In short

SOC 2 attestation in Denmark at a glance

In Denmark, SOC 2 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

A SOC 2 report is a customer ask, not a Danish legal duty. It arrives through two doors: US buyers who expect one in procurement, and European financial customers who, since DORA became applicable on 17 January 2025, remain responsible for the risk of relying on ICT suppliers. Suppliers to entities under the NIS 2-loven meet similar questions from SAMSIK and sector-authority supervised customers. The report is written by a licensed CPA firm after examining controls against the AICPA trust services criteria, as a Type 1 or Type 2 report; Sterling does not attest. Sterling's Enschede office scopes criteria, builds controls and evidence collection and prepares teams for the examiner, aligning with ISO/IEC 27001 where clients hold both, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement.

The need

Who needs SOC 2 in Denmark, and what happens without it

In Denmark the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • SaaS and cloud providers selling to Danish financial institutionsDORA puts ICT third-party risk on the financial entity, so providers meet requests for independent assurance.
  • Suppliers to NIS 2 covered entitiesEntities under SAMSIK or sector authorities ask suppliers for security assurance.
  • Danish technology firms selling to US customersUS buyers often ask for a SOC 2 report in procurement.

Requirements

SOC 2 requirements in Denmark

Strip away the vocabulary and SOC 2 asks a service organisation to report on six things about the controls behind its service.

You describe your system accuratelyA system description sets out your services, infrastructure, people, data and the boundaries of what the report covers.
Security is designed inControls protect the system against unauthorised access and use; security is the one category every SOC 2 report includes.
Access is granted on need and reviewedLogical and physical access is approved on need, removed when no longer required and reviewed regularly.
Changes and operations are controlledSystem changes are authorised and tested, and operations are monitored so incidents are detected and handled.
Risks and vendors are assessedRisks to your commitments, including those coming from vendors and business partners, are assessed and acted on.
Controls work over timeFor a Type 2 report, a licensed CPA firm tests that the controls operated effectively across the review period.

In Denmark these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: SOC 2 explained →

    Time

How long does SOC 2 attestation take in Denmark?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Denmark these are the factors that set the timeline.

    • Type 1 or Type 2 report and the observation window
    • Selected trust services criteria
    • Maturity of controls and evidence collection
    • CPA firm availability

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

    Cost

How much does SOC 2 attestation cost in Denmark?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the CPA firm’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Denmark these factors move both.

    • Systems and criteria in scope
    • Control remediation and tooling
    • CPA firm fees, quoted separately
    • Number of subservice organisations

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

    Choosing a partner

SOC 2 consultants and auditors in Denmark

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; a licensed CPA firm then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

    • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers SOC 2 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
    • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Denmark are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
    • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
    • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive SOC 2 in Denmark (3)

      InstrumentHow it treats the standard
AICPA as owner of the SOC professional standardsScheme rule
The AICPA says it promulgates the professional standards for SOC engagements, which CPA firms perform for service organisations.
Regulation (EU) 2022/2554 (DORA), supervised in Denmark by FinanstilsynetThe regulation itself
Finanstilsynet says it applies directly to covered financial entities from 17 January 2025 and covers ICT risk management, incident reporting, resilience testing and ICT third-party risk.
SAMSIK guidance on implementing the cybersecurity measures of the NIS 2 LawRegulator guidance
Each chapter maps the measures to sections of DS/EN ISO/IEC 27001:2023, NIST CSF 2.0, IEC 62443 and other standards, and says that following a standard helps compliance but is not in itself assurance that the requirements are met.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Denmark

Attestation, not certification: a SOC 2 report is issued by a licensed CPA firm after an examination against the AICPA trust services criteria. Sterling prepares the controls and evidence; it does not attest. Edition and transition details: SOC 2 hub →

      Audit language

Reports are written in English for the customers who request them. Internal documentation can be in Danish or English.

      Remote and on-site

The CPA firm decides how much fieldwork is remote; evidence collection for cloud environments is commonly remote.

SOC 2 in Denmark: questions clients ask

Do Danish authorities require SOC 2?

No. SOC 2 comes from the US accounting profession, and none of the Danish instruments cited here asks for it. Demand arises from customers, notably US buyers and firms running third-party risk reviews. The AICPA sets the professional standards, so ask each customer which report type and criteria it expects before scoping.

Why do Danish financial customers ask suppliers for assurance?

Because DORA, which Finanstilsynet says applies directly to covered financial entities from 17 January 2025, covers ICT third-party risk, and the financial entity remains responsible. A supplier with an independent report answers due-diligence questions faster. DORA does not name SOC 2, so the type of report is the customer's call.

      Is a SOC 2 report a certificate?

No. It is an attestation report written by a licensed CPA firm that states an opinion on your controls, with no certificate and no pass mark. The AICPA promulgates the professional standards for SOC engagements. Sterling prepares controls and evidence but cannot attest, and the examiner must remain independent.

Should we choose SOC 2 or ISO/IEC 27001 for Danish customers?

Check what your customers ask for. Danish and European buyers often point to ISO/IEC 27001, which SAMSIK's NIS 2 guidance maps to, while US buyers more often request SOC 2. The control sets overlap, so many providers build one control set for both. SOC 2 does not substitute for the ISO route in NIS 2 mapping.
