HACCP certification in Bangladesh at a glance
In Bangladesh, HACCP is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
HACCP is the part of food safety that a Bangladeshi processor can start tomorrow: list the process steps, find the hazards, set critical limits and monitor them. The Safe Food Act, 2013 gives the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority powers to license and inspect food businesses and does not name HACCP, so a certificate is a buyer, retailer or export matter. Smaller producers of seafood, dairy, bakery and snacks, and operators of large kitchens, use it to show control without the weight of a full management system, while others treat it as the first step towards ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000. Ask your customer which scheme it accepts and check the accreditation scope of the certification body. Sterling's Mumbai office helps clients draw the flow, run the hazard analysis and build monitoring records, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement.
Who needs HACCP in Bangladesh, and what happens without it
In Bangladesh the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Small and mid-sized food processorsThe Safe Food Act regulates food production and sale, and a HACCP plan is the practical way to control hazards in the process.
- Seafood, dairy, bakery and snack producers selling to modern retailRetail and export buyers ask for a documented hazard analysis and critical control points.
- Catering and food-service operatorsKitchens that serve at scale use HACCP to manage temperature, cross-contamination and allergens.
- Suppliers building towards ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000HACCP principles form the core of those systems and give a stepping stone.

Take the HACCP readiness checkHACCP requirements in Bangladesh
Strip away the vocabulary and HACCP asks a food business to prove six things about how it controls food safety hazards.
In Bangladesh these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: HACCP explained →

How long does HACCP certification take in Bangladesh?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Bangladesh these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of products, process flows and sites
- Maturity of prerequisite programmes and monitoring records
- Hazard analysis, critical limits and verification evidence
- Certification body scheduling and buyer deadlines
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does HACCP certification cost in Bangladesh?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Bangladesh these factors move both.
- Number of sites and product lines
- Hygiene and equipment upgrades
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Laboratory and calibration needs
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
HACCP consultants and certification bodies in Bangladesh
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers HACCP and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Bangladesh are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|

| Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution Act, 2018 (Act No. 67 of 2018) | Context BSTI implements Bangladesh Standards and runs a national certification mark scheme; it does not make HACCP certification a statutory duty. |
| Bangladesh Accreditation Board | Accreditation The national accreditation body; confirm whether a certification body's accreditation covers the HACCP scheme you need. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Bangladesh
HACCP certification depends on the scheme a buyer accepts: some buyers want an audit against HACCP principles, others prefer a full food safety management system certificate. Ask your buyer first, then ask each candidate certification body for its accreditation certificate and scope and read the food categories it covers. Edition and transition details: HACCP hub →
Audit language
Buyer standards, export documents and most management system records are in English, and Bangla is the state language under the Constitution; interviews with workers and supervisors are normally in Bangla. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Audits are on-site at the production line and storage areas; document review can be partly remote.
HACCP in Bangladesh: questions clients ask
Does Bangladesh law require a HACCP certificate?
The Safe Food Act, 2013 does not name HACCP in its provisions. It regulates licensing, inspection and the food chain, and a certificate is generally a buyer or export requirement. Ask your customer what it needs, and confirm licensing duties for your premises with the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority or counsel.
Is HACCP the same as ISO 22000?
No. HACCP is a hazard-control method with seven principles, while ISO 22000 is a management system standard that includes HACCP alongside policy, planning, resources and improvement. Many processors begin with HACCP and grow into ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000 when buyers ask for more. Check what each customer accepts.
Can a small processor implement HACCP without a large budget?
Yes, because cost follows scope: the number of sites and product lines, hygiene or equipment fixes, laboratory testing and the certification body's own fees. A single-line plant with sound prerequisites needs less than a multi-site operation. Define a tight scope and ask the body for a quotation against it.
Which product tests support a HACCP system?
Verification usually includes testing finished product, raw materials and the environment against the limits in the plan. BSTI tests and calibrates and approves laboratories under its Act, and accredited laboratories add confidence. Choose a laboratory whose scope covers your product and ask the certification body how it treats results.
