In short

ISO 27001 certification in Mexico at a glance

One Mexican instrument bears on ISO/IEC 27001. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Mexico keep asking for the certificate?

When a Mexican bank, a hospital group or an overseas customer asks a supplier how it protects information, ISO 27001 is the answer most often accepted. The 2025 data protection law requires administrative, technical and physical security measures scaled to risk and tells the Secretaría Anticorrupción y Buen Gobierno to publish international security standards and good practices, without naming any standard. Bank outsourcing rules let the CNBV inspect a bank's service providers, which keeps technology suppliers alert. For the certificate, the Entidad Mexicana de Acreditación is shown by Global ACI as recognised for ISO/IEC 27001 from August 2017, so confirm the certification body's accreditation scope and your customer's acceptance. Sterling's New York office helps BPOs, fintechs and manufacturers scope the system, run risk assessment and internal audit and close control gaps, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included. Certification comes from the accredited body.

The need

Who needs ISO 27001 in Mexico, and what happens without it

In Mexico the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Banks, fintechs and their technology suppliersBanking law lets the CNBV inspect or order audits of the service providers a bank uses, and fintech rules give the CNBV power over information security provisions, so structured controls matter to suppliers.
  • BPO, contact-centre and software-services firms serving overseas clientsOverseas customers routinely ask outsourced providers for an independently certified information security management system.
  • Companies holding customer, employee or health dataThe data protection law requires administrative, technical and physical security measures scaled to risk and the sensitivity of the data.
  • Medical device, pharmaceutical and automotive firms with connected productsCustomers and partners ask for evidence that design data and product information are protected.
  • Suppliers to public bodiesTender notices set their own security evidence requirements, and a certificate can support a bid.

Requirements

ISO 27001 requirements in Mexico

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27001 requires a company to prove six things about how it protects the information it holds.

You know what you are protectingThe scope is defined: the information, systems, locations and people that matter, and who inside and outside relies on them.
Management owns itTop management sets the information security policy and objectives, assigns roles and gives the effort the resources it needs.
You decided what could go wrong, and what to do about itSecurity risks are assessed against agreed criteria, and each is treated with a recorded choice of safeguards and the reasons for it.
The safeguards work every dayAccess, suppliers, devices, backups, incidents and staff awareness are managed as routine operations, not one-off projects.
You can show itPolicies, risk decisions and records are kept, so an auditor sees the system working in practice rather than on paper.
You check yourselvesSecurity performance is measured, internal audits and management reviews take place, and what they find is put right.

In Mexico these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27001 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 27001 certification take in Mexico?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Mexico these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Scope boundary: sites, systems and cloud services
  • Maturity of asset, access, logging and supplier controls
  • Time to produce risk assessment, internal audit and management review evidence
  • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 27001 certification cost in Mexico?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Mexico these factors move both.

  • Number of sites, systems and people in scope
  • Remediation of technical controls such as logging, encryption and access management
  • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
  • Penetration testing and tooling

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 27001 consultants and certification bodies in Mexico

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Mexico are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27001 in Mexico (3)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Federal Law on the Protection of Personal Data Held by Private Parties (2025) — security dutyDoes not name the standard
Requires administrative, technical and physical security measures proportionate to the risk, the consequences for data subjects, the sensitivity of the data and technological development, and tells the Secretaría to publish international information-security standards and good practices.
Ley de Instituciones de Crédito — outsourcing and the Fintech LawContext
The CNBV may inspect a bank's service providers or order audits of them, and the fintech law has the CNBV issue provisions on information security and operational continuity; read the current CNBV provisions for the expectations on your licence.
Entidad Mexicana de Acreditación (EMA) recognition entries on Global ACIAccreditation
Global ACI shows EMA recognised for ISO/IEC 27001 certification from 11 August 2017, so an accredited Mexican certificate sits within the international arrangements; this is a market signal, not a mandate.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Mexico

Use a certification body accredited for ISO/IEC 27001 by the Entidad Mexicana de Acreditación (EMA) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. Global ACI lists EMA's ISO/IEC 27001 recognition from 11 August 2017. The accredited certification body decides, not Sterling. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27001 hub →

Audit language

Spanish is the usual language of Mexican law, tenders and regulatory filings, while audits for exporters and multinationals often run in English or in both languages; agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; offices, data centres and operations rooms in scope are normally visited, while cloud and remote-work walkthroughs can often be done remotely.

ISO 27001 in Mexico: questions clients ask

Does the Mexican data protection law require ISO 27001?

No. The 2025 law requires administrative, technical and physical security measures scaled to risk, the sensitivity of the data and technological development, and it names no ISO standard. ISO 27001 is one structured way to run and evidence those measures. Ask your counsel or the Secretaría how your safeguards measure up.

Is an ISO 27001 certificate available from Mexican accredited bodies?

Yes. Global ACI lists the Entidad Mexicana de Acreditación as recognised for ISO/IEC 27001 certification since August 2017, and its own site lists information security among its mutual recognition scopes. Bodies accredited by other members of the arrangements may also serve you. Ask for the accreditation certificate and scope.

Do bank regulators make ISO 27001 mandatory for suppliers in Mexico?

Not by name. Banking law lets the CNBV inspect a bank's service providers or order audits of them, and the fintech law has the CNBV and Banco de México issue provisions on information security and continuity. Check the current CNBV provisions and your bank's contract; an ISO certificate would not by itself demonstrate compliance.

Can a Mexican BPO use ISO 27001 for overseas clients?

Yes, and many do, because overseas customers often ask outsourced providers for an independently certified system. The certificate comes from an accredited certification body, and audits can run in English or Spanish as agreed with the body at application. Check which accreditation your customer accepts before choosing the body.
