FSSC 22000 certification in Maldives at a glance
One Maldivian instrument bears on FSSC 22000. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Maldives keep asking for the certificate?
Global retail buyers of Maldivian tuna rarely stop at a hazard analysis; many list FSSC 22000 among the food safety certificates they accept. Foundation FSSC owns the scheme, which builds on ISO 22000 with sector prerequisite programmes and its own additional requirements, and only certification bodies it licenses can issue certificates. At home, producers already register premises and hold a licence from the Maldives Food and Drug Authority under the Food Safety Act, Law No. 6/2024, which gives a sound starting point. The step up involves environmental monitoring, food defence and fraud controls, allergen management and readiness for unannounced audits. Sterling's Mumbai office runs the gap assessment against the scheme, prepares the plant for the licensed body's audit and uses Effivity to hold the evidence. Sterling does not certify; the licensed and accredited certification body decides.
Who needs FSSC 22000 in Maldives, and what happens without it
In Maldives the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Tuna processors and canneries selling to international retailersRetail buyers often ask for a scheme benchmarked by the Global Food Safety Initiative, and FSSC 22000 is one such scheme.
- Food and beverage manufacturers with export ambitionsProducers already registered and licensed by the MFDA can build on that discipline to reach scheme certification.
- Packaging and ingredient suppliers to food processorsTheir customers flow food safety requirements down the supply chain.

Strip away the vocabulary and FSSC 22000 asks a company to prove six things about food safety to the level global buyers expect.
In Maldives these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: FSSC 22000 explained →

How long does FSSC 22000 certification take in Maldives?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Maldives these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Gap between current controls and the scheme's additional requirements
- Prerequisite programme upgrades for the relevant food chain category
- Scheduling of the scheme's unannounced audits
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does FSSC 22000 certification cost in Maldives?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Maldives these factors move both.
- Number of sites and food chain categories
- Infrastructure and hygiene upgrades
- Environmental monitoring and laboratory testing
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
FSSC 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Maldives
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers FSSC 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Maldives are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Maldives
FSSC 22000 certificates are issued only by certification bodies licensed by Foundation FSSC and accredited for the scheme by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Check both the licence and the accreditation scope, and confirm with your buyer that it accepts the certificate. Edition and transition details: FSSC 22000 hub →
Audit language
Dhivehi is the national language and Acts are published in it, while regulator websites and many Gazette bid notices are in English; audits commonly run in English with interviews in Dhivehi where staff prefer it. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Scheme rules set how much of the audit can be remote; production areas are always audited on-site, and the scheme includes unannounced audits.
FSSC 22000 in Maldives: questions clients ask
How does FSSC 22000 differ from ISO 22000 for a Maldivian exporter?
FSSC 22000 includes ISO 22000 and adds sector prerequisite programmes and Foundation FSSC's own requirements, under a scheme the foundation owns and controls. Many retail buyers accept FSSC 22000 where they would not accept ISO 22000 alone, so ask each buyer which certificate it lists before you commit.
Which certification bodies can issue FSSC 22000 certificates?
Only bodies licensed by Foundation FSSC and accredited for the scheme. Check both the licence and the accreditation scope for your food chain category, and confirm the buyer accepts the result. Sterling prepares the site and the system, and the licensed body carries out the audits and issues the certificate.
Does the MFDA require FSSC 22000?
No. The Food Safety Act requires food producers to register their premises with the Maldives Food and Drug Authority and hold a licence, and it names no certification scheme. FSSC 22000 is a buyer-driven choice made on top of those legal duties. Raise any licensing question with the Authority directly.
What adds most time to FSSC 22000 in a fish plant?
Closing the gap to the scheme's additional requirements and upgrading prerequisite programmes. Environmental monitoring, allergen and foreign-body controls and food defence all need to work before the audit, and the scheme's unannounced audits must be planned for. Hygiene or layout changes found early can add both time and cost.
