FSSC 22000 certification in Qatar at a glance
In Qatar, FSSC 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Retail chains, hotel groups and multinational buyers supplying the Qatari market ask food businesses for more than a clean inspection report, and FSSC 22000 is one of the schemes they name. Buyers set the pace here: supplier approval forms, export plans and the step up from HACCP. The free zones at Ras Bufontas and Umm Alhoul host trading and logistics operators handling food flows, and manufacturers and packaging suppliers feed the same chains. Certification bodies must meet the scheme owner's conditions and be accredited within the Global ACI arrangements, and the GCC Accreditation Centre (GAC) serves Qatar; check the scope covers food safety. Sterling helps sites build prerequisite programmes, hazard analysis, food defence and fraud assessments, allergen and traceability controls and internal audit, working from Sterling's Dubai office with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.
Who needs FSSC 22000 in Qatar, and what happens without it
In Qatar the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Food and beverage manufacturers supplying retail chainsRetailers and multinational buyers often name a GFSI-recognised scheme in supplier terms; no Qatari mandate was found.
- Packaging and ingredient suppliers to food producersCustomers extend their scheme requirements to inputs.
- Hospitality and catering producers with central kitchensScale and export plans push a move from HACCP to a full scheme.
- Free-zone food traders and re-exportersRas Bufontas and Umm Alhoul host logistics and trading businesses handling food flows.

Strip away the vocabulary and FSSC 22000 asks a company to prove six things about food safety to the level global buyers expect.
In Qatar these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: FSSC 22000 explained →

How long does FSSC 22000 certification take in Qatar?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Qatar these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Prerequisite programme maturity and environmental monitoring records
- Food defence and fraud vulnerability assessments
- Allergen and traceability testing before the audit
- Certification body scheduling around Ramadan and Eid production peaks
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does FSSC 22000 certification cost in Qatar?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Qatar these factors move both.
- Number of sites and product categories in scope
- Facility upgrades needed to meet prerequisite programmes
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
- Laboratory testing and calibration needs
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
FSSC 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Qatar
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers FSSC 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Qatar are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Qatar
Use a certification body accredited for FSSC 22000 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements now run by Global ACI (Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its Qatar accreditation scope has been verified. The scheme owner sets which certification bodies may issue FSSC 22000 certificates, so confirm eligibility with the scheme and the customer. The GCC Accreditation Centre (GAC) serves Qatar, as ILAC lists it; check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. Edition and transition details: FSSC 22000 hub →
Audit language
Agree the audit and document language with the certification body at application; Arabic and English are both used in the market, and a regulator or government buyer may set its own language requirement.
Remote and on-site
Production sites are visited on-site because hygiene and process control must be observed; some audit elements may be remote where the scheme permits.
FSSC 22000 in Qatar: questions clients ask
Is FSSC 22000 required by Qatari law?
Customers rather than a scheme-specific law usually drive it. Retailers, multinational buyers and export markets name a recognised food safety scheme in their supplier terms. Read your customer agreements first, and ask the competent food authority what it expects of your business before assuming a legal duty.
How does FSSC 22000 relate to ISO 22000 and HACCP?
FSSC 22000 builds on a food safety management system of the ISO 22000 type and adds scheme-specific requirements, while HACCP is the hazard analysis method at the centre of both. A site with a sound HACCP plan has a head start, but the scheme still requires more evidence.
Who may certify a Qatar plant to FSSC 22000?
Only certification bodies that meet the scheme owner's conditions, and those need accreditation too. Accreditation should come from a body within the Global ACI arrangements, with the GCC Accreditation Centre (GAC) serving Qatar, but eligibility to issue this particular certificate is a scheme matter. Ask the body for evidence of both before you engage it.
Will Sterling inspect our plant before the audit?
Sterling can run a readiness visit on-site where the work needs it, from its Dubai office, with remote support for records review. It does not certify: the accredited body does. Effivity and Sterling Academy are included with the engagement. A visit is most useful once prerequisite programmes and records have been running for a while.
