ISO 27701 certification in Mexico at a glance
Ley Federal de Protección de Datos Personales en Posesión de los Particulares (2025) refers to ISO/IEC 27701, yet none of the Mexican instruments checked makes it compulsory. Buyers in Mexico ask for it anyway.
Mexico's new private-sector data protection law requires companies to do several things that ISO/IEC 27701 organises in one management system: a privacy notice with listed contents, consent that is express and in writing for sensitive data, security safeguards, request handling for access, rectification, cancellation and objection, and rules for transfers. The law names no standard and creates no certificate, though it lets parties agree binding self-regulation schemes with trust seals. A 27701 certificate is a separate private route. Accreditation needs care, because Global ACI's entry for the Entidad Mexicana de Acreditación does not list the standard, so ask any certification body which accreditation backs its certificate. Sterling's New York office helps BPOs, financial firms, healthcare organisations and groups map data, rewrite notices, set up request handling and prepare for certification, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included. The certificate comes from the accredited body, not Sterling.
Who needs ISO 27701 in Mexico, and what happens without it
In Mexico the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Companies that handle personal data of customers or employees at scaleThe 2025 law sets privacy notice, consent, request-handling and transfer duties, and a privacy information management system gives a repeatable way to run them.
- BPO, contact-centre and software firms processing personal data for overseas clientsThey are asked by customers to show structured privacy controls beyond a security certificate.
- Banks, insurers and fintechsFinancial data needs express consent under the law, and sector regulators add their own expectations.
- Healthcare, laboratory and medical device organisationsHealth data is sensitive under the law and needs express written consent unless a listed exception applies.
- Multinational groups with shared data platformsTransfers between affiliates and to providers abroad need documented arrangements.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27701 requires a company to prove six things about how it handles personal data.
In Mexico these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27701 explained →

How long does ISO 27701 certification take in Mexico?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Mexico these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Data mapping across processing activities, systems and processors
- Privacy notices, consent records and request-handling evidence
- Existing ISO/IEC 27001 maturity
- Certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 27701 certification cost in Mexico?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Mexico these factors move both.
- Number of processing activities, sites and processors in scope
- Remediation of notices, consent flows and request handling
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
- Security upgrades that the privacy controls depend on
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 27701 consultants and certification bodies in Mexico
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27701 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Mexico are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|

| Self-regulation schemes under the law | Regulator scheme Parties may agree binding self-regulation such as codes of conduct and trust seals that include effectiveness measures and corrective measures and are notified to the authorities; an ISO/IEC 27701 certificate is a different, private route. |

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Mexico
Use a certification body accredited for ISO/IEC 27701 (normally alongside ISO/IEC 27001) by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Global ACI's entry for the Entidad Mexicana de Acreditación does not list ISO/IEC 27701, so ask each body which accreditation backs the certificate and whether your customer or regulator accepts it. The certificate does not show compliance with the Mexican law. The certification body decides, not Sterling. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27701 hub →
Audit language
Spanish is the usual language of Mexican law, tenders and regulatory filings, while audits for exporters and multinationals often run in English or in both languages; agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; offices, data centres and operations rooms in scope are normally visited, and privacy records and notices can be reviewed remotely.
ISO 27701 in Mexico: questions clients ask
Does ISO 27701 show compliance with the Mexican data protection law?
No. The 2025 law names no ISO standard and creates no certificate of compliance, and an ISO/IEC 27701 certificate is a private certification of a management system. It can organise the evidence behind your answers to notices, consent, requests and transfers. Confirm legal compliance with your counsel or the Secretaría Anticorrupción y Buen Gobierno.
Is the self-regulation trust seal the same as ISO 27701?
No. The law lets parties agree binding self-regulation schemes, such as codes of conduct or trust seals, with ways to measure effectiveness and corrective measures, and requires them to be notified to the authorities. An ISO/IEC 27701 certificate is a different, private route issued by an accredited certification body. You could pursue either or both.
Which accreditation backs an ISO 27701 certificate in Mexico?
For ISO/IEC 27701 there is no Global ACI entry under the Entidad Mexicana de Acreditación. Certification bodies accredited by other members of the arrangements may issue it, usually together with ISO/IEC 27001. Ask each for its accreditation certificate and scope, and check that your customer accepts it.
Do I need ISO 27001 before ISO 27701?
ISO/IEC 27701 extends an information security management system, so most certification bodies expect it to sit on top of ISO/IEC 27001 or be assessed together. Existing 27001 maturity is a main driver of the timeline. Ask the body in writing what it requires before you plan the sequence.
