Two Indonesian instruments bear on ISO/IEC 27701. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Indonesia keep asking for the certificate?
Privacy certification has a clear legal anchor in Indonesia. Undang-Undang Nomor 27 Tahun 2022 tentang Pelindungan Data Pribadi obliges controllers to apply technical and operational measures to protect personal data, to assess the impact of high-risk processing and, where they serve the public or process at scale, to appoint a data protection officer — yet the law offers no certificate of its own. ISO/IEC 27701 fills that gap for organisations that want an independent benchmark. It extends an ISO/IEC 27001 information security management system, which many Indonesian operators already run because BSSN's regulation points them to SNI ISO/IEC 27001, with controls for controllers and processors: records of processing, lawful basis, data subject rights, privacy by design and processor contracts. Certification is granted by an accredited certification body together with, or as an extension of, ISO/IEC 27001. How long does ISO 27701 certification take in Indonesia?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Indonesia these are the factors that set the timeline.

ISO 27701 consultants and certification bodies in Indonesia
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 27701 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 27701 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Indonesia
Use a certification body accredited for this standard by Komite Akreditasi Nasional (KAN) or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. Audits are conducted in Bahasa Indonesia or English; agree the audit and document language with the certification body at application.

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.
ISO 27701 in Indonesia: questions clients ask
Does ISO 27701 certification prove UU PDP compliance?
No. ISO 27701 is an external benchmark of privacy management, and UU PDP has no certificate that proves compliance. The law's obligations are judged on their own terms, so certification supports your records without replacing them. Confirm questions of compliance with your counsel.
Do we need ISO 27001 first?
In practice yes, because ISO 27701 extends an ISO/IEC 27001 information security management system to privacy. Check that the certification body will accept your existing certificate and scope, so the privacy extension attaches cleanly. It is also worth confirming this with the body you choose.
Does UU PDP require a data protection officer?
It depends on what you process. UU PDP requires a data protection officer for public-service processing, for large-scale systematic monitoring, and for large-scale processing of specific data or criminal records. Confirm whether your activities fall into those groups with your counsel.
