ISO 22000 certification in Belgium at a glance
In Belgium, ISO 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Under the FASFC's rules, every Belgian food business must apply a self-checking system based on HACCP principles, and the agency lets operators who use an approved sector guide have that system validated by an accredited body. ISO 22000 is a different instrument: an international food safety management system standard that adds leadership, communication, prerequisite programmes and continual improvement, and one that multinational customers recognise. The certificate is issued by a certification body accredited, ideally, by BELAC. Producers, packaging suppliers and cold-chain handlers pick it when buyers ask for more than the legal minimum. Sterling uses its Enschede office to bridge the two: it takes the self-checking system you already have and builds the management system around it, ready for audit.
Who needs ISO 22000 in Belgium, and what happens without it
In Belgium the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Food manufacturers and processorsThe FASFC's mandatory self-checking system is based on HACCP; ISO 22000 extends it into a certified management system.
- Food packaging and ingredient suppliersCustomers ask for a certified food safety system in supplier approval.
- Cold-chain, catering and distribution firmsTraceability and hygiene are examined by customers and inspectors.
Not sure which of these applies to you?Answer a short set of questions and your readiness report arrives by e-mail.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22000 requires a company to prove six things about keeping food safe from supplier to customer.
In Belgium these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22000 explained →

How long does ISO 22000 certification take in Belgium?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Belgium these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of sites and product categories
- Maturity of HACCP and prerequisite programmes
- Traceability and recall testing
- Certification body scheduling around the summer holiday period
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 22000 certification cost in Belgium?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Belgium these factors move both.
- Sites, lines and headcount in scope
- Remediation of hygiene and traceability gaps
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Integration with ISO 9001
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Belgium
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Belgium are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 22000 in Belgium (2)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| FASFC self-checking system (Royal Decree of 14 November 2003) | Regulator page Self-checking is mandatory and must be based on HACCP principles; validation by an accredited independent certification body is voluntary and available only with an approved sector guide. |
| Royal Decree of 31 January 2006 creating the BELAC system for accreditation of conformity assessment bodies | The system itself It sets the national accreditation framework that certification bodies work within; the decree does not name any ISO management system standard. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Belgium
Use a certification body accredited for this standard by BELAC, the national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that its accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 22000 hub →
Audit language
Dutch, French and German are the official languages and English is common in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.
Remote and on-site
Audits are on-site because production and storage areas must be observed; document review can be remote.
ISO 22000 in Belgium: questions clients ask
Is ISO 22000 the same as the FASFC's self-checking system?
No. The FASFC's self-checking system is a legal duty based on HACCP principles, with voluntary validation against an approved sector guide. ISO 22000 is a voluntary international management-system standard that adds management commitment, communication and continual improvement. A strong self-checking system helps, but each has its own audit.
Does ISO 22000 certification earn FASFC benefits?
The FASFC links its reduced annual contribution and lower inspection frequency to validation of the self-checking system, not to ISO 22000. If that benefit matters to you, ask the agency whether an ISO certificate gives any recognition for your activity. Do not assume it does until the FASFC confirms in writing.
Which accreditation should an ISO 22000 certification body hold?
Choose a body whose accreditation comes from BELAC or an equivalent national body and whose written scope covers the food safety category of your products. Belgium's national accreditation system dates from a Royal Decree of 31 January 2006, and accreditation is granted scope by scope. Ask for the scope document before you appoint anyone.
Should we choose ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000?
Let your customers decide. Some buyers accept ISO 22000, while others name FSSC 22000, which builds on it with additional scheme requirements. Ask your main customers which they require, then plan one system that can be audited to the stricter option if needed. Sterling builds the system either way.
