In short

FSSC 22000 certification in Austria at a glance

In Austria, FSSC 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Austrian food producers meet FSSC 22000 mostly through buyers. Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 already obliges every food business operator to run permanent HACCP-based procedures and keep records, and the scheme adds a certified food safety management system that FSSC says holds GFSI recognition and is Global ACI approved. Certificates are issued by certification bodies that FSSC licenses and monitors, with accreditation from Akkreditierung Austria or an equivalent body, never by Sterling. Manufacturers supplying retailers and brand owners, and ingredient and beverage producers, ask for it most. Existing ISO 22000 holders can build on their system. Sterling's Frankfurt office runs the gap analysis, builds the prerequisite and food defence controls, and rehearses the internal audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs FSSC 22000 in Austria, and what happens without it

In Austria the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Food manufacturers supplying retailers and brand ownersFSSC states that its FSSC 22000 scheme holds GFSI recognition, which is why buyers that accept GFSI-recognised schemes ask for it.
  • Ingredient and beverage producersThese firms often need a single scheme that covers the food safety management system and prerequisite programmes.
  • Food businesses already running HACCPRegulation (EC) No 852/2004 already requires HACCP-based procedures; the scheme adds a certified management system on top.
  • Companies with ISO 22000 certificatesThey can build on the existing system and add the scheme's additional requirements.

Requirements

FSSC 22000 requirements in Austria

Strip away the vocabulary and FSSC 22000 asks a company to prove six things about food safety to the level global buyers expect.

The ISO 22000 system is completeHazard analysis, operational controls, verification and management review meet ISO 22000 in full.
Your sector's prerequisites are metThe prerequisite programmes the scheme sets for your type of operation are implemented and maintained.
Deliberate contamination is guarded againstA food defence threat assessment identifies how product could be tampered with, and proportionate controls are in place.
Food fraud is anticipatedVulnerability to fraud such as substitution, dilution or mislabelling is assessed, and mitigation is built into purchasing and checks.
Scheme requirements are appliedAdditional requirements such as allergen management, environmental monitoring and labelling are applied where relevant.
Culture backs the systemLeadership sets food safety culture objectives, communicates them and checks that behaviour on the floor matches the policy.

In Austria these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: FSSC 22000 explained →

Time

How long does FSSC 22000 certification take in Austria?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Austria these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Food chain category and number of production lines
  • State of prerequisite programmes and HACCP plan
  • Food defence and food fraud assessments
  • Certification body scheduling under the scheme rules

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does FSSC 22000 certification cost in Austria?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Austria these factors move both.

  • Scope, sites and product ranges
  • Remediation of hygiene, allergen and traceability controls
  • Certification body audit and licence-related fees, quoted separately
  • Laboratory testing and validation work

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

FSSC 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Austria

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers FSSC 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Austria are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive FSSC 22000 in Austria (4)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
FSSC as scheme owner of FSSC 22000Scheme rule
FSSC states that its FSSC 22000 scheme holds GFSI recognition, that it is Global ACI approved, and that licensed certification bodies are monitored through its integrity programme.
Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs, Article 5The regulation itself
Food business operators put in place, implement and maintain a permanent procedure based on the HACCP principles and keep documents and records that show it is applied.
Akkreditierung Austria as the Austrian national accreditation bodyRegulator page
The Federal Minister for Economy set up Akkreditierung Austria as a department of the ministry; it accredits conformity assessment bodies established in Austria.
EA directory entry for Akkreditierung AustriaRecognition
EA lists Akkreditierung Austria as an MLA signatory with scopes that include management system certification, product certification, certification of persons, inspection, calibration, testing and validation and verification.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Austria

FSSC 22000 certificates are issued by certification bodies licensed by the scheme owner, not by Sterling. FSSC says it monitors licensed bodies through its integrity programme and that the scheme is Global ACI approved. Check the licence and the body's accreditation, from Akkreditierung Austria or another accreditation body in the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), for the scheme and your food chain category. No body is named here. Edition and transition details: FSSC 22000 hub →

    Audit language

German is the official language of Austria and English is common in international groups and technology firms. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.

    Remote and on-site

Audits are on-site because they examine production hygiene and controls; the scheme rules govern any unannounced or remote element.

FSSC 22000 in Austria: questions clients ask

Is FSSC 22000 required by Austrian food law?

No. Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 requires food business operators to maintain permanent procedures based on the HACCP principles, with documents and records that show they work, but it does not require a third-party certificate. FSSC 22000 is a private scheme that customers ask for. Confirm legal duties with the competent food authority or your counsel.

What does FSSC say about its recognition and certification bodies?

FSSC states that its FSSC 22000 scheme holds Global Food Safety Initiative recognition and is Global ACI approved, and that it monitors its licensed certification bodies through an integrity programme. In practice that means the certificate must come from a licensed body, so check the licence as well as the accreditation before you appoint one.

Can an Austrian ISO 22000 holder move to FSSC 22000?

Yes, and the existing system is a solid base. FSSC 22000 builds on ISO 22000 with additional requirements and uses prerequisite programme standards for the food chain category, so the work is a gap analysis against the extras plus evidence of food defence and fraud assessment. A licensed certification body then audits.

Who certifies FSSC 22000 and who prepares the site?

A licensed and accredited certification body certifies; Sterling does not. Sterling prepares the food safety management system from the Frankfurt office, on-site where the work needs it, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included. It covers hazard analysis, prerequisite programmes, food defence, internal audit and readiness for the certification body's audit.
