IATF 16949 certification in Brazil at a glance
In Brazil, IATF 16949 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Brazilian automotive suppliers rarely need to be told that IATF 16949 matters, since the requirement reaches them from their customers rather than from any statute. The International Automotive Task Force, a group of vehicle makers and their trade associations, owns the scheme and oversees the certification bodies it recognises. Brazilian law does not impose it. For a foundry, stamper, machining shop or electronics supplier, the practical work is building ISO 9001 into an automotive system with core tools and customer-specific requirements. Cgcre, Inmetro's accreditation coordination, is a Global ACI Full Member, yet IATF recognition decides who may certify, so choose the body carefully. Sterling's New York office supports gap analysis, core tools, customer-specific requirements and internal audits, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.
Who needs IATF 16949 in Brazil, and what happens without it
In Brazil the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Tier 1 and tier 2 automotive parts makersVehicle makers and their trade associations set IATF 16949 as the quality requirement for suppliers.
- Foundries, stampers and machining shopsSub-tier suppliers meet customer-specific requirements flowed down by their tier 1 customers.
- Plastics, electronics and wiring suppliersThese suppliers audit to the same automotive core tools and customer-specific requirements.
- Companies moving from ISO 9001 onlyIATF 16949 is built on ISO 9001, so a certified quality system is the base.
- Exporters to automotive plants in other countriesForeign vehicle makers set their own supplier requirements that apply to Brazilian plants.

Strip away the vocabulary and IATF 16949 asks a supplier to prove six things about supplying vehicle makers without defects.
In Brazil these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: IATF 16949 explained →

How long does IATF 16949 certification take in Brazil?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Brazil these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of plants and support functions in scope
- Maturity of core tools such as APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA and SPC
- Customer-specific requirement mapping
- Scheme-recognised certification body availability
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does IATF 16949 certification cost in Brazil?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Brazil these factors move both.
- Number of sites and headcount in scope
- Core tools training and measurement system upgrades
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
- Customer-specific requirement gap closure
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
IATF 16949 consultants and certification bodies in Brazil
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers IATF 16949 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Brazil are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Brazil
IATF 16949 certification is issued by certification bodies recognised under the IATF's own rules, which are separate from ordinary accreditation for ISO 9001. Do not assume that any body accredited for ISO 9001 can issue it. Ask the IATF-recognised body to show its recognition and its auditors' IATF qualification, and confirm the customer-specific requirements that apply to your vehicle maker customers. The certification body decides, not Sterling. Edition and transition details: IATF 16949 hub →
Audit language
Portuguese is the usual language of regulators, contracts and audit records, while English is common inside multinationals; agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Manufacturing plants and support functions are audited on site, with remote document review only where the scheme rules allow.
IATF 16949 in Brazil: questions clients ask
Is IATF 16949 required by Brazilian law?
No. Demand comes from vehicle makers and the supply chain, which set IATF 16949 as the quality requirement for suppliers through the International Automotive Task Force scheme. No Brazilian statute imposes it, so the question is always what your customers and their purchasing rules ask. Check the customer's supplier quality manual before planning the timetable.
Can an ISO 9001 certificate be converted to IATF 16949?
Not as a conversion. IATF 16949 builds on ISO 9001 but adds automotive process requirements, core tools and customer-specific requirements, and it is certified by IATF-recognised bodies under their own rules. An existing ISO 9001 system is a strong base, so many plants extend it. Ask the recognised body what prior evidence it will take into account.
Which body should certify a Brazilian automotive supplier?
One recognised by the IATF for IATF 16949, not merely accredited for ISO 9001. Cgcre is Brazil's accreditation body and Global ACI lists it as a Full Member, but the scheme has its own recognition rules. Ask each body for its IATF recognition proof, the auditors it would assign and how it handles your customer-specific requirements.
Do tier 2 and tier 3 suppliers need IATF 16949?
Only if their customers say so. Many vehicle makers require certification for direct suppliers, while sub-tier suppliers meet requirements their customers flow down, which may be ISO 9001 plus specific controls. Read the purchase order terms and the supplier manual, and ask your tier 1 customer in writing what it expects.
