ISO 22301 certification in Indonesia at a glance
One Indonesian instrument bears on ISO 22301. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Indonesia keep asking for the certificate?
When a payment platform, data centre or core banking system in Indonesia goes down, the question regulators and customers ask is not whether the outage happened but whether recovery was planned. BSSN's regulation on electronic system security already weighs process criticality and the impact of system failure when it places a system in the strategic, high or low category, and banks answer to OJK for the continuity of the IT services they rely on. ISO 22301 turns those expectations into a management system: business impact analysis, risk assessment, continuity strategies, documented plans and, above all, exercises that prove the plans work. Certification is granted by a certification body accredited for the standard, by Komite Akreditasi Nasional (KAN) or another recognised body; Sterling does not certify. Sterling's Jakarta office builds and exercises the system with clients, frequently integrated with ISO/IEC 27001. Local questions follow.
Who needs ISO 22301 in Indonesia, and what happens without it
In Indonesia the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Operators of strategic and high-risk electronic systemsBSSN's categorisation weighs process criticality and the impact of system failure.
- Data-centre and digital infrastructure providersCustomers require tested recovery capability.
- Manufacturers with export supply commitmentsCustomers ask how supply continues after disruption.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22301 requires a company to prove six things about how it keeps operating when something goes wrong.
In Indonesia these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22301 explained →

How long does ISO 22301 certification take in Indonesia?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Indonesia these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of critical activities and sites
- Business impact analysis and risk assessment effort
- Exercises completed before the audit
- Certification body scheduling around Ramadan, Idul Fitri and cuti bersama
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 22301 certification cost in Indonesia?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Indonesia these factors move both.
- Number of sites and critical activities
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Recovery infrastructure gaps found
- Integration with ISO/IEC 27001
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 22301 consultants and certification bodies in Indonesia
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22301 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Indonesia are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 22301 in Indonesia (1)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Peraturan BSSN Nomor 8 Tahun 2020 — electronic system categorisation criteria | Expected in practice Categorisation criteria include process criticality and the impact of system failure; ISO 22301 is not cited. |
"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO 22301 covers without naming a standard, and ISO 22301 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Indonesia
Use a certification body accredited for this standard by Komite Akreditasi Nasional (KAN) or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation for Indonesia has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 22301 hub →
Audit language
Audits are conducted in Bahasa Indonesia or English; agree the audit and document language with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.
ISO 22301 in Indonesia: questions clients ask
Is ISO 22301 mandatory in Indonesia?
No legal mandate was verified for Indonesia. Interest is driven by financial regulators' continuity expectations and by customer requirements, so look at what your own regulator or buyers ask for. Confirm any binding duty with your counsel or regulator. Keep a record of the expectations you find, as it helps justify the scope you later choose.
Does BSSN's regulation require business continuity?
Not by name. BSSN Regulation 8 of 2020 sets categorisation criteria that include process criticality and the impact of system failure, and those shape an electronic system's category. ISO 22301 is not cited, so use it as a way to meet those expectations.
Who issues the certificate?
A certification body issues the ISO 22301 certificate, not the regulator. Select one that Komite Akreditasi Nasional (KAN) or another IAF MLA-covered accreditation body has accredited, and make sure the scope extends to business continuity. No body is endorsed here.
