In short

ISO 27001 certification in Belgium at a glance

Law of 26 April 2024 establishing a framework for the cybersecurity of networks and information systems of general interest for public security (the NIS2 Law) is the instrument itself: it applies to the organisations within its scope, and buyers and partners in Belgium ask for evidence that you meet it.

Which route will the Centre for Cybersecurity Belgium accept? For essential entities under the NIS2 Law, the answer is either a CyberFundamentals verification or ISO/IEC 27001, and the ISO path asks for the certification scope, the Statement of Applicability and the latest internal audit report. That puts a certified information security management system at the centre of many Belgian programmes, particularly for IT providers, financial-sector suppliers and firms that serve covered customers. The certificate is issued by a certification body, ideally accredited by BELAC, after a stage 1 and stage 2 audit. Sterling works from its Enschede office to scope the system, run the risk assessment, write the controls and rehearse the internal audit, and Effivity and Sterling Academy come with the engagement. The questions below deal with the Belgian specifics.

The need

Who needs ISO 27001 in Belgium, and what happens without it

In Belgium the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Entities choosing the ISO/IEC 27001 route to NIS2 conformityThe CCB names ISO/IEC 27001 next to CyberFundamentals as a reference framework, and conformity assessment is mandatory for essential entities.
  • Suppliers to NIS2-covered entitiesOrganisations not directly covered may still be asked to comply because they serve entities that are.
  • ICT providers to banks, insurers and payment institutionsDORA puts ICT third-party risk on the financial entity, so providers face security questions even though the Bank's report does not name ISO/IEC 27001.
  • SaaS and managed-service firms in Brussels, Flanders and WalloniaEnterprise buyers often ask for an independently certified information security management system before signing.

Requirements

ISO 27001 requirements in Belgium

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27001 requires a company to prove six things about how it protects the information it holds.

You know what you are protectingThe scope is defined: the information, systems, locations and people that matter, and who inside and outside relies on them.
Management owns itTop management sets the information security policy and objectives, assigns roles and gives the effort the resources it needs.
You decided what could go wrong, and what to do about itSecurity risks are assessed against agreed criteria, and each is treated with a recorded choice of safeguards and the reasons for it.
The safeguards work every dayAccess, suppliers, devices, backups, incidents and staff awareness are managed as routine operations, not one-off projects.
You can show itPolicies, risk decisions and records are kept, so an auditor sees the system working in practice rather than on paper.
You check yourselvesSecurity performance is measured, internal audits and management reviews take place, and what they find is put right.

In Belgium these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27001 explained →

How Sterling gets a Belgian company certified

How to get ISO 27001 certified in Belgium

One team from the Enschede office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients in Belgium are served from Sterling's Enschede office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 27001 and the Belgian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
  5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.
Included in every engagement

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.

Time

How long does ISO 27001 certification take in Belgium?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Belgium these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Whether the entity is essential or important under the NIS2 Law
  • Existing controls and evidence of internal audit and management review
  • Number of sites and cloud environments in scope
  • Certification body scheduling around the summer holiday period

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 27001 certification cost in Belgium?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Belgium these factors move both.

  • Size of the scope and number of sites
  • Depth of control remediation needed
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Extra effort if CyberFundamentals mapping is wanted in parallel

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 27001 consultants and certification bodies in Belgium

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Belgium are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27001 in Belgium (4)

The ISO/IEC 27001 route requires the certification scope, the Statement of Applicability and the latest internal audit report; the CyberFundamentals route asks for a Basic or Important verification, obtained or in progress, or a signed agreement with an accredited assessment body; a direct inspection route may lead straight to supervisory measures.

Organisations not directly covered may still need to comply because they serve covered entities; registration runs through the CCB's Safeonweb@Work portal.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Belgium

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by BELAC, the national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that its accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27001 hub →

Audit language

Dutch, French and German are the official languages and English is common in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.

Remote and on-site

Stage 1 and stage 2 audits are normally done on-site; remote elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules.

ISO 27001 in Belgium: questions clients ask

Does the CCB accept ISO/IEC 27001 for NIS2 conformity?

Yes, as one route. The CCB's guidance for essential entities says those on the ISO/IEC 27001 path submit the certification scope, the Statement of Applicability and the most recent internal audit report. The alternative is a CyberFundamentals verification. Which route fits depends on your entity, so confirm it with the CCB before committing to a scope.

What is the difference between ISO/IEC 27001 and CyberFundamentals?

ISO/IEC 27001 is an international management-system standard certified by an accredited body, while CyberFundamentals is the CCB's own free framework with four levels: Small, Basic, Important and Essential. The CCB links CyberFundamentals with ISO/IEC 27001 and 27002, NIST CSF, CIS Controls and IEC 62443, and says its Important and Essential levels match NIS2.

We are a supplier, not an essential entity. Do customers still ask for ISO/IEC 27001?

Often, yes. The federal government's NIS2 notice says organisations that are not directly covered may still have to comply because they serve entities that are. Expect security questionnaires and requests for evidence from covered customers. Whether a certificate is required is a contract question, so read each customer's terms and ask them directly.

Who issues the ISO/IEC 27001 certificate for a Belgian company?

A certification body, not Sterling. Choose one accredited by BELAC for this standard, or by another body within the international recognition arrangements, and check that the scope covers your sector. EA lists BELAC as an EA MLA signatory for management-system certification. Sterling prepares the management system and the evidence before that audit.
