In short

ISO 22000 certification in Qatar at a glance

In Qatar, ISO 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Food businesses selling to Qatari retailers, hotel groups and institutional kitchens meet the same question again and again: can you show a documented system for food safety? ISO 22000 answers it with a management system built around hazard analysis, prerequisite programmes, communication along the chain and continual improvement. Demand is commercial and export driven, with logistics and trading tenants at Ras Bufontas and Umm Alhoul adding handling questions of their own. Look for a certification body accredited within the Global ACI arrangements, and note that the GCC Accreditation Centre (GAC) serves Qatar. Sterling's consultants work through scope, hazard analysis, prerequisite programmes, traceability, supplier control, emergency response and internal audit alongside your teams, delivering from the Dubai office with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.

The need

Who needs ISO 22000 in Qatar, and what happens without it

In Qatar the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Food manufacturers and processorsRetail and hospitality buyers ask for a certified food safety management system; no Qatari mandate was verified.
  • Food packaging and ingredient suppliersCustomers extend their requirements through the supply chain.
  • Catering and central-kitchen operatorsA management system standard organises HACCP, prerequisites and communication in one framework.
  • Cold-chain and food logistics operators in the free zonesUmm Alhoul and Ras Bufontas host logistics and trading businesses.

ISO 22000 requirements in Qatar

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22000 requires a company to prove six things about keeping food safe from supplier to customer.

The basics of hygiene are in placePrerequisite programmes cover premises, cleaning, pest control, personal hygiene, water, maintenance and supplier approval.
You analysed the hazardsBiological, chemical and physical hazards are identified for each product and process step, and the controls needed are decided.
Critical controls are monitoredControl measures are validated, monitored and acted on when limits are breached, following HACCP principles.
Unsafe product does not leaveTraceability, handling of potentially unsafe product, withdrawal and recall are planned and tested.
Food safety information flows along the chainInformation is exchanged with suppliers, customers, authorities and your own staff so hazards are not missed.
Leadership reviews and improvesManagement sets food safety policy and objectives, the system is verified and audited, and it is updated as risks change.

In Qatar these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22000 explained →

How Sterling gets a Qatari company certified

Time

How long does ISO 22000 certification take in Qatar?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Qatar these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Maturity of prerequisite programmes
  • Hazard analysis and operational control evidence
  • Communication records with suppliers and customers
  • Certification body scheduling around Ramadan and Eid

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 22000 certification cost in Qatar?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Qatar these factors move both.

  • Number of sites and product categories
  • Facility and equipment upgrades
  • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
  • Testing and monitoring needs

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Qatar

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Qatar are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
GCC Accreditation Centre (GAC) — regional accreditation centre listed by ILAC as serving QatarAccreditation

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Qatar

Use a certification body accredited for ISO 22000 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements now run by Global ACI (Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated). The GCC Accreditation Centre (GAC) serves Qatar, as ILAC lists it; check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its Qatar accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 22000 hub →

Audit language

Agree the audit and document language with the certification body at application; Arabic and English are both used in the market, and a regulator or government buyer may set its own language requirement.

Remote and on-site

Food production and storage sites are audited on-site; some document review may be remote at the certification body's discretion.

ISO 22000 in Qatar: questions clients ask

Is ISO 22000 a legal requirement in Qatar?

Customers usually drive it. Retailers, hotel groups and export buyers ask suppliers to evidence food safety control. Your competent food authority sets its own inspection rules, which stand apart from any certificate you hold, so confirm with it what applies to your business.

When should a Qatari producer choose ISO 22000 rather than FSSC 22000?

When customers accept a food safety management system certificate without asking for the additional scheme requirements. FSSC 22000 is built on the ISO 22000 type of system and is named in some supplier terms. Ask your largest customers which they recognise before deciding.

Which accreditation should the certification body hold?

Accreditation for food safety management systems is what to look for, granted by a body within the Global ACI mutual recognition arrangements. The GCC Accreditation Centre (GAC) serves Qatar according to ILAC. Request the accreditation scope document and read the food categories it lists before you choose.

Does the ISO 22000 system replace HACCP?

No, it contains it. HACCP stays at the centre, and the management system wraps structure around the hazard analysis: leadership commitment, communication along the chain, prerequisite programmes, traceability, emergency response, verification and improvement. A site with a working HACCP plan therefore has less to build than one starting cold.
