In short

ISO 27001 certification in the UK at a glance

Four UK instruments bear on ISO/IEC 27001. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in the UK keep asking for the certificate?

Outsourcing due diligence at UK banks and insurers now asks a pointed question: can the provider demonstrate certified adherence to recognised, relevant industry standards? That wording comes from the PRA's supervisory statement on outsourcing and third-party risk management, and ISO/IEC 27001 certification is a common way to answer it. The same information security management system supports other UK obligations: the UK GDPR's requirement for security appropriate to the risk, the NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit for anyone with access to NHS patient data, and the Cyber Essentials controls central government asks for on contracts handling personal information. None of these makes ISO/IEC 27001 compulsory, yet together they explain why buyers ask for it so often. Certification is granted by a certification body accredited by UKAS or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements. Sterling implements the ISMS from its London office, mapping those overlays into one control set, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.

The need

Who needs ISO 27001 in the UK, and what happens without it

In the UK the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Technology and outsourcing providers to UK banks and insurersPRA SS2/21 asks firms to consider whether providers can demonstrate certified adherence to recognised industry standards.
  • Health-tech and IT suppliers with access to NHS patient dataThey must complete the NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit; an ISMS gives the evidence base.
  • Suppliers on central government and NHS contracts handling personal informationPPN 014 sets Cyber Essentials as the baseline; buyers seeking more assurance ask for ISO/IEC 27001.
  • Any organisation processing personal data under the UK GDPRThe security principle requires measures appropriate to the risk; a certified ISMS evidences them.
  • Payment and e-money firms under FCA operational resilience rulesImportant business services depend on secure, resilient systems.

Requirements

ISO 27001 requirements in the UK

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27001 requires a company to prove six things about how it protects the information it holds.

You know what you are protectingThe scope is defined: the information, systems, locations and people that matter, and who inside and outside relies on them.
Management owns itTop management sets the information security policy and objectives, assigns roles and gives the effort the resources it needs.
You decided what could go wrong, and what to do about itSecurity risks are assessed against agreed criteria, and each is treated with a recorded choice of safeguards and the reasons for it.
The safeguards work every dayAccess, suppliers, devices, backups, incidents and staff awareness are managed as routine operations, not one-off projects.
You can show itPolicies, risk decisions and records are kept, so an auditor sees the system working in practice rather than on paper.
You check yourselvesSecurity performance is measured, internal audits and management reviews take place, and what they find is put right.

In the UK these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27001 explained →

How Sterling gets a UK company certified

How to get ISO 27001 certified in the UK

One team from the London office carries the work from scoping to certificate. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, on-site from London; remote delivery for distributed teams.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 27001 and the UK requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
  5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.

Time

How long does ISO 27001 certification take in the UK?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In the UK these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of UK sites and cloud environments in scope
  • Existing Cyber Essentials or DSPT evidence that can be reused
  • Evidence maturity (risk treatment, logs, internal audit, management review) before stage 2
  • Bank holiday calendars where sites span England, Scotland and Northern Ireland

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 27001 certification cost in the UK?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In the UK these factors move both.

  • Headcount, sites and complexity of the IT estate
  • Number of regulatory overlays mapped into the ISMS (PRA, FCA, DSPT, UK GDPR)
  • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
  • Technical remediation such as access control or logging tools

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 27001 consultants and certification bodies in the UK

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in the UK are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27001 in the UK (4)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
PRA Supervisory Statement SS2/21 Outsourcing and third party risk managementExpected in practice
Due diligence should consider whether providers can demonstrate certified adherence to recognised, relevant industry standards; no ISO standard named.
UK GDPR security principle (ICO guidance)Expected in practice
Appropriate technical and organisational measures; the ICO does not name ISO/IEC 27001.
NHS Data Security and Protection ToolkitExpected in practice
Mandatory self-assessment for organisations with access to NHS patient data; does not require ISO/IEC 27001.
PPN 014: Cyber Essentials scheme (Cabinet Office)Does not name the standard
Requires Cyber Essentials, Cyber Essentials Plus or equivalent controls for in-scope contracts.

"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 27001 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 27001 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in the UK

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by UKAS or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its UK accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27001 hub →

Audit language

English. Agree the audit language with the certification body at application; Welsh public body clients may set Welsh-language requirements.

Remote and on-site

Stage 1 is often remote; stage 2 normally includes on-site audit of the sites in scope, subject to the certification body's rules.

ISO 27001 in the UK: questions clients ask

Is ISO 27001 mandatory in the UK?

No. No law mandates certification, though several UK regimes create expectations. PRA SS2/21 asks banks and insurers to consider whether providers show certified adherence to recognised standards, naming none. The NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit is mandatory for those with NHS patient data access but does not require ISO/IEC 27001, and the ICO's UK GDPR security guidance does not name it either.

Do we need Cyber Essentials if we hold ISO 27001?

Possibly both, depending on the buyer. For in-scope central government and NHS contracts, PPN 014 asks suppliers for Cyber Essentials, Cyber Essentials Plus or equivalent controls. Many suppliers hold both certificates, since each answers a different buyer question. Whether your ISO/IEC 27001 certificate counts as equivalent is for the contracting authority to confirm.

Does ISO 27001 satisfy our banking clients' outsourcing due diligence?

It helps, but it does not close the question. Under PRA SS2/21, a provider's certificates and independent reports may help a firm gain assurance; the firm must still assess their adequacy rather than assume they suffice. Your banking client will still examine your scope, controls and exit arrangements for itself.

Which accreditation should our certification body have?

Pick a body accredited by UKAS, the UK's national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements. The scope on its accreditation schedule should cover ISO/IEC 27001 and your sector. We name no certification body unless its UK accreditation scope has been verified.
