In short

ISO 13485 certification in Denmark at a glance

In Denmark, ISO 13485 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Denmark's medical device sector sells into a regulatory regime where the Danish Medicines Agency explains the rules in plain terms: devices need CE marking after a conformity assessment, the manufacturer is responsible for safety and performance, and classes above the lowest risk use a notified body. Its pages do not name ISO 13485, yet a certified quality management system is how many manufacturers organise design controls, risk management and supplier oversight. Demand is concentrated in the Danish life sciences cluster, among startups, small manufacturers and the suppliers around them. Certificates come from certification bodies accredited by DANAK or an equivalent accreditation body, and a notified body is a separate role. Sterling's Enschede office prepares the quality system and technical file alignment, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 13485 in Denmark, and what happens without it

In Denmark the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Danish medical device manufacturersThe Danish Medicines Agency says devices need CE marking after a conformity assessment and that the manufacturer is responsible for performance and safety.
  • Manufacturers of higher-risk devicesClasses above the lowest risk class must use a notified body, which reviews technical documentation and quality control.
  • Component and contract suppliers to device makersDevice manufacturers pass quality-system expectations down their supply chains.
  • Startups and SMEs in the life sciences clusterThe Agency offers regulatory advice meetings to startups, small manufacturers and research units, which is where a quality system is first scoped.
  • Outsourced design, software and sterilisation service providersManufacturers must control critical suppliers within their quality system, so providers are asked to show an equivalent system.

Requirements

ISO 13485 requirements in Denmark

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 13485 requires a company to prove six things about making medical devices that are safe and work as intended.

Regulatory requirements are built inThe quality system covers the regulatory requirements of each market you supply and your role in the device supply chain.
Design is controlledDesign and development are planned, verified and validated, with changes controlled and a file kept for each device.
Risk management runs through the life cycleRisks to safety and performance are managed from design through production, delivery and use.
Production and suppliers are controlledProduction, process validation, cleanliness, sterilisation where relevant and purchased components are controlled and recorded.
Every device can be tracedIdentification and traceability let you find the components, batches and records behind any device you have released.
Complaints and feedback drive actionComplaints and nonconformities are handled, reported to regulators where required, and closed through corrective and preventive action.

In Denmark these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 13485 explained →

How Sterling gets a Danish company certified

Time

How long does ISO 13485 certification take in Denmark?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Denmark these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Device risk class and whether a notified body is involved
  • Design and development controls already in place
  • Sterile or implantable processes and supplier controls
  • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 13485 certification cost in Denmark?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Denmark these factors move both.

  • Number of sites and product families
  • Technical documentation and risk management remediation
  • Certification body and notified body fees, quoted separately
  • Validation of software and processes

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 13485 consultants and certification bodies in Denmark

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 13485 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Denmark are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 13485 in Denmark (3)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
EU medical device regulations as applied by the Danish Medicines Agency (Lægemiddelstyrelsen)Regulator page
Devices need CE marking after a conformity assessment, higher risk classes need a notified body, and the page does not name ISO 13485.
DANAK (Den Danske Akkrediteringsfond) as Denmark's national accreditation bodyRecognition
DANAK describes itself as the national accreditation body for laboratories, certification bodies, inspection bodies and validation and verification bodies.
    EA directory entry for DANAKRecognition
EA lists DANAK as an MLA signatory with scopes that include management system certification, product and person certification, inspection, calibration and testing.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Denmark

Use a certification body accredited by DANAK for management system certification, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). A notified body designated under the EU regulations is a separate role from an ISO 13485 certification body, and some firms use the same organisation for both; confirm each scope. Audit language

Danish is the official language and English is widely used in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.

    Remote and on-site

Stage 1 and stage 2 audits are on-site at manufacturing and design locations; some document review can be remote at the body's discretion.

ISO 13485 in Denmark: questions clients ask

Does the Danish Medicines Agency require ISO 13485?

Its pages on CE marking and marketing do not name ISO 13485. They say devices need CE marking after a conformity assessment, that higher risk classes use a notified body, and that manufacturers choose their body. In practice a certified quality system is how many manufacturers evidence the quality control the regulations expect. Check the route for your class with the Agency or your notified body.

Does a medical device need approval before it is sold in Denmark?

Not from the authorities in advance. The Danish Medicines Agency states that devices do not require official approval before marketing, but must carry CE marking, with a notified body's identification number for classes IIa, IIb and III and IVD classes B to D. The manufacturer carries responsibility for performance and safety, so documentation must be ready before CE marking.

Can small Danish medical device firms get regulatory guidance?

Yes. The Danish Medicines Agency offers meetings of regulatory advice on the EU device and IVD regulations, aimed at startups, small and medium-sized manufacturers and educational and research units. They cover CE marking, clinical investigations and the regulations in general. Use the meeting to plan quality system scope before engaging a certification body.

Which accreditation should an ISO 13485 certification body hold?

Accreditation for management system certification, ideally from DANAK or an equivalent body. EA lists DANAK as an MLA signatory with a management system certification scope. Notified body designation under the device regulations is a separate matter, so check scopes. Sterling prepares the quality system and does not certify.
