In short

ISO 17025 accreditation in Indonesia at a glance

Peraturan BSN Nomor 7 Tahun 2024 is the instrument itself: it applies to the organisations within its scope, and buyers and partners in Indonesia ask for evidence that you meet it.

Komite Akreditasi Nasional (KAN), Indonesia's national accreditation body, holds ILAC MRA signatory status for calibration and testing under ISO/IEC 17025, as well as for medical testing, inspection and proficiency testing providers. That recognition is what lets a report from a KAN-accredited laboratory in Jakarta, Surabaya or Batam be accepted by customers and regulators in other ILAC economies. National regulation defines KAN as the body responsible for accrediting conformity assessment bodies, so for most Indonesian laboratories it is the natural route. Accreditation is not a certificate a consultant can arrange: KAN's assessors examine competence, impartiality, method validation, measurement uncertainty, traceability and proficiency testing, and witness the work itself. Sterling prepares laboratories from its Jakarta office — the quality manual and procedures, uncertainty budgets, validation records, internal audits and management review that assessors expect — with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included in the engagement. The local route and the questions laboratories raise most are set out below.

The need

Who needs ISO 17025 in Indonesia, and what happens without it

In Indonesia the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Testing laboratories seeking national accreditationKAN accredits testing laboratories to ISO/IEC 17025 and is an ILAC MRA signatory for testing.
  • Calibration laboratoriesKAN's ILAC MRA scope covers calibration.
  • Industrial, food and mining laboratories serving export customersCustomers and regulators rely on accredited test reports recognised under ILAC.

Requirements

ISO 17025 requirements in Indonesia

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.

You are impartialCommercial, financial or other pressures do not influence results, and risks to impartiality are identified and managed.
Staff are competent and authorisedEach person who performs, reviews or reports work is qualified, trained, monitored and authorised for those tasks.
Equipment is calibrated and traceableEquipment is fit for purpose and calibrated, with measurement results traceable to recognised references.
Methods are validated or verifiedMethods suit the work, are validated where needed or verified before use, and measurement uncertainty is evaluated.
Results are checked and reported properlyQuality control and proficiency testing confirm validity, and reports state results clearly, accurately and without ambiguity.
The management system worksComplaints, nonconforming work, risks, internal audits and management review run under a documented management system.

In Indonesia these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in Indonesia?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Indonesia these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of tests or calibrations in the requested scope
  • Availability of method validation and uncertainty data
  • Proficiency testing results available before assessment

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in Indonesia?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Indonesia these factors move both.

  • Size of the accreditation scope
  • Accreditation body application and assessment fees, separate from consulting
  • Equipment calibration and reference material needs

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in Indonesia

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Indonesia are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

ISO 17025 in Indonesia: questions clients ask

Which body accredits laboratories in Indonesia?

Komite Akreditasi Nasional (KAN), the national accreditation body, accredits laboratories in Indonesia. It is an ILAC MRA signatory, so laboratories wanting recognised competence for testing or calibration apply to KAN and not to a commercial certification body. That is the route for laboratories, and it differs from the route that management-system certification bodies follow.

    Is ISO 17025 a certification?

No. ISO/IEC 17025 leads to accreditation, which an accreditation body grants after assessing a laboratory's competence. A certification body does not issue it, and the difference matters when customers ask whether you are certified or accredited. Describe your status as accredited, in any tender, customer letter or website text, so that readers are not misled about what you hold.

    Are KAN-accredited results recognised abroad?

Generally yes for the scopes covered. KAN is an ILAC MRA signatory for testing and calibration, which is the arrangement that supports acceptance of accredited results across borders. Confirm with your overseas customer that its own acceptance rules match. This applies to the scopes the signatory covers, so check that your own accredited scope falls inside them.
