ISO 42001 certification in Vietnam at a glance

Two Vietnamese instruments bear on ISO/IEC 42001. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Vietnam keep asking for the certificate?

Vietnam now regulates artificial intelligence by statute. The Law on Artificial Intelligence No. 134/2025/QH15, in force since 1 March 2026, applies to Vietnamese and foreign organisations taking part in AI activities in Vietnam; providers classify their systems by risk, notify the Ministry of Science and Technology of medium- and high-risk classifications, and high-risk systems must undergo conformity assessment. ISO/IEC 42001 is not cited in the law, yet its AI management system — AI policy, risk and impact assessment, data and model lifecycle controls, transparency, human oversight and supplier management — gives a provider or deployer an organised way to produce the documentation and controls the law expects. Software houses, fintechs and manufacturers deploying AI in the hi-tech parks are natural candidates. Certification is issued by a certification body; BoA does not list AI management systems among its IAF MLA programmes, so confirm the body's accreditation. Sterling's Ho Chi Minh City office leads the build, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included. Questions follow.

The need

Who needs ISO 42001 in Vietnam, and what happens without it

In Vietnam the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Providers of AI systems classified as medium or high riskMust notify MOST of the classification; high-risk systems need conformity assessment.
  • Software houses and AI developers in hi-tech parksIT and automation are priority fields of the parks.
  • Banks and fintechs deploying AI on customer dataAI law duties combine with personal data protection duties.

ISO 42001 requirements in Vietnam

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.

You know where AI is usedThe AI systems you develop, provide or use are identified, together with the role your organisation plays for each.
Leadership sets the rules for AITop management sets an AI policy and objectives, assigns accountability and provides resources for responsible use.
You assessed AI risks and impactsRisks from AI systems, and their impacts on individuals, groups and society, are assessed before and during use and then treated.
Each AI system is managed through its lifeDesign, data, testing, deployment, monitoring and retirement follow defined processes with records you can show.
Data and third parties are under controlThe quality and origin of data, and suppliers of models or components, are managed against your own requirements.
You monitor, audit and improveAI systems and the management system are monitored, audited internally and reviewed by management, with problems corrected.

In Vietnam these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

How Sterling gets a Vietnamese company certified

Time

How long does ISO 42001 certification take in Vietnam?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Vietnam these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of AI systems and their risk classification
  • Maturity of data and model lifecycle records
  • Number of provinces, industrial parks and sites in scope
  • Scheduling around the Tết break

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Vietnam?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Vietnam these factors move both.

  • Number of AI systems and business units in scope
  • Model monitoring and documentation tooling
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Translation of documents between Vietnamese and English where auditors or parent companies need both

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in Vietnam

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Vietnam are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 42001 in Vietnam (3)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Law on Artificial Intelligence No. 134/2025/QH15Expected in practice
Risk classification, notification of medium- and high-risk classifications to MOST, conformity assessment for high-risk systems; ISO/IEC 42001 is not named.
Law on Personal Data Protection No. 91/2025/QH15Expected in practice
Personal data used in AI processing remains subject to the law; does not cite any standard.
BoA (National Accreditation Bureau) — VICAS programmeMarket driver
BoA accredits management-system certification bodies under ISO/IEC 17021-1, but its published IAF MLA programme list does not include AI management systems; no mandate.

"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 42001 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 42001 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Vietnam

BoA's published IAF MLA programme list does not include AI management systems; confirm that the chosen certification body holds accreditation for this standard from BoA or from an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), and that the scope covers your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 42001 hub →

Audit language

Agree the audit language (Vietnamese or English) and the document language with the certification body at application.

Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 42001 in Vietnam: questions clients ask

Does Vietnam's Law on Artificial Intelligence require ISO/IEC 42001?

No. The Law on Artificial Intelligence classifies AI systems by risk, has providers notify the Ministry of Science and Technology of medium- and high-risk classifications and requires conformity assessment for high-risk systems, but it does not name ISO/IEC 42001. The standard helps organise the documentation and controls.

Is ISO/IEC 42001 certification the same as the law's conformity assessment for high-risk AI?

No. Conformity assessment under the law is a separate legal procedure, so an ISO/IEC 42001 certificate does not replace it. The certificate speaks to your management system; the assessment of a high-risk system follows the route the law sets. Ask the Ministry of Science and Technology or counsel how the two interact.

Is ISO/IEC 42001 certification accredited by BoA?

BoA's published IAF MLA programmes do not include AI management systems. Ask the certification body for its accreditation for ISO/IEC 42001 and who issued it, BoA or another member of the mutual recognition arrangements, and verify that the scope covers the sector you operate in.
