ISO 22000 certification in Bangladesh at a glance
In Bangladesh, ISO 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Food safety law in Bangladesh runs through the Safe Food Act, 2013, which regulates production, import, processing, storage and sale of food and gives the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority the power to license and inspect establishments. The Act does not name ISO 22000, so the certificate is a commercial choice made by processors, exporters and suppliers whose buyers want a recognised food safety management system. It is separate from the BSTI certification mark, which relates to products under Bangladesh Standards. Certificates come from certification bodies accredited for food safety management systems, so read the scope before you pay for an audit. Sterling's Mumbai office helps clients build hazard analysis, prerequisite programmes, traceability and supplier controls and prepare for the audit, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 22000 in Bangladesh, and what happens without it
In Bangladesh the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Food and beverage processors and packersThe Safe Food Act, 2013 regulates processing, storage, supply and sale of food, and a food safety management system keeps hazards under control.
- Agro-food exportersImporting buyers ask for food safety certification from suppliers, and accredited certificates are easier to place.
- Packaging, ingredient and cold-chain suppliersFood manufacturers pass requirements down to those who supply or handle materials.
- Catering, hospitality and institutional kitchensLarge kitchens use the standard to organise hazard analysis, prerequisite programmes and traceability.

Take the ISO 22000 readiness checkISO 22000 requirements in Bangladesh
Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22000 requires a company to prove six things about keeping food safe from supplier to customer.
In Bangladesh these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22000 explained →

How long does ISO 22000 certification take in Bangladesh?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Bangladesh these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Products, lines and sites in scope
- State of prerequisite programmes, hazard analysis and traceability
- Laboratory testing and supplier approval records
- Certification body scheduling around seasonal production
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 22000 certification cost in Bangladesh?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Bangladesh these factors move both.
- Number of sites, lines and products in scope
- Hygiene, equipment or layout upgrades found necessary
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Laboratory testing and calibration
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Bangladesh
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Bangladesh are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 22000 in Bangladesh (3)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Safe Food Act, 2013 (Act No. 43 of 2013) | Context Regulates the food chain through the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority; its functions include supporting policy on accreditation of bodies that certify food safety management systems; the Act does not name ISO 22000. |
| Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution Act, 2018 (Act No. 67 of 2018) | Context BSTI implements Bangladesh Standards through a national certification mark scheme or inspection; that scheme is separate from ISO 22000 certification. |
| Bangladesh Accreditation Board | Accreditation ILAC lists BAB as a signatory body; confirm that a certification body's scope covers food safety management systems. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Bangladesh
Choose a certification body whose accreditation covers this standard and your sector: accreditation by the Bangladesh Accreditation Board (BAB) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Ask for the accreditation certificate and read its scope. The Safe Food Act refers to accreditation policy for bodies that certify food safety management systems, so ask the certification body how its accreditation relates to it. Audit language
Buyer standards, export documents and most management system records are in English, and Bangla is the state language under the Constitution; interviews with workers and supervisors are normally in Bangla. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Audits are on-site at production, storage and dispatch areas; some document review can be done remotely.
ISO 22000 in Bangladesh: questions clients ask
Is ISO 22000 required to sell food in Bangladesh?
No. The Safe Food Act, 2013 sets the legal framework, including licensing and inspection of food establishments by the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority, and it does not name ISO 22000. The certificate is voluntary and usually requested by buyers. Confirm licences and registrations for your business with the Authority.
What does the Safe Food Act say about certification bodies?
Among the Authority's functions, the Act says it supports the relevant body in making and carrying out accreditation policy for organisations that certify food safety management systems, and in policy for food laboratory accreditation. It does not say which standard they certify to. Ask the Authority or the accreditation body how that policy applies today.
Does a BSTI certification mark replace ISO 22000?
No. BSTI's national certification mark scheme implements Bangladesh Standards for products, while ISO 22000 certifies a management system, audited by an accredited certification body. A manufacturer may need both for different reasons. Check with BSTI whether a mark is compulsory for your product, and with your buyer which system certificate it wants.
What should I look for in a food safety certification body?
Accreditation, from the Bangladesh Accreditation Board or a body within the international recognition arrangements, that covers food safety management systems and your food category. Ask for the accreditation certificate and read its scope. Buyers abroad often name acceptable schemes, so check their list before you commission an audit.
