ISO 22000 certification in Czechia at a glance
In Czechia, ISO 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
A food safety management system under ISO 22000 grows out of the legal baseline Czech producers already carry. Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 requires permanent procedures based on the HACCP principles, and SZPI supervises the safety, quality and labelling of foods. ISO 22000 adds management commitment, communication, prerequisite programmes and review, and ČIA, the national accreditation body, lists the standard among its recognised certification scopes. Manufacturers, brewers, packaging and ingredient suppliers and catering groups use it to satisfy retail and export approval, and some customers go on to FSSC 22000. The certificate comes from an accredited certification body, never from Sterling. Sterling's Frankfurt office writes the system with your team, tests it through internal audits and trains staff via Sterling Academy, with Effivity included in the engagement and 20+ years of delivery experience.
Who needs ISO 22000 in Czechia, and what happens without it
In Czechia the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Food manufacturers and processorsA certified food safety management system builds on the HACCP duty under EU hygiene law.
- Packaging and ingredient suppliersFood customers extend supplier approval to materials and services.
- Brewers and beverage producersRetail and export buyers often ask for an independently certified system.
- Catering and food-service groupsMulti-site operators use a management system to align kitchens and suppliers.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22000 requires a company to prove six things about keeping food safe from supplier to customer.
In Czechia these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22000 explained →

How long does ISO 22000 certification take in Czechia?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Czechia these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Hazard analysis and prerequisite programme maturity
- Number of sites and product lines
- Supplier approval and traceability systems
- Certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 22000 certification cost in Czechia?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Czechia these factors move both.
- Sites and product categories in scope
- Prerequisite programme and facility remediation
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately
- Monitoring and laboratory costs
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Czechia
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Czechia are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 22000 in Czechia (4)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs | EU law Food business operators must put in place, implement and maintain a permanent procedure or procedures based on the HACCP principles. |
| ČIA's list of multilateral recognition agreements | Recognition ČIA's own page lists it as an EA MLA signatory for management system certification and shows recognition for certification to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 22000, ISO 13485, ISO 50001 and ISO 45001. |
| SZPI (Státní zemědělská a potravinářská inspekce, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority) | Supervision SZPI describes itself as the state supervisory body mainly for the safety, quality and correct labelling of foods; its pages do not make a third-party certificate compulsory. |
| ČIA (Český institut pro akreditaci, o.p.s.) as the Czech national accreditation body | Recognition ČIA describes itself as the national accreditation body founded by the Czech government, accrediting laboratories, inspection bodies and certification bodies for management systems, products and persons. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Czechia
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by ČIA, the Czech national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Check that the body's accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here. Edition and transition details: ISO 22000 hub →
Audit language
Czech is the official language and English is commonly used in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.
Remote and on-site
Audits are on-site because premises, hygiene and production lines must be seen; document review can be remote.
ISO 22000 in Czechia: questions clients ask
Is ISO 22000 required for Czech food companies?
No. The legal duty in Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 is a permanent procedure based on the HACCP principles, and a third-party certificate is not mandated by that Regulation or by SZPI's pages. ISO 22000 is a voluntary management system that customers sometimes request. Ask SZPI or your counsel about statutory duties, and each buyer about its approval criteria.
How is ISO 22000 recognised in Czechia?
Through ČIA. Its own page lists food safety management system certification to ISO 22000 among the scopes recognised within the international arrangements, alongside ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO/IEC 27001. Ask your certification body for its accreditation certificate so you can see exactly which food categories its scope covers.
What does SZPI check if a producer already holds ISO 22000?
SZPI continues its own supervision of the safety, quality and labelling of foods, and certification does not replace it. Inspectors look at what the law requires, including HACCP-based procedures and records. Holding the certificate can help you show those procedures are managed, but the regulator's inspection stands separately.
When should a Czech producer choose FSSC 22000 over ISO 22000?
When customers say so. FSSC 22000 builds on ISO 22000 with extra scheme requirements, and many retailers and multinationals name the scheme they accept. If your buyers are satisfied with ISO 22000, it can be enough. Check the contract wording or approval procedure, and ask the certification body about transition options.
