ISO 22000 certification in Poland at a glance
In Poland, ISO 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
ISO 22000 sits on top of a duty that Polish food businesses already carry. The Chief Sanitary Inspectorate explains that under Art. 5 of Regulation (EC) 852/2004 every operator must develop and implement a procedure based on HACCP principles, covering the process from raw materials to market and backed by internal control. ISO 22000 wraps a management system around that work: leadership, planning, prerequisite programmes, hazard analysis, verification, internal audit and improvement. It is voluntary, and its audience is food manufacturers, ingredient and packaging suppliers, exporters facing foreign buyers, and plants preparing for FSSC 22000, which Foundation FSSC says holds Global Food Safety Initiative recognition. The certificate comes from a certification body accredited by the Polish Centre for Accreditation (PCA) or another body within the international recognition arrangements. Sterling's Frankfurt office builds the system with plant teams and prepares them for the certification audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement.
Who needs ISO 22000 in Poland, and what happens without it
In Poland the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Food manufacturers and processorsThe legal HACCP-based procedure is the base on which a food safety management system is built.
- Ingredient, packaging and logistics suppliers to food companiesFood customers ask suppliers to show a documented food safety system.
- Exporters of Polish food productsForeign buyers ask for independent evidence of food safety management.
- Plants preparing for FSSC 22000 or another recognised schemeISO 22000 work carries over into scheme requirements.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22000 requires a company to prove six things about keeping food safe from supplier to customer.
In Poland these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22000 explained →

How long does ISO 22000 certification take in Poland?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Poland these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of products, process flows and sites in scope
- State of prerequisite programmes and hazard analysis
- Verification evidence, internal audit and management review
- Certification body scheduling around production peaks
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 22000 certification cost in Poland?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Poland these factors move both.
- Number of sites and product categories
- Hygiene and facility remediation
- Laboratory testing and equipment calibration
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Poland
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Poland are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Poland
Use a certification body accredited for ISO 22000 by the Polish Centre for Accreditation (PCA) or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 22000 hub →
Audit language
Audits are held in Polish or English; agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a tender or contract.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.
ISO 22000 in Poland: questions clients ask
Is ISO 22000 certification required in Poland?
No. The legal duty on food business operators is a procedure based on HACCP principles under Art. 5 of Regulation (EC) 852/2004, which the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate describes. ISO 22000 certification is a voluntary management-system step that buyers may ask for. Check with your customers and, on the legal duty, with counsel.
How does ISO 22000 relate to the legal HACCP duty?
ISO 22000 builds a management system around the HACCP work the law already requires. The Chief Sanitary Inspectorate explains that the HACCP procedure covers every stage from receiving raw materials to placing food on the market, with internal control to check it works. A food safety management system adds planning, leadership, audit and improvement around that core.
Who accredits ISO 22000 certification bodies in Poland?
Poland's national accreditation body, the Polskie Centrum Akredytacji (PCA), appointed by government under Regulation (EC) 765/2008. Before engaging a certification body for a food plant, ask for its PCA accreditation certificate and read the scope, because a body can be accredited for ISO 22000 yet not for your food category or process type.
Should we choose ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000?
Let your buyers decide. Foundation FSSC states that FSSC 22000 holds Global Food Safety Initiative recognition, which some retailers and multinationals require, while ISO 22000 certification is an accredited management-system certificate. Ask your main customers which one they accept before you decide.
