In short

ISO 22000 certification in Austria at a glance

Lebensmittelsicherheits- und Verbraucherschutzgesetz (LMSVG), BGBl. I Nr. 13/2006 is the instrument itself: it applies to the organisations within its scope, and buyers and partners in Austria ask for evidence that you meet it.

ISO 22000 sits on top of a legal duty. Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 already requires every Austrian food business operator to maintain HACCP-based procedures and records, and the Lebensmittelsicherheits- und Verbraucherschutzgesetz frames food safety requirements, yet neither demands a certificate. ISO 22000 adds the management system around the hazard analysis, with policy, prerequisite programmes, communication, internal audit and review, and it is the base for FSSC 22000, which FSSC says holds GFSI recognition. Certification comes from a body accredited by Akkreditierung Austria or an equivalent accreditation body, never from Sterling. Food manufacturers, ingredient and packaging suppliers and caterers ask for it when customers want independent proof. Sterling's Frankfurt office builds the system and rehearses the internal audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.

The need

Who needs ISO 22000 in Austria, and what happens without it

In Austria the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Food manufacturers and processorsRegulation (EC) No 852/2004 requires HACCP-based procedures, and ISO 22000 organises them within a certified management system.
  • Packaging, ingredient and logistics suppliers to food companiesFood customers qualify suppliers on food safety management and often accept an ISO 22000 certificate as evidence.
  • Caterers and food service operatorsThey run HACCP-based procedures as well, and a certified system gives a recognised structure.
  • Businesses moving towards FSSC 22000ISO 22000 is the base standard the FSSC scheme builds on.

Requirements

ISO 22000 requirements in Austria

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22000 requires a company to prove six things about keeping food safe from supplier to customer.

The basics of hygiene are in placePrerequisite programmes cover premises, cleaning, pest control, personal hygiene, water, maintenance and supplier approval.
You analysed the hazardsBiological, chemical and physical hazards are identified for each product and process step, and the controls needed are decided.
Critical controls are monitoredControl measures are validated, monitored and acted on when limits are breached, following HACCP principles.
Unsafe product does not leaveTraceability, handling of potentially unsafe product, withdrawal and recall are planned and tested.
Food safety information flows along the chainInformation is exchanged with suppliers, customers, authorities and your own staff so hazards are not missed.
Leadership reviews and improvesManagement sets food safety policy and objectives, the system is verified and audited, and it is updated as risks change.

In Austria these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22000 explained →

How Sterling gets an Austrian company certified

  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.

Time

How long does ISO 22000 certification take in Austria?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Austria these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of products, processes and sites
  • Quality of hazard analysis and prerequisite programmes
  • Validation of control measures
  • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 22000 certification cost in Austria?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Austria these factors move both.

  • Scope, sites and product ranges
  • Remediation of hygiene and traceability controls
  • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately
  • Laboratory testing and validation work

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Austria

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Austria are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 22000 in Austria (4)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs, Article 5The regulation itself
Food business operators put in place, implement and maintain a permanent procedure based on the HACCP principles and keep documents and records that show it is applied.
Lebensmittelsicherheits- und Verbraucherschutzgesetz (LMSVG), BGBl. I Nr. 13/2006The instrument itself
It is the national act on safety requirements for food, consumer goods and cosmetics; it does not itself require a third-party food certificate.
FSSC as scheme owner of FSSC 22000Scheme rule
FSSC states that its FSSC 22000 scheme holds GFSI recognition, that it is Global ACI approved, and that licensed certification bodies are monitored through its integrity programme.
Akkreditierung Austria as the Austrian national accreditation bodyRegulator page
The Federal Minister for Economy set up Akkreditierung Austria as a department of the ministry; it accredits conformity assessment bodies established in Austria.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Austria

Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by Akkreditierung Austria, Austria's national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Check that the body's accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here. Edition and transition details: ISO 22000 hub →

Audit language

German is the official language of Austria and English is common in international groups and technology firms. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.

Remote and on-site

Audits are on-site because they examine production hygiene and records; remote sampling of documents is at the certification body's discretion.

ISO 22000 in Austria: questions clients ask

Is ISO 22000 required by Austrian law?

No. Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 requires HACCP-based procedures and records, and the LMSVG is the national act on food safety requirements, but neither demands ISO 22000 or any third-party certificate. The certificate is voluntary evidence that customers may ask for. Check legal duties with the competent food authority or your counsel.

How does ISO 22000 differ from a HACCP plan?

A HACCP plan is the statutory procedure based on the HACCP principles in the regulation, while ISO 22000 wraps it in a management system with policy, objectives, communication, prerequisite programmes, internal audit and management review, and allows certification by an accredited body. The plan is necessary either way; the standard adds the system around it.

When should an Austrian food company choose FSSC 22000 over ISO 22000?

When customers ask for a scheme with Global Food Safety Initiative recognition. FSSC says FSSC 22000 holds that recognition and builds on the same management system approach with extra requirements. If your buyers accept ISO 22000 alone, it may be enough, so ask them before you decide.

Who certifies ISO 22000 and what does Sterling do?

An accredited certification body issues the certificate, never Sterling. Choose one accredited for this standard and the food chain category by Akkreditierung Austria or an equivalent body. Sterling prepares the system from the Frankfurt office: hazard analysis, prerequisite programmes, traceability, internal audit and management review, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.
