In short

ISO 27701 certification in India at a glance

One Indian instrument bears on ISO/IEC 27701. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in India keep asking for the certificate?

Privacy teams preparing for the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025 need more than a policy: they need records of processing, consent and notice controls, rights handling, processor contracts and breach procedures that someone outside the organisation can test. ISO/IEC 27701 provides that structure by extending an ISO 27001 information security management system into a privacy information management system, with controls for both controllers and processors. It is not a DPDP certificate, because the Act has none, but a certificate from an accredited body is a recognised external benchmark that Indian Data Fiduciaries and the BPOs processing data for them can show to customers. NABCB's published recognition does not list ISO/IEC 27701, so confirm that the certification body's accreditation scope covers it explicitly. Sterling's Navi Mumbai office extends the client's ISMS, maps each DPDP duty to a 27701 control and readies the evidence, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included. The local route and questions follow.

The need

Who needs ISO 27701 in India, and what happens without it

In India the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Data Fiduciaries preparing for the DPDP RulesA certified PIMS is an external benchmark for DPDP privacy controls.
  • BPOs and IT firms acting as processorsClients ask processors to evidence privacy controls.
  • Organisations already certified to ISO 27001ISO/IEC 27701 extends the ISMS.

Requirements

ISO 27701 requirements in India

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27701 requires a company to prove six things about how it handles personal data.

You know whose data you hold and whyYou know what personal data you process, for which purposes and on what basis, and whether you act as controller, processor or both.
Privacy has an ownerManagement assigns responsibility for privacy and sets objectives, so everyone who handles personal data knows their role.
You assessed the privacy risksRisks to the people whose data you process are assessed and treated, including when new products and processes are designed.
People can exercise their rightsRequests to access, correct or delete data, and other individual rights, run through a defined and timely process.
Sharing and suppliers are controlledDisclosures, transfers and processors are governed by agreements and checks, so data is used only as agreed.
You can demonstrate itRecords of processing, notices and decisions are kept, and the privacy system is audited and reviewed like any management system.

In India these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27701 explained →

How Sterling gets an Indian company certified

How to get ISO 27701 certified in India

One team from the Mumbai office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Across India from the Navi Mumbai office: on-site in Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, on-site or remote for other states; remote delivery for distributed teams.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 27701 and the Indian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
  5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.
Included in every engagement
  • End to end, from one team
  • Effivity ISO & GRC software
  • Preferential Sterling Academy access, with complimentary awareness training for your people
  • Internal auditor training for your audit team, as applicable to your standard
  • Vulnerability assessment on ISMS engagements

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.

Time

How long does ISO 27701 certification take in India?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In India these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Existing ISO 27001 certificate and scope
  • Processing activities and controller/processor roles to map
  • DPDP notice, consent and rights processes to align
  • Certification body scheduling around festival holidays

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 27701 certification cost in India?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In India these factors move both.

  • Size of the ISMS scope to extend
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Number of processing activities and data flows
  • Privacy tooling

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 27701 consultants and certification bodies in India

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27701 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in India are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27701 in India (2)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and Rules, 2025Expected in practice
Duties for Data Fiduciaries and Processors; no certificate and no standard cited.
    NABCB international recognitionAccreditation
ISO/IEC 27701 is not listed among NABCB's recognised scopes on its pages; confirm the certification body's accreditation covers it.

"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 27701 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 27701 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in India

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by NABCB or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Confirm the body's accreditation explicitly covers ISO/IEC 27701. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27701 hub →

    Audit language

English audits are the norm; agree interviews in Hindi or the state language, any interpreter and the document language with the certification body at application.

    Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 27701 in India: questions clients ask

Does ISO/IEC 27701 prove DPDP compliance?

No. The DPDP Act has no certificate, so ISO/IEC 27701 cannot prove compliance with it. The standard is an external benchmark for privacy controls. Use it to strengthen your evidence, and take legal advice on what the Act and Rules require of you.

Do we need ISO 27001 first?

Yes, in practice. ISO/IEC 27701 extends an ISO 27001 information security management system, so the existing certificate and scope are the starting point. Without that base you would have to build the information security system first, so organisations without ISO 27001 usually plan both together.

Which accreditation should the certification body hold?

Check explicitly. NABCB's pages do not list ISO/IEC 27701 among its recognised scopes, so a certification body's NABCB accreditation does not by itself settle the question. Ask the body to show that its accreditation covers this standard before you appoint it.
