In short

ISO 27001 certification in India at a glance

SEBI Cybersecurity and Cyber Resilience Framework (CSCRF), Circular SEBI/HO/ITD-1/ITD_CSC_EXT/P/CIR/2024/113 requires ISO/IEC 27001 for the organisations it covers. Most Indian buyers ask for it anyway.

SEBI's Cybersecurity and Cyber Resilience Framework of August 2024 goes further than most regulators: it states that ISO 27001 certification shall be mandatory for market infrastructure institutions and Qualified REs, with evidence submitted alongside the cyber audit report. IRDAI's 2023 guidelines let insurers accept an ISO27001-certified vendor, where the services sit inside the certificate's scope, in place of their own periodic audits. RBI's directions on IT governance and IT outsourcing cite no standard but expect information security, audit coverage and continuity from banks and their providers, while CERT-In's 2022 directions set incident-reporting and log duties for every body corporate. A certified ISMS lets one control set answer all of them. Certification comes from a certification body accredited for information security management systems, a scope within NABCB's international recognition. Sterling implements the ISMS from its Navi Mumbai office for BPOs, fintechs, IT service firms and regulated entities, mapping each regulator's requirements into the same control set. The local route and questions follow.

The need

Who needs ISO 27001 in India, and what happens without it

For some organisations in India it is a legal requirement. For most, the question comes from a buyer, a regulator or a partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • SEBI market infrastructure institutions and Qualified REsCSCRF states ISO 27001 certification shall be mandatory for them.
  • Vendors to insurersIRDAI accepts an ISO27001-certified vendor, with the services in scope, in place of periodic audits.
  • IT service providers to banks and NBFCsRBI's IT outsourcing direction requires due diligence on security, audit coverage and continuity.
  • BPOs and IT firms processing personal dataDPDP Act security safeguards and CERT-In incident directions apply.
  • Banks, NBFCs and other RBI-regulated entitiesRBI's IT governance direction requires board-approved information security policies and an ISC/CISO structure.

ISO 27001 requirements in India

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27001 requires a company to prove six things about how it protects the information it holds.

You know what you are protectingThe scope is defined: the information, systems, locations and people that matter, and who inside and outside relies on them.
Management owns itTop management sets the information security policy and objectives, assigns roles and gives the effort the resources it needs.
You decided what could go wrong, and what to do about itSecurity risks are assessed against agreed criteria, and each is treated with a recorded choice of safeguards and the reasons for it.
The safeguards work every dayAccess, suppliers, devices, backups, incidents and staff awareness are managed as routine operations, not one-off projects.
You can show itPolicies, risk decisions and records are kept, so an auditor sees the system working in practice rather than on paper.
You check yourselvesSecurity performance is measured, internal audits and management reviews take place, and what they find is put right.

In India these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27001 explained →

How Sterling gets an Indian company certified

How to get ISO 27001 certified in India

One team from the Mumbai office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Across India from the Navi Mumbai office: on-site in Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, on-site or remote for other states; remote delivery for distributed teams.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 27001 and the Indian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
  5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.
Included in every engagement
  • End to end, from one team
  • Effivity ISO & GRC software
  • Preferential Sterling Academy access, with complimentary awareness training for your people
  • Internal auditor training for your audit team, as applicable to your standard
  • Vulnerability assessment on ISMS engagements

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.

Time

How long does ISO 27001 certification take in India?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In India these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • SEBI or IRDAI evidence needs that fix the scope
  • Number of delivery centres and client accounts in scope
  • Evidence maturity (logs, access reviews, internal audit) before stage 2
  • Certification body scheduling around festival holidays

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 27001 certification cost in India?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In India these factors move both.

  • Number of sites, headcount and client environments in scope
  • Complexity of the IT estate, including cloud and outsourced services
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Mapping to CSCRF, IRDAI or RBI requirements alongside the ISMS

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 27001 consultants and certification bodies in India

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in India are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27001 in India (4)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
SEBI Cybersecurity and Cyber Resilience Framework (CSCRF), Circular SEBI/HO/ITD-1/ITD_CSC_EXT/P/CIR/2024/113Requires
ISO 27001 certification shall be mandatory for MIIs and Qualified REs; evidence submitted with the cyber audit report.
IRDAI Information and Cyber Security Guidelines, 2023Refers to / expects
An ISO27001-certified vendor with the services in scope may be accepted in place of periodic audits.
RBI Master Direction on Information Technology Governance, Risk, Controls and Assurance Practices (RBI/2023-24/107)Expected in practice
Information security governance, CISO and controls; no standard cited.
CERT-In Directions No. 20(3)/2022-CERT-In dated 28 April 2022Expected in practice
Incident reporting, clock synchronisation and log retention; no standard cited.

"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 27001 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 27001 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in India

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by NABCB or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27001 hub →

Audit language

English audits are the norm; agree interviews in Hindi or the state language, any interpreter and the document language with the certification body at application.

Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 27001 in India: questions clients ask

Is ISO 27001 mandatory in India?

Only for certain entities. SEBI's CSCRF states that ISO 27001 certification shall be mandatory for market infrastructure institutions and Qualified REs. The other regulators checked go differently: RBI cites no mandate, and IRDAI accepts certification as a substitute for audits of vendors. Confirm your position with your regulator.

Does an ISO 27001 certificate replace an insurer's vendor audit?

Only where the services sit within the certificate's scope, or statement of applicability. IRDAI's 2023 guidelines allow an insurer to accept an ISO27001-certified vendor in place of periodic audits, with a self-certificate and a copy of the certificate. The insurer decides what it accepts, so check with it.

Which accreditation should the certification body hold?

Pick a body accredited for information security management systems by NABCB, or by another accreditation body within the international recognition arrangements. NABCB's recognition includes information security management systems. Check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector, because no body is endorsed here.

Does ISO 27001 satisfy CERT-In's directions?

No, it supports them. CERT-In's directions set specific duties on reporting, clock synchronisation and logs that your ISMS must put into practice, and certification does not replace them. Build those duties into the controls so the audit evidence shows them working.
