In short

ISO 22000 certification in Egypt at a glance

In Egypt, ISO 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

A food factory in Egypt answers to two audiences at once. The National Food Safety Authority, set up by Law No. 1 of 2017, registers factories, warehouses and other establishments and keeps a register of bodies certifying export and import consignments. Customers, meanwhile, ask for ISO 22000 as proof that hazards are controlled across the plant, and the Egyptian Accreditation Council has been recognised for it, with ISO 22003-1, since 2017. The two routes complement each other: registration is regulatory, the certificate voluntary. Beverage makers, ingredient and packaging suppliers, exporters and institutional caterers meet the same questions. Sterling's Dubai office helps plants build prerequisite programmes, hazard analysis, traceability and recall controls and run internal audits, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included, while an accredited certification body decides on the certificate.

The need

Who needs ISO 22000 in Egypt, and what happens without it

In Egypt the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Food and beverage manufacturersRetailers, brand owners and export customers ask for a certified food safety system, and NFSA registers factories separately.
  • Factories registering with the National Food Safety AuthorityNFSA's site lists registration and control of factories, and a food safety system supports the controls its inspectors expect.
  • Packaging, ingredient and cold-chain suppliersFood manufacturers push food safety requirements down to the suppliers around them.
  • Exporters of processed foodImporting countries and buyers ask for evidence of hazard control; NFSA's site lists a register of conformity assessment bodies for export consignments.
  • Caterers and institutional food-service operatorsHotels, hospitals and corporate customers ask for documented hazard control.

Requirements

ISO 22000 requirements in Egypt

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22000 requires a company to prove six things about keeping food safe from supplier to customer.

The basics of hygiene are in placePrerequisite programmes cover premises, cleaning, pest control, personal hygiene, water, maintenance and supplier approval.
You analysed the hazardsBiological, chemical and physical hazards are identified for each product and process step, and the controls needed are decided.
Critical controls are monitoredControl measures are validated, monitored and acted on when limits are breached, following HACCP principles.
Unsafe product does not leaveTraceability, handling of potentially unsafe product, withdrawal and recall are planned and tested.
Food safety information flows along the chainInformation is exchanged with suppliers, customers, authorities and your own staff so hazards are not missed.
Leadership reviews and improvesManagement sets food safety policy and objectives, the system is verified and audited, and it is updated as risks change.

In Egypt these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22000 explained →

How Sterling gets an Egyptian company certified

Time

How long does ISO 22000 certification take in Egypt?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Egypt these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of product lines, sites and process steps
  • State of prerequisite programmes and hygiene zoning
  • Traceability, recall and supplier control maturity
  • Certification body scheduling around Ramadan production peaks

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 22000 certification cost in Egypt?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Egypt these factors move both.

  • Number of sites, lines and products in scope
  • Premises, equipment and monitoring upgrades
  • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
  • Laboratory testing used for verification

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Egypt

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Egypt are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 22000 in Egypt (3)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) recognition entriesMarket driver
Global ACI shows EGAC recognised for ISO 22000, with ISO 22003-1, from 25 October 2017, and for FSSC 22000 scheme parts from 30 August 2024; this is not a mandate.
National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) — Law No. 1 of 2017Does not replace
NFSA is the single food safety authority created by Law No. 1 of 2017 and runs factory and establishment registration; an ISO 22000 certificate is separate and voluntary.
National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) — Law No. 1 of 2017Context
The NFSA site lists a register of conformity assessment bodies issuing certificates for imported and exported food consignments, which is a different certificate from a management system certificate.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Egypt

Use a certification body accredited for ISO 22000 by the Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. Global ACI lists EGAC as recognised for ISO 22000 management systems certification, with ISO 22003-1, from October 2017. The accredited certification body decides, not Sterling. Audit language

Arabic is the official language and English is common in business; agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and say early if shop-floor interviews will run in Arabic.

Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; production areas, storage and hygiene facilities are normally visited on-site.

ISO 22000 in Egypt: questions clients ask

Does NFSA registration replace ISO 22000?

No. NFSA registers factories and other food establishments under Law No. 1 of 2017, and that registration is a regulatory step. ISO 22000 is a voluntary management system certificate that customers ask for. Having one does not exempt you from NFSA procedures, and NFSA registration does not give you the certificate. Confirm current registration steps with the Authority.

Who certifies ISO 22000 in Egypt?

Certificates come from accredited certification bodies; Sterling plays no part. The accreditation listing at Global ACI records the Egyptian Accreditation Council as recognised for ISO 22000, together with ISO 22003-1, since October 2017, so a body accredited at home is an option. Bodies accredited abroad also audit in Egypt, and the accreditation scope on any certificate deserves a check before you sign.

How is ISO 22000 different from HACCP?

Think of HACCP as the hazard-control method and ISO 22000 as the whole management framework around it. The standard adds prerequisite programmes, communication along the food chain, management review and continual improvement to the HACCP principles. Plants that already run solid hazard analysis are partway there. Retailers differ on which they accept, so ask each key customer before choosing.

What do Egyptian food plants most often need to fix?

Hygiene zoning, drainage and pest control in older buildings, and traceability records that cannot yet support a fast recall. Those need physical work or new routines, so they set the pace. A mock recall and a walk through prerequisite controls early in the project show quickly what has to be built.
