In short

ISO 27701 certification in Sweden at a glance

In Sweden, ISO/IEC 27701 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Sweden gives data protection a short statutory frame: Lag (2018:218) supplements the GDPR, and Förordning (2018:219) names the Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten as supervisory authority and Swedac as the accreditor of GDPR certification bodies under Article 43. ISO/IEC 27701 sits beside that frame rather than inside it. It is a privacy information management standard that extends an information security system, and organisations use it to give customers and boards a structured, auditable picture of how personal data is handled. Because Swedac's published sub-area list does not name it, ask the certification body for its accreditation scope; certification is carried out by a body accredited by Swedac or another accreditation body within the international recognition arrangements, never by Sterling. Sterling's Enschede office extends an existing ISO/IEC 27001 system with privacy controls, records of processing and rights handling, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 27701 in Sweden, and what happens without it

In Sweden the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Controllers handling large volumes of personal dataA privacy information management system structures the records and controls that IMY would expect to see.
  • SaaS, cloud and outsourcing processorsCustomers ask processors for independent evidence of privacy controls beyond a contract clause.
  • Organisations with an ISO/IEC 27001 system in placeISO/IEC 27701 extends the existing system with privacy controls.
  • Providers considering formal GDPR certification laterFörordning (2018:219) sets up Swedac accreditation for Article 43 certification bodies.

Requirements

ISO 27701 requirements in Sweden

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27701 requires a company to prove six things about how it handles personal data.

You know whose data you hold and whyYou know what personal data you process, for which purposes and on what basis, and whether you act as controller, processor or both.
Privacy has an ownerManagement assigns responsibility for privacy and sets objectives, so everyone who handles personal data knows their role.
You assessed the privacy risksRisks to the people whose data you process are assessed and treated, including when new products and processes are designed.
People can exercise their rightsRequests to access, correct or delete data, and other individual rights, run through a defined and timely process.
Sharing and suppliers are controlledDisclosures, transfers and processors are governed by agreements and checks, so data is used only as agreed.
You can demonstrate itRecords of processing, notices and decisions are kept, and the privacy system is audited and reviewed like any management system.

In Sweden these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27701 explained →

How Sterling gets a Swedish company certified

How to get ISO 27701 certified in Sweden

One team from the Enschede office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients across Sweden are served from Sterling's Enschede office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 27701 and the Swedish requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
  5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

Time

How long does ISO 27701 certification take in Sweden?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Sweden these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Existing ISO/IEC 27001 system and its scope
  • Records of processing and processor contracts
  • Rights handling and breach procedures
  • Internal audit and management review evidence

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 27701 certification cost in Sweden?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Sweden these factors move both.

  • Number of processing activities and systems in scope
  • Controller versus processor role
  • Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Integration with ISO/IEC 27001

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 27701 consultants and certification bodies in Sweden

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27701 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Sweden are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27701 in Sweden (3)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR) and Lag (2018:218)Related
ISO/IEC 27701 is not named; it helps to organise and evidence the controller's and processor's duties.
    Förordning (2018:219), 3 § and 4 §Related
IMY is the supervisory authority, and Swedac accredits certification bodies under Article 43 of the GDPR.
Swedac — accreditation scope for management-system certificationAccreditation
Swedac's published list of management-system sub-areas does not name ISO/IEC 27701, so the certification body's accreditation scope should be checked.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Sweden

ISO/IEC 27701 certification is carried out by a certification body accredited by Swedac or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). It is an optional benchmark, not a GDPR certificate, and Swedac's published sub-area list does not name it, so ask the body how its competence is covered. Audit language

Audits can be held in Swedish or English; agree the language with the certification body at application.

    Remote and on-site

Document review can be remote; sites and processing environments are normally visited on-site.

ISO 27701 in Sweden: questions clients ask

Is ISO 27701 a GDPR certificate?

No. ISO/IEC 27701 is a management system standard for privacy information, and it is not named in the GDPR or in Lag (2018:218). Certification can show customers a structured privacy programme, but it does not prove legal compliance. Förordning (2018:219) separately gives Swedac the task of accrediting certification bodies under Article 43.

Who supervises privacy compliance for a company with ISO 27701 in Sweden?

IMY remains the supervisory authority regardless of any certificate. Förordning (2018:219) names Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten as supervisor under the GDPR and Lag (2018:218), so a certificate does not shift responsibility. It can help you evidence your controls if IMY asks, but it never replaces answering to the authority.

Is ISO 27701 on Swedac's list of accredited sub-areas?

No. Swedac's published sub-areas include information security under ISO 27001 but do not mention ISO/IEC 27701 for privacy. Certification remains possible; ask the body to show the accreditation scope under which it assesses privacy information management, and how the accreditation arrangements recognise it.

Do I need ISO 27001 before ISO 27701?

They are designed to work together. ISO/IEC 27701 extends an information security management system with privacy requirements, so organisations that already hold ISO/IEC 27001 add less, and others implement both in one programme. A scoping review shows which route fits, and your certification body will confirm what it needs to see.
