In short

ISO 27001 certification in Tanzania at a glance

In Tanzania, ISO/IEC 27001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Security duties in Tanzania now come from two directions. Section 27 of the Personal Data Protection Act, 2022 asks every controller for safeguards suited to the risk, a data protection officer, processor contracts and breach notification to the Commission, and the Bank of Tanzania's March 2026 draft cybersecurity guidelines set board oversight, CISO, third-party and penetration testing expectations for financial service providers. Neither names ISO/IEC 27001, yet an ISMS is the practical way to show both are under control, and banks, fintechs, telecoms, software and BPO providers are asked for it by clients. SADCAS's international recognition does not yet list information security, so certificates usually carry accreditation from another economy, issued by an accredited certification body. Sterling's Nairobi office builds the risk assessment, controls and evidence with your team, drawing on 20+ years of practice, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 27001 in Tanzania, and what happens without it

In Tanzania the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Banks, payment service providers and fintechsThe Bank of Tanzania's draft cybersecurity guidelines set governance, CISO, third-party and testing expectations that an ISMS can organise.
  • Any controller or processor of personal dataThe Personal Data Protection Act requires reasonable security safeguards, a data protection officer and processor contracts.
  • Telecoms, cloud, software and BPO providersClients at home and abroad ask service providers for certified information security before sharing data.
  • Suppliers of IT systems to public bodiesSome tenders on NeST ask for information security evidence in their technical requirements.

ISO 27001 requirements in Tanzania

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27001 requires a company to prove six things about how it protects the information it holds.

You know what you are protectingThe scope is defined: the information, systems, locations and people that matter, and who inside and outside relies on them.
Management owns itTop management sets the information security policy and objectives, assigns roles and gives the effort the resources it needs.
You decided what could go wrong, and what to do about itSecurity risks are assessed against agreed criteria, and each is treated with a recorded choice of safeguards and the reasons for it.
The safeguards work every dayAccess, suppliers, devices, backups, incidents and staff awareness are managed as routine operations, not one-off projects.
You can show itPolicies, risk decisions and records are kept, so an auditor sees the system working in practice rather than on paper.
You check yourselvesSecurity performance is measured, internal audits and management reviews take place, and what they find is put right.

In Tanzania these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27001 explained →

How Sterling gets a Tanzanian company certified

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 27001 and the Tanzanian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.

  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.

Time

How long does ISO 27001 certification take in Tanzania?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Tanzania these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Scope boundaries across offices, data centres and cloud services
  • Maturity of risk assessment and the Statement of Applicability
  • Supplier and outsourcing controls
  • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 27001 certification cost in Tanzania?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Tanzania these factors move both.

  • Number of sites, systems and staff in scope
  • Technical remediation such as logging, access control or backup
  • Penetration testing
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 27001 consultants and certification bodies in Tanzania

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Tanzania are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27001 in Tanzania (3)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Personal Data Protection Act, 2022 (Act No. 11 of 2022), Cap. 44The law
Section 27 requires reasonable security safeguards, a data protection officer, processor contracts and breach notification to the Commission; it names no ISO standard.
Bank of Tanzania Draft Cybersecurity Guidelines for Financial Service Providers, 2026Context
Draft published for comment in March 2026 under section 71 of the Banking and Financial Institutions Act, 2006. board oversight, a CISO, third-party risk, incident reporting and penetration testing; it names no ISO standard.
SADCAS recognition scopes (list dated 31 December 2025)Context
The scopes listed for SADCAS cover ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 22000 and product certification; other management system standards are accredited elsewhere.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Tanzania

Choose a certification body accredited for ISO/IEC 27001 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). The recognition list dated 31 December 2025 does not show ISO/IEC 27001 among SADCAS's management system scopes, so a certificate used in Tanzania may carry accreditation from another economy; check the accreditation body, the scope and your customer's acceptance before you sign. Audit language

Acts are published with a Kiswahili text and an English version, and bodies such as TBS and the PDPC publish in both languages. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

Remote and on-site

Remote audit of documents and some interviews is common; data centres, offices and operational controls are normally sampled on-site.

ISO 27001 in Tanzania: questions clients ask

Does Tanzanian law require ISO 27001?

No law found requires the certificate. The Personal Data Protection Act requires reasonable security safeguards, a data protection officer and processor contracts, and the Bank of Tanzania's 2026 draft cybersecurity guidelines set governance and testing expectations for financial service providers, but neither names ISO/IEC 27001. Certification is a strong way to evidence both. Confirm sector duties with your regulator.

What does the Bank of Tanzania's draft cybersecurity guidance expect?

The March 2026 draft, published for comment, asks financial service providers for board oversight, a Chief Information Security Officer, third-party and outsourcing risk management, incident reporting to the Bank and penetration testing by an independent firm licensed by TCRA. It is a draft, so track the final text with the Bank before treating any detail as binding.

Can SADCAS accredit an ISO 27001 certification body?

Not within the scopes shown for SADCAS on the recognition list dated 31 December 2025, which cover quality, environment, safety and food safety systems. ISO/IEC 27001 certificates used in Tanzania therefore usually carry accreditation from another economy within the international arrangements. Check the accreditation body and scope on the certificate, and confirm your customer accepts it.

How does ISO 27001 support the Personal Data Protection Act?

It supplies the security part. Section 27 of the Act requires safeguards suited to the risk, a data protection officer, processor contracts and breach notification to the Commission; an ISMS gives you risk assessment, controls, supplier management and incident handling to match. Adding ISO/IEC 27701 extends it to privacy management. Check legal interpretation with your counsel.
