is an attestation, issued under professional standards that the AICPA says it promulgates, and not a certificate; Sterling does not attest. Software, cloud and deep-tech firms that Austria's investment agency promotes sell abroad into exactly these reviews. Sterling's Frankfurt office scopes the trust services criteria, designs and documents the controls, gathers evidence and runs a readiness review before the CPA firm starts its examination, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement. Austrian-specific questions are answered below.

The need

Who needs SOC 2 in Austria, and what happens without it

In Austria the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • SaaS and cloud providers selling to enterprisesUS and multinational customers ask for a SOC 2 report during procurement.
  • Service providers to Austrian banks and insurersDORA places ICT third-party risk on financial entities, and a SOC 2 report is one assurance document in their due diligence.
  • Providers to entities covered by the NISG 2026Supply-chain security is among the required measures, so customers ask providers for independent assurance.
  • Deep-tech and software firms scaling internationallyAustria's investment agency lists deep tech including cybersecurity, and such firms meet US-style due diligence abroad.

SOC 2 requirements in Austria

Strip away the vocabulary and SOC 2 asks a service organisation to report on six things about the controls behind its service.

You describe your system accuratelyA system description sets out your services, infrastructure, people, data and the boundaries of what the report covers.
Security is designed inControls protect the system against unauthorised access and use; security is the one category every SOC 2 report includes.
Access is granted on need and reviewedLogical and physical access is approved on need, removed when no longer required and reviewed regularly.
Changes and operations are controlledSystem changes are authorised and tested, and operations are monitored so incidents are detected and handled.
Risks and vendors are assessedRisks to your commitments, including those coming from vendors and business partners, are assessed and acted on.
Controls work over timeFor a Type 2 report, a licensed CPA firm tests that the controls operated effectively across the review period.

In Austria these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: SOC 2 explained →

How Sterling gets an Austrian company ready for its SOC 2 report

How to get a SOC 2 report in Austria

One team from the Frankfurt office carries the work from scoping to report. Clients in Austria are served from Sterling's Frankfurt office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

    1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
    2. Gap assessment against SOC 2 and the Austrian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
    3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
    4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before any external review.
    5. The independent examination and reportA licensed CPA firm performs the examination and issues the report. Sterling supports the examination.

    Time

How long does SOC 2 attestation take in Austria?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Austria these are the factors that set the timeline.

    • Trust services criteria in scope
    • Control maturity and evidence history
    • Observation period chosen
    • CPA firm availability

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

    Cost

How much does SOC 2 attestation cost in Austria?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the CPA firm’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Austria these factors move both.

    • Scope of systems and criteria
    • Remediation and tooling
    • CPA firm fees, quoted separately
    • Evidence automation and monitoring

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

    Choosing a partner

SOC 2 consultants and auditors in Austria

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; a licensed CPA firm then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

    • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers SOC 2 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
    • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Austria are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
    • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
    • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive SOC 2 in Austria (4)

      InstrumentHow it treats the standard
AICPA as owner of the SOC professional standardsScheme rule
The AICPA says it promulgates the professional standards for SOC engagements, which CPA firms perform for service organisations.
Regulation (EU) 2022/2554 (DORA), supervised in Austria by the FMARegulator page
The FMA names itself the competent authority for DORA in Austria, working closely with the Oesterreichische Nationalbank, and says the regulation applies from 17 January 2025 to financial entities.
NISG 2026 duties on risk-management measures and proof of their effectivenessThe instrument itself
Entities apply technical, operational and organisational measures that take account of relevant national, European and international standards; the list covers incident handling, business continuity and crisis management, supply-chain security, vulnerability handling, cryptography, access control and multi-factor authentication, and entities later evidence implementation to the authority, with relevant valid certificates able to support the operational and organisational part.
Invest in Austria industry focusMarket driver
The Austrian Business Agency's investment site lists life sciences, mobility (automotive, rail and aviation), microelectronics, green tech, deep tech including cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing as its industry focus.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Austria

Attestation, not certification: a SOC 2 report is issued by a licensed CPA firm after an examination under AICPA standards. Sterling prepares controls and evidence but does not attest. Choose the CPA firm early and agree the criteria, the period and whether you want a point-in-time or a period-of-time report. Edition and transition details: SOC 2 hub →

      Audit language

SOC 2 reports are written in English for customers. Internal records can be in German or English; agree the language of evidence with the CPA firm.

      Remote and on-site

Readiness work can be remote or on-site; the CPA firm decides how fieldwork is performed.

SOC 2 in Austria: questions clients ask

Who issues a SOC 2 report for an Austrian company?

A licensed CPA firm, after an examination under professional standards that the AICPA says it promulgates for SOC engagements. It is an attestation report, not a certificate, and Sterling does not issue it. Agree the criteria, system boundary and period with the firm before readiness work begins.

Why do Austrian customers ask for SOC 2 reports?

Mostly for third-party assurance. DORA puts ICT third-party risk on financial entities, supervised by the FMA, and the NISG 2026 lists supply-chain security among its measures, so customers collect independent evidence about providers. Neither law names SOC 2. Use the report alongside ISO/IEC 27001, depending on what each customer accepts.

Is SOC 2 better than ISO/IEC 27001 for an Austrian provider?

Neither is better in general; they answer different buyers. ISO/IEC 27001 is a certificate from an accredited body and is widely recognised in Europe, while SOC 2 is an attestation report that US-style procurement asks for. Many providers hold both and reuse controls. Ask your target customers which they require.

What does Sterling do on a SOC 2 project?

Sterling prepares the company: scoping, control design, policies, evidence collection and a readiness review, from the Frankfurt office, on-site where needed, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included. The CPA firm performs the examination and issues the report, and it alone decides the opinion.
