In short

FSSC 22000 certification in Poland at a glance

In Poland, FSSC 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Which food safety scheme a Polish plant needs is decided by the people it sells to. Foundation FSSC states that FSSC 22000 holds Global Food Safety Initiative recognition and is Global ACI approved, and the scheme provides a public register where certified organisations can be checked; buyers differ in which recognised scheme they accept, and some plants hold more than one. Underneath any scheme sits the legal baseline the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate describes: under Art. 5 of Regulation (EC) 852/2004, food business operators must develop and implement a procedure based on HACCP principles. FSSC 22000 adds the ISO 22000-based management system and the scheme's additional requirements. Certification is by a certification body licensed by the Foundation, with accreditation to be checked against the Polish Centre for Accreditation (PCA) or another recognised body. Sterling's Frankfurt office advises on scheme choice, builds prerequisite programmes and the food safety plan, and supports implementation, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.

The need

Who needs FSSC 22000 in Poland, and what happens without it

In Poland the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Food and beverage manufacturers supplying large retailers and food-service buyersBuyers specify which recognised food safety scheme they accept, and FSSC 22000 is one of them.
  • Packaging manufacturers for food contactFood buyers extend scheme requirements to packaging suppliers.
  • Exporters of Polish food productsForeign customers ask for recognised-scheme certification as a condition of listing.
  • Plants already operating HACCP-based procedures or ISO 22000The legal HACCP duty and ISO 22000 provide the base on which the scheme is built.

Requirements

FSSC 22000 requirements in Poland

Strip away the vocabulary and FSSC 22000 asks a company to prove six things about food safety to the level global buyers expect.

The ISO 22000 system is completeHazard analysis, operational controls, verification and management review meet ISO 22000 in full.
Your sector's prerequisites are metThe prerequisite programmes the scheme sets for your type of operation are implemented and maintained.
Deliberate contamination is guarded againstA food defence threat assessment identifies how product could be tampered with, and proportionate controls are in place.
Food fraud is anticipatedVulnerability to fraud such as substitution, dilution or mislabelling is assessed, and mitigation is built into purchasing and checks.
Scheme requirements are appliedAdditional requirements such as allergen management, environmental monitoring and labelling are applied where relevant.
Culture backs the systemLeadership sets food safety culture objectives, communicates them and checks that behaviour on the floor matches the policy.

In Poland these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: FSSC 22000 explained →

Time

How long does FSSC 22000 certification take in Poland?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Poland these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of production lines, products and sites in scope
  • State of prerequisite programmes and the food safety plan
  • Food defence and food fraud assessments
  • Certification body availability and scheduling around production peaks

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does FSSC 22000 certification cost in Poland?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Poland these factors move both.

  • Number of sites, lines and product categories
  • Facility and hygienic-design remediation
  • Laboratory testing and environmental monitoring
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

FSSC 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Poland

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers FSSC 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Poland are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

FSSC 22000 scheme (Foundation FSSC)Scheme rule
The Foundation states that the scheme holds Global Food Safety Initiative recognition and is Global ACI approved, and its website provides a public register and certification body portal.
HACCP-based procedures under Regulation (EC) No 852/2004, Art. 5 (Chief Sanitary Inspectorate)Baseline
The legal hygiene and HACCP duty applies to food business operators whether or not they hold a scheme certificate.

The national accreditation body for Poland; check any accreditation claim in the FSSC register and the body's own listing.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Poland

Certification is by a certification body licensed by Foundation FSSC and working under the scheme's requirements; the FSSC website provides a public register. Check the body's licence and its accreditation, from the Polish Centre for Accreditation (PCA) or another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). No body is named here. Edition and transition details: FSSC 22000 hub →

    Audit language

Audits are held in Polish or English; agree the audit language with the certification body at application. Retail customers often issue specifications in English.

    Remote and on-site

The scheme rules and the certification body decide which audit elements may be remote; food production sites are visited on-site.

FSSC 22000 in Poland: questions clients ask

Is FSSC 22000 required by Polish law?

No. The legal duty on Polish food business operators is to develop and implement a procedure based on HACCP principles under Art. 5 of Regulation (EC) 852/2004, as the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate explains. FSSC 22000 is a voluntary scheme that buyers choose to accept. Check with your customers which schemes they recognise before you invest.

Does FSSC 22000 have international recognition?

According to Foundation FSSC, yes: its FSSC 22000 certification scheme holds the Consumer Goods Forum's Global Food Safety Initiative recognition and is Global ACI approved. That recognition is what many buyers rely on when they accept the scheme. Confirm with each buyer that it accepts the current version of the scheme.

How do I check that an FSSC certification body is genuine?

Use the public register on the Foundation FSSC website and ask the body for its licence and accreditation details. The register is the scheme owner's own tool for checking certified organisations, so it is a better test than a body's marketing. Also confirm that its accreditation, from the Polish Centre for Accreditation or another body in the international arrangements, covers the scheme.

Should we start with HACCP or go straight to FSSC 22000?

Start with what the law already demands. HACCP-based procedures are a legal duty for food business operators, so a working food safety plan and hygiene programmes are the foundation for any scheme. FSSC 22000 adds the management-system and scheme requirements on top, which you can build into the same documentation. Choose between schemes by asking your main buyers.
