ISO 27001 certification in Denmark at a glance
In Denmark, ISO/IEC 27001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
The Danish cybersecurity regulator has already drawn the map: the Styrelsen for Samfundssikkerhed's guidance on the NIS 2-loven measures sets out, chapter by chapter, which sections of DS/EN ISO/IEC 27001:2023 correspond to each duty, while warning that using a standard does not by itself prove compliance. That makes a certified management system attractive to essential and important entities, to municipalities and state bodies that SAMSIK supervises, and to suppliers whose customers include financial entities under DORA. Certification itself comes from a body accredited by DANAK after a stage 1 and stage 2 audit. Sterling's Enschede office scopes the system, runs the risk assessment, writes the controls and rehearses the internal audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement. Danish-specific questions are answered below.
Who needs ISO 27001 in Denmark, and what happens without it
In Denmark the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Entities mapping their NIS 2 measures to ISO/IEC 27001SAMSIK's guidance on the measures cross-references DS/EN ISO/IEC 27001:2023 chapter by chapter, so an existing management system gives a ready structure.
- State authorities, municipalities and their suppliersSAMSIK supervises these bodies under the NIS 2 Law and publishes an ISO 27001 implementation guide for authorities.
- ICT providers to banks, insurers and payment firmsDORA makes the financial entity answerable for ICT third-party risk, so providers meet security due diligence even though Finanstilsynet's page does not name ISO/IEC 27001.
- Processors handling personal data for Danish controllersDatatilsynet's catalogue of security measures draws on ISO information security standards, which makes the management system a natural evidence base.
- SaaS and digital-service firms selling to regulated customersEnterprise customers often ask for an independently certified information security management system before contracting.
Not sure which of these applies to you?Answer a short set of questions and your readiness report arrives by e-mail.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27001 requires a company to prove six things about how it protects the information it holds.
In Denmark these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27001 explained →

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.
How long does ISO 27001 certification take in Denmark?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Denmark these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Whether the entity is essential or important under the NIS 2-loven
- Maturity of existing controls, internal audit and management review
- Number of sites, cloud tenants and suppliers in scope
- Certification body scheduling around the Danish summer holiday period
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 27001 certification cost in Denmark?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Denmark these factors move both.
- Size of the scope and number of sites
- Depth of control remediation needed
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
- Effort to align the system with SAMSIK's measure guidance
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 27001 consultants and certification bodies in Denmark
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Denmark are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27001 in Denmark (4)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| SAMSIK guidance on implementing the cybersecurity measures of the NIS 2 Law | Regulator guidance Each chapter maps the measures to sections of DS/EN ISO/IEC 27001:2023, NIST CSF 2.0, IEC 62443 and other standards, and says that following a standard helps compliance but is not in itself assurance that the requirements are met. |
| sikkerdigital.dk ISO 27001 implementation guidance for authorities | Regulator guidance SAMSIK's portal publishes an ISO 27001 implementation guide for public authorities covering management system, roles, risk, continuity, supplier management and access control. |
| Datatilsynet catalogue of security measures | Regulator guidance The Authority says its examples draw on its inspections, breach notifications, EDPB guidance and information security requirements highlighted by ISO information security standards, the national cybersecurity centre and the security requirements for state authorities. |
| Regulation (EU) 2022/2554 (DORA), supervised in Denmark by Finanstilsynet | The regulation itself Finanstilsynet says it applies directly to covered financial entities from 17 January 2025 and covers ICT risk management, incident reporting, resilience testing and ICT third-party risk. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Denmark
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by DANAK, Denmark's national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Check that the body's accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27001 hub →
Audit language
Danish is the official language and English is widely used in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.
Remote and on-site
Stage 1 and stage 2 audits are normally done on-site; remote elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules.
ISO 27001 in Denmark: questions clients ask
Does Danish NIS 2 guidance point to ISO/IEC 27001?
Yes. SAMSIK's guide to implementing the cybersecurity measures lists DS/EN ISO/IEC 27001:2023 among the standards whose sections are mapped to each measure, alongside NIST CSF 2.0 and IEC 62443. It adds that following a standard helps compliance without guaranteeing it. The sector authority decides whether an entity meets the law, so ask it directly.
Is there ISO 27001 help written for Danish public authorities?
There is. SAMSIK's sikkerdigital.dk portal carries an ISO 27001 implementation section for authorities, covering the management system, roles, risk management, continuity, supplier management and access control. It is guidance rather than a certificate requirement. Public bodies should check their own ministry or sector rules for any formal certification duty.
How does ISO/IEC 27001 relate to what Datatilsynet expects on security?
Closely, though it is not a legal test. Datatilsynet's catalogue of measures says its examples draw partly on information security requirements highlighted by ISO standards, and it notes that ISO 27001 splits measures into more categories than the GDPR does. A certified system gives structure and records. Whether a particular measure is adequate is for the Authority or your counsel.
Who issues an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate in Denmark?
A certification body, never Sterling. Pick one accredited by DANAK for this standard, or by an equivalent accreditation body, and confirm the scope covers your sector. EA lists DANAK as an MLA signatory with a management system certification scope. Sterling prepares the management system, risk assessment and internal audit before the stage 1 and stage 2 audits.
