ISO 27001 certification in Kenya at a glance
CBK draft Risk Management Guidelines (September 2026) refers to ISO/IEC 27001, yet none of the Kenyan instruments checked makes it compulsory. Buyers in Kenya ask for it anyway.
Kenyan regulators rarely write ISO/IEC 27001 into a rulebook, yet the security expectations around it are specific. The Central Bank of Kenya's Guidance Note on Cybersecurity applies to institutions licensed under the Banking Act and names no ISO standard, while its September 2026 draft risk guidelines cite ISO 27001 as one example of best practice. Payment service providers must give the Central Bank a system security audit report each year under the National Payment System Regulations, 2014, and owners of critical information infrastructure answer to NC4 under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018. The Kenya Accreditation Service lists information security management systems as a sub-scope of its African Accreditation Cooperation certificate, which is the accreditation to check. Certificates come from accredited certification bodies, never from Sterling. Sterling's Nairobi office builds the management system with Effivity and Sterling Academy included, using 20+ years of practice.
Who needs ISO 27001 in Kenya, and what happens without it
In Kenya the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Banks and other Banking Act institutions and their suppliersThe CBK's cybersecurity guidance note sets minimum requirements for licensed institutions, and suppliers are asked how they meet equivalent controls.
- Payment service providers, mobile money and fintech firmsEach year the payment regulations ask for a system security audit report on payment services, and an ISMS gives the controls that report examines.
- Owners of critical information infrastructureNC4 formulates codes of practice and reviews compliance and audit reports for designated infrastructure, so owners need a demonstrable security programme.
- BPO, ICT and software companies with overseas customersOverseas customers ask outsourced service providers for independent evidence of an information security management system.
- Controllers and processors handling large volumes of personal dataThe Data Protection Act requires appropriate technical and organisational measures, and ISO/IEC 27001 is a recognised way to organise them.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27001 requires a company to prove six things about how it protects the information it holds.
In Kenya these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27001 explained →

How long does ISO 27001 certification take in Kenya?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Kenya these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Scope: number of sites, data centres, cloud services and teams
- Maturity of the risk assessment and Statement of Applicability
- Existing controls from CBK guidance, NC4 codes or customer security requirements
- Certification body scheduling and any buyer-specific audit conditions
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 27001 certification cost in Kenya?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Kenya these factors move both.
- Headcount and number of sites in scope
- Number of systems, applications and outsourced suppliers
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Penetration testing, monitoring tools and remediation work
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 27001 consultants and certification bodies in Kenya
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Kenya are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Kenya
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by the Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. KENAS's AFRAC certificate lists information security management systems as a sub-scope from 19 December 2024, so ask each body which accreditation backs its ISO/IEC 27001 certificates and confirm that your regulator or customer accepts it. An annual audit report that the CBK asks of a payment service provider is a separate, regulator-facing report and is not an ISO certificate. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27001 hub →
Audit language
Kiswahili and English are the official languages and English is the usual language of business records, standards and tenders; interviews on the shop floor or with suppliers may run in Kiswahili or another local language. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Stage audits cover the management system and the sites, data centres and teams in scope; document review and interviews can be remote at the certification body's discretion, while operations rooms and data centres are normally visited.
ISO 27001 in Kenya: questions clients ask
Is ISO 27001 mandatory for banks in Kenya?
The CBK's Guidance Note on Cybersecurity applies to institutions licensed under the Banking Act and sets minimum requirements on governance, independent testing, outsourcing and training, but it names no ISO standard, so ISO 27001 is not stated as mandatory there. Banks should confirm current requirements with the CBK.
Do the CBK's draft risk guidelines mention ISO 27001?
Yes, as an example. The September 2026 draft Risk Management Guidelines list ISO 27001 among frameworks, with NIST, CIS Critical Controls, COBIT, PCI-DSS and OWASP, against which information security policies should align. They are published for public comment and take effect only when issued, so watch for the final text.
Is the payment regulations' security audit an ISO 27001 certificate?
No. The National Payment System Regulations, 2014 ask a payment service provider for a yearly system security audit report from a reputable independent audit firm, and they name no standard. An ISO/IEC 27001 certificate comes from an accredited certification body. Ask the CBK what evidence it accepts for the report.
Which accreditation should an ISO 27001 certification body hold in Kenya?
KENAS's AFRAC certificate lists information security management systems, ISO/IEC 27001 with ISO/IEC 27006-1, as a sub-scope from 19 December 2024. A body accredited within the international mutual recognition arrangements is another route. Ask the body for its certificate and scope, then check that your regulator or customer accepts it.
