In short

ISO 17025 accreditation in Brazil at a glance

In Brazil, ISO/IEC 17025 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

For a laboratory in Brazil, accreditation is the credential that makes a result trusted beyond the building. Cgcre, the accreditation coordination of Inmetro, accredits testing and calibration laboratories against ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and clinical laboratories against ABNT NBR ISO 15189:2022, and Global ACI lists it as a Full Member and MRA signatory with ISO/IEC 17025 recognised since November 2000. Inmetro publishes databases of accredited laboratories and warns that scopes can be cancelled at any time, so buyers check them before relying on a report. Sterling cannot accredit anyone: its New York office prepares laboratories by building the quality system, validating methods, estimating measurement uncertainty, arranging proficiency testing and rehearsing the assessment, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 17025 in Brazil, and what happens without it

In Brazil the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Testing laboratories for industry, food and environmentAccreditation by Cgcre is how a Brazilian test result earns recognition.
  • Calibration laboratoriesCgcre accredits calibration laboratories, and users look for the accredited scope.
  • In-house laboratories of manufacturersCustomers and regulators ask for competent measurement and traceable results.
  • Laboratories serving health, food and cosmetics makersProduct registration and good practice evidence rely on dependable test data.
  • Laboratories moving into new methods or fieldsScope extensions are assessed by the accreditation body.

Requirements

ISO 17025 requirements in Brazil

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.

You are impartialCommercial, financial or other pressures do not influence results, and risks to impartiality are identified and managed.
Staff are competent and authorisedEach person who performs, reviews or reports work is qualified, trained, monitored and authorised for those tasks.
Equipment is calibrated and traceableEquipment is fit for purpose and calibrated, with measurement results traceable to recognised references.
Methods are validated or verifiedMethods suit the work, are validated where needed or verified before use, and measurement uncertainty is evaluated.
Results are checked and reported properlyQuality control and proficiency testing confirm validity, and reports state results clearly, accurately and without ambiguity.
The management system worksComplaints, nonconforming work, risks, internal audits and management review run under a documented management system.

In Brazil these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in Brazil?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Brazil these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of methods and measurement disciplines in the scope
  • Maturity of uncertainty, traceability and validation records
  • Proficiency testing participation
  • Assessor availability

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in Brazil?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Brazil these factors move both.

  • Scope size and the number of methods
  • Equipment calibration, reference materials and environmental control
  • Accreditation body assessment fees, quoted separately from consulting
  • Proficiency testing schemes

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in Brazil

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Brazil are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 17025 in Brazil (3)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Cgcre (Inmetro) and its Global ACI recognitionAccreditation
Cgcre accredits testing and calibration laboratories against ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and clinical laboratories against ABNT NBR ISO 15189:2022; Global ACI records its ISO/IEC 17025 recognition since 2 November 2000.
Inmetro — database of accredited laboratoriesPublic register
Inmetro publishes lists of accredited testing and calibration laboratories and advises confirming a scope there because scopes can be cancelled at any time.
Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (Anvisa)Context
Anvisa's laboratory network and certificates concern health-regulated products; accreditation for ISO/IEC 17025 does not replace its requirements.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Brazil

ISO/IEC 17025 is an accreditation, not a certification: the national accreditation body assesses the laboratory's competence for a defined scope of methods. In Brazil that body is Cgcre of Inmetro, which accredits testing and calibration laboratories and which Global ACI lists as a Full Member and MRA signatory. Sterling prepares the laboratory but never accredits it. Confirm the scope and the current status of any accreditation in Inmetro's databases before relying on a report. Audit language

Portuguese is the usual language of assessment records; agree the assessment language with Cgcre at application, and say early if international customers need English reports.

    Remote and on-site

Accreditation assessors witness testing and calibration on site and review technical records; some document review can be remote.

ISO 17025 in Brazil: questions clients ask

Who accredits testing and calibration laboratories in Brazil?

Cgcre, the accreditation coordination of Inmetro. Its pages list accredited testing laboratories and calibration laboratories against ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17025:2017, and Global ACI records its ISO/IEC 17025 recognition from November 2000. Applications are assessed against a defined scope, so describe methods and ranges carefully when you apply.

    Is ISO/IEC 17025 a certificate?

No. It is an accreditation granted by the national accreditation body after assessing technical competence for each method in the scope. A management system certificate cannot stand in for it, and results from a non-accredited laboratory do not carry the accreditation mark. Check the scope statement on the accreditation certificate against the tests you actually need.

How can I check whether a Brazilian laboratory is accredited?

Inmetro publishes lists of accredited testing, calibration and clinical laboratories, and it advises confirming scopes there because accreditations can be cancelled at any time. Look for your laboratory by name, then read the accredited methods and ranges. A certificate on a wall is not enough if the scope changed.

    Does ISO/IEC 17025 help a manufacturer's in-house lab?

It can, whether or not accreditation is sought. The standard defines competent staff, valid methods, traceable measurement and impartiality, which customers and regulators trust. Many in-house laboratories work to it as a benchmark before deciding on accreditation. Accreditation adds recognition of results outside the company, at the price of assessments and scope maintenance.
