In short

ISO 45001 certification in India at a glance

One Indian instrument bears on ISO 45001. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in India keep asking for the certificate?

Shop floors, construction sites and process plants carry the hazards ISO 45001 is built for: machinery, work at height, chemicals, contractors and shift work. The standard does not replace Indian safety law; it gives one management system for hazard identification, worker consultation and participation, incident investigation and evaluation of legal compliance. Listed groups already report against the nine responsible-business principles in the BRSR that SEBI's 2021 circular requires of the top 1000 companies, and their contractors are asked to show the same discipline. Certification is granted by an accredited certification body; NABCB's international recognition includes occupational health and safety management systems, and the Bureau of Indian Standards certifies to IS/ISO 45001 as well. Sterling's Navi Mumbai office runs the implementation on the shop floor with supervisors and contractor managers, keeping records in Effivity and training through Sterling Academy, both included. The certification route and the questions site managers ask follow.

The need

Who needs ISO 45001 in India, and what happens without it

In India the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Listed groups and their contractorsBRSR reporting against responsible-business principles includes the workforce.
  • Suppliers to multinational and public-sector buyersSupplier qualification and bids may ask for an OH&S management system.

ISO 45001 requirements in India

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 45001 requires a company to prove six things about keeping its people safe and healthy at work.

Leadership takes responsibility for safetyTop management is accountable for preventing work-related injury and ill health, and sets a policy and objectives to do so.
Workers have a real sayWorkers and their representatives are consulted and take part in decisions on hazards, controls, incidents and the system itself.
You know the hazards and the risksHazards are identified on an ongoing basis, risks are assessed, and health and safety legal requirements are known and met.
Controls follow the right orderRisks are reduced using the hierarchy of controls, from eliminating the hazard down to protective equipment, including for contractors.
You are prepared for emergenciesEmergency situations are identified, response plans are in place, people are trained and drills are carried out.
Incidents lead to learningIncidents and nonconformities are investigated, causes are corrected, and performance is monitored, audited and reviewed.

In India these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 45001 explained →

How Sterling gets an Indian company certified

How to get ISO 45001 certified in India

One team from the Mumbai office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Across India from the Navi Mumbai office: on-site in Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, on-site or remote for other states; remote delivery for distributed teams.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO 45001 and the Indian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.

Time

How long does ISO 45001 certification take in India?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In India these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of sites and contractor workforce in scope
  • Hazard identification and legal register completeness
  • Worker consultation and participation records
  • Certification body scheduling around festival holidays

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 45001 certification cost in India?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In India these factors move both.

  • Number of sites and the hazard profile of operations
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Contractor management arrangements to be built
  • Integration with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 45001 consultants and certification bodies in India

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 45001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in India are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 45001 in India (3)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
NABCB international recognition (ISO/IEC 17021-1 management-system certification)Accreditation
NABCB states it is an IAF, ILAC and APAC member and MLA/MRA signatory for scopes including occupational health and safety management systems; no mandate.
Bureau of Indian Standards — systems under certificationMarket driver
BIS lists IS/ISO 45001 among the systems it certifies as a certification body; no mandate.
SEBI Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (Circular SEBI/HO/CFD/CMD-2/P/CIR/2021/562)Expected in practice
Responsible-business disclosures for the top 1000 listed companies; ISO 45001 not cited.

"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO 45001 covers without naming a standard, and ISO 45001 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in India

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by NABCB or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 45001 hub →

Audit language

English audits are the norm; agree interviews in Hindi or the state language, any interpreter and the document language with the certification body at application.

Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 45001 in India: questions clients ask

Who certifies ISO 45001 in India?

NABCB recognition includes occupational health and safety management systems, so NABCB-accredited certification bodies are one route. BIS also certifies to IS/ISO 45001, acting as a certification body. Check that your chosen certifier's accreditation scope covers your sector, and ask for the scope document itself instead of relying on a general statement from the body.

Are contract workers in scope?

Yes, where they work under the organisation's control. The standard includes workers under that control, and consultation arrangements cover them as well. Contractor management is often where a system needs building, so plan evidence of how contract workers are included.
