FSSC 22000 certification in Belgium at a glance
In Belgium, FSSC 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Food businesses in Belgium already work inside a legal frame: the FASFC makes a self-checking system mandatory, built on HACCP principles under the Royal Decree of 14 November 2003. FSSC 22000 goes beyond it, which is why retailers and multinational buyers often ask for it. It layers a food safety management system, prerequisite programmes and food defence on top of what the agency requires, and the certificate comes from a body authorised under the scheme and accredited, ideally by BELAC. For manufacturers in Flanders, cold-chain handlers at Brucargo and exporters, the certificate answers a buyer's approval question that the FASFC's own system does not. Sterling, from its Enschede office, closes the gaps between the legal self-checking system and the scheme.
Who needs FSSC 22000 in Belgium, and what happens without it
In Belgium the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Food and packaging manufacturers supplying retailers and multinationalsCustomers often name a recognised food safety scheme in supplier approval.
- Operators already running a FASFC self-checking systemThe mandatory HACCP-based self-checking system gives a base for a scheme audit.
- Cold-chain and perishables handlers at BrucargoPerishables flows put traceability and hygiene under customer scrutiny.
- Agri-food companies exporting from FlandersExport buyers ask for scheme certificates that travel across markets.

Strip away the vocabulary and FSSC 22000 asks a company to prove six things about food safety to the level global buyers expect.
In Belgium these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: FSSC 22000 explained →

How long does FSSC 22000 certification take in Belgium?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Belgium these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of sites and product categories
- Maturity of HACCP, prerequisite programmes and food defence
- Allergen and traceability controls
- Certification body scheduling around the summer holiday period
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does FSSC 22000 certification cost in Belgium?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Belgium these factors move both.
- Sites, lines and headcount in scope
- Remediation of prerequisite programmes
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Integration with ISO 22000 and ISO 9001
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
FSSC 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Belgium
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers FSSC 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Belgium are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Belgium
Use a certification body that is authorised under the scheme owner's rules for FSSC 22000 and accredited by BELAC or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Confirm both the scheme authorisation and the accreditation scope before you apply. No body is named here unless its scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: FSSC 22000 hub →
Audit language
Dutch, French and German are the official languages and English is common in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.
Remote and on-site
Audits are on-site because production areas and hygiene controls must be observed; document review can be remote.
FSSC 22000 in Belgium: questions clients ask
Is FSSC 22000 required in Belgium?
No scheme certificate is required by law. What the FASFC makes mandatory is a self-checking system, which for food safety must be based on HACCP principles. FSSC 22000 is a voluntary scheme that customers may ask for in addition. Check each customer's supplier requirements and, for legal duties, the FASFC's guidance.
Does a validated FASFC self-checking system replace FSSC 22000?
No. Validation of the self-checking system by an accredited independent certification body is voluntary and relates to the FASFC's own system, with benefits such as a reduced annual contribution and a lower inspection frequency. A retailer that asks for FSSC 22000 is asking for a different scheme, so the two are not interchangeable.
Which accreditation should an FSSC 22000 certification body hold?
Accreditation by BELAC, the Belgian national accreditation body created by Royal Decree of 31 January 2006, or by an equivalent body, together with authorisation under the scheme owner's rules. Accreditation is scope-specific, so ask for the written scope and check it covers food manufacturing categories relevant to you.
Can we prepare for FSSC 22000 while running a HACCP-based self-checking system?
Yes, and it is a sensible start. Your self-checking system already rests on HACCP principles, so hazard analysis and records exist. Gaps usually appear in prerequisite programmes, food defence, management commitment and internal audit. Sterling fills those gaps before a certification body audits the system against the scheme.
